Institute is the nest of hate, racism and cruelty and they have to accomplish their mission of developing the Complete Man without flaws, so it's vitally important to have somebody who will represent comfort, loyalty and security. Conroy said the school was a composite of several schools, but it strikingly resembles the Citadel in Charleston, SC where the story takes place. As our company evolved, we began our eBay business, which brings thousands of fresh auctions per week to the world's largest online auction marketplace. But to me, Charleston is a dark city, a melancholy city, whose severe covenants and secrets are as powerful and beguiling as its elegance, whose demons dance their alley dances and compose their malign hymns to the side of the moon I cannot see There aren't many authors who can do that so eloquently, tying in real world issues with a fictional world full of characters who are well developed and a plot line that makes me want to keep reading until I get to the end. The restaurant scene with Bobby Bentley, Commerce's home, and the train track scene were filmed in Charleston, South Carolina , over a period of two weeks. I would leave him with no regrets except that I had not stopped to honor his passing. In a way he's a full circle person. What's more, I'm even more dismissive of most fiction than I was then. To add even more spice to this essay: it's a goddamn military book! This powerful and breathtaking novel is the story of four cadets who have become bloodbrothers. It was like arriving at a place much safer than home. There is so much more to this book than my words could describe. These young men were put through rigorous and demeaning torture that was definitely the actions of ruthless young men that had a history of violence or abuse in their younger lives. As Will receives his diploma from the Institute, he is coldly told by General Durrell not to disgrace the ring, to which Will simply replies with "Dante Pignetti". All things Citadel Post anything of interest, not sports related, that you think would interest the membership. However, Will does have some pride in the Institute, representing it in basketball. Every once in a while I found Conroy's prose to be flowery to no real purpose, but it doesn't detract that much from the novel, and at times it was breathtakingly beautiful. Like all of us, it is Will's interior life that is the most honest and interesting, and it is his moments of introspection where the novel really achieves greatness. Will does not take naturally to military training, and is further isolated by his background. The novel propelled me along to its conclusion. Not only have the Ten been operating for years, but Durrell supports their activities. The casual use of profanity as a means of degrading people shows how Pat Conroy does anything but sugarcoat the realities of the military academy. Unfortunately, hazing and Hell Night aren't the worst thing about the school. Clear your history. As with all Conroy books there are many plot lines in the story. The Citadel began in the early part of the 19th Century as an institute to train young men of South Carolina to preserve the system of the slave-owning class. Developing your thesis 1. Your first task in writing an essay of opinion is to raise a question that is open to debate and significant enough for your reader to want to know your answer. 2. Think hard and carefully about the novels you have read to find an idea they have in common and then formulate an opinion on that idea which you can develop into a research paper. 3. Choose an issue that can be argued by way of examples from the novels you have read. 4. Even after you have selected your thesis, let your opinion continue to take shape in the process of gathering and organizing your material. Ideally, an opinion is the result of the process of investigation. Rather than find facts to fit a preconceived opinion, develop an opinion to fit the facts you have found. 5. Be prepared to change your mind in the light of new evidence. The following are introductory paragraphs written by Great Valley students who have written successful research papers in the past. Read each paragraph and underline what you think is the thesis statement. 1. Willa Cather is an author who demonstrates an appreciation for an individual’s ability to withstand difficult circumstances and depicts these characters in her books as heroes. Characters such as the immigrant Alexandra in O Pioneers! And Antonia in My Antonia face many challenges: the death of family members, taming the wild land, and facing a new and unknown world. These characters endure these hardships due to an inner strength that emerges from their relationship with the land.

ONE THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FACTS ABOUT THE CLASS OF 1970 (“THE KNOBS OF DISCIPLINE”) TERRY KNEEN F COMPANY, 1970 A NOTE TO THE CITADEL CLASS OF 1970 Over the last several years I have been asking classmates to give me inputs about our four years at The Citadel. In the last several months I have been asking “what did you do after we left The Citadel”. I have put all of this information into the following document. It was my original intention to make “hard copies” of this and to have that included in the Fiftieth Reunion Welcome Packet. COVID 19 has changed that plan. I’m not so sure that we will even have a Fiftieth Reunion this year. Unless things change drastically, I cannot imagine school Admin allowing or wanting a bunch of 70 year old alumni on campus during these times. While things may change and we may still have the reunion, I think it is best that I go ahead and put my “Senior Essay” on the Class of 1970 website. The title of this document is, “ONE THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FACTS ABOUT THE CLASS OF 1970”. It is divided into NINE parts: Preface (page 3) The Statistical Facts (pages 4 thru 7) Knob Year Facts (pages 8 thru 18) Sophomore Year Facts (pages 19 thru 23) Junior Year Facts (pages 24 thru 27) Senior Year Facts (pages 28 thru 32) The Citadel Ring (page 33) Whatever Happened to the Class of 1970 (pages 34 thru 39) Notes/Bibliography/Sources/Acknowledgements (pages 40 thru 41) I hope you will enjoy reading about our class and your classmates.

