Twelve is much more versatile, having four even divisors—2, 3, 4, and 6—as opposed to only two for ten. This means that such hatefulness as “0.333. ” for 1/3 and “0.1666. ” for 1/6 are things of the past, replaced by easy “0;4” (four twelfths) and “0;2” (two twelfths). In dozenal, counting goes “one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, elv, dozen; dozen one, dozen two, dozen three, dozen four, dozen five, dozen six, dozen seven, dozen eight, dozen nine, dozen ten, dozen elv, two dozen, two dozen one. ” It’s written as such: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, X, E, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 1X, 1E, 20, 21... Dozenal counting is at once much more efficient and much easier than decimal counting, and takes only a little bit of time to get used to. Finn Institute of Economic Affairs This article examines the use of sources in an essay by Daniel Finn. Booth claims that Finn’s citations of Booth’s own work (as well as that of others) fail to respon- sibly and properly account for the original context of those references as well as their clear implications. After outlining the differences between libertarianism and neoconservatism, as well as between Catholic social thought and Catholic social teaching, Booth proceeds to examine three specific citations attributed to him by Finn. Booth concludes by looking at Finn’s characterization of positions attributed to Robert Sirico and Rodger Charles, as well as with a statement about the pos- sible contributions to Catholic social thought to be gained from public choice and Austrian economics. In a contribution to a controversy in the Journal of Markets & Morality, Daniel Finn discussed what he described as “Nine Libertarian Heresies Tempting Neoconservatives to Stray from Catholic Social Thought.”1 This is an inauspi- cious title for an article in an academic journal. To begin with, it is not obvious why libertarian heresies would tempt neoconservatives. Neoconservatives are not libertarian, and they tend to believe in using the state to achieve neocon- servative aims. This is one reason why George W. Bush ranks with Presidents Roosevelt and Johnson as one of the three presidents who expanded the scope of the state most rapidly. -

Hamburger* In 1702, in an opinion touching upon parliamentary power, Chief Justice Sir John Holt discussed limitations on government in language that has long seemed more intriguing than clear. Undoubtedly, the Chief Justice was suggesting limitations on government-limitations that subsequently have become quite prominent, particularly in America. Yet even the best report of his opinion concerning these constraints has left historians in some doubt as to just what he was saying and why it was significant.' The case in which ChiefJustice Holt was so obscure about matters of such importance, City of London v. Wood,2 revived the old maxim that a person could not be judge in his own case. -

The Rearguard of Freedom: The John Birch Society and the Development of Modern Conservatism in the United States, 1958-1968 by Bart Verhoeven, MA (English, American Studies), BA (English and Italian Languages) Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts July 2015 Abstract This thesis aims to investigate the role of the anti-communist John Birch Society within the greater American conservative field. More specifically, it focuses on the period from the Society's inception in 1958 to the beginning of its relative decline in significance, which can be situated after the first election of Richard M. Nixon as president in 1968. The main focus of the thesis lies on challenging more traditional classifications of the JBS as an extremist outcast divorced from the American political mainstream, and argues that through their innovative organizational methods, national presence, and capacity to link up a variety of domestic and international affairs to an overarching conspiratorial narrative, the Birchers