Pro lo g u e wear the ring. III wear the ring and I return often to the city of Charleston, South Carolina, to study the history of my becoming a man. My approach to Charleston is always silent and distracted, but I come under full sail, with hissing silk and memories a-wing above me in the shapes of the birds I love best: old brown pelicans, Great Blue herons, cowbirds, falcons lost at sea, ospreys lean from dives, and eagles over schools of mullet. I am a lowcountry boy. My entrance to this marsh-haunted city is always filled with troubled meditations on both my education and my solitude during a four-year residence at the Institute. The city of Charleston, in the green feathery modesty of its palms, in the certitude of its style, in the economy and stringency of its lines, and the serenity of its mansions South of Broad Street, is a feast for the human eye. But to me, Charleston is a dark city, a melancholy city, whose severe covenants and secrets are as powerful and beguiling as its elegance, whose demons dance their alley dances and compose their malign hymns to the side of the moon I cannot see. I studied those demons closely once, and they helped kill off the boy in me. I am not a son of Charleston. Nor could I be if I wanted to. I am always a visitor, and my allegiance lies with other visitors, sons and daughters of accident and circumstance. Edgar Allan Poe was a son by visitation.

  • Pat Conroy, from My Losing Season
Pat Conroy, from My Losing Season Pat Conroy was the eldest of seven children in a military family and the victim of his father’s violence and abuse from a young age. He used his experiences as a young man growing up, moving constantly and navigating the rigid rules of the military as well as the segregated South under Jim Crow in such novels as The Water is Wide, The Great Santini, and The Lords of Discipline, a fictional account of his years at The Citadel Military College in South Carolina. The Prince of Tides remains Conroy’s most celebrated work, and each of these novels has been made into a successful motion picture. In his 2002 memoir My Losing Season, Conroy recounts his experiences as a student and a basketball player on a mediocre college team during the turbulent 1960s. In this passage, Conroy describes his August 1963 journey from Omaha, Nebraska, where his father had just been transferred, back to South Carolina where he had graduated high school in June and where he would begin his “plebe”—or freshman—year at The Citadel. CHAPTER 7: PLEBE YEAR I entered The Citadel as a walk-on, a player who makes the team without the benefit of scholarship. My first year, Mel [Thompson, coach of The Citadel] hadn't offered me a scholarship because, as he told my father, “I signed two guards a lot better than Pat,” and he was telling the truth. “Walk-on”— this still remains the proudest word I can apply to myself. Walk-on— there are resolve and backbone in that noun.

Using the method of currere as a lead theory. The four-step process – regressive, progressive, analytical, synthetic – helped me work towards understanding the parts of myself affected by these traumas. Investigation of my own family’s generations of abuse as well as reflecting on these experiences helped me deconstruct my own story as I search for my own meaning and purpose. This study utilized aesthetics, depth psychology, and place as central themes in this work. I learned the valued of active imagination and the role it plays in psychic healing.

  • The Citadel and Post World War Ii America
MARCHING IN STEP: THE CITADEL AND POST WORLD WAR II AMERICA by ALEXANDER STEPHENS MACAULAY, JR (Under the Direction of James C. Cobb) ABSTRACT In 1941, W.J. Cash predicted correctly that “in the coming days and probably soon, [the South] is likely to have to prove its capacity for adjustment far beyond what has been true in the past.” From 1945 to 1995, The Citadel found its “capacity for adjustment” sorely tested, and the school’s attempts to define, defend, and adapt its identity to a nation and region undergoing significant cultural, political, and social change is the subject of my dissertation. Perceived and vigorously marketed as a profoundly southern institution, The Citadel’s post World War II experience speaks to issues of southern distinctiveness and should shed light on the South’s real and imagined relationship with the rest of America. Certain authors have depicted the “Southernization of America” as a relatively recent phenomenon, and for much of its history, the South has been viewed as an island within the United States; a region operating outside the ebb and flow of the American mainstream. In the decades following World War II Citadel personnel bolstered their defense of the school’s value with conveniently selected interpretations of the past and with carefully tailored definitions of citizenship. More often than not, however, these attitudes have reflected rather than stood apart from the political and cultural values of mainstream American society, and tracking The Citadel’s appeal as an American, and not just a southern, institution may well lead one to wonder if the rest of the nation needed “Southernizing” and convince some people to acknowledge the undistilled Americanism of The Citadel.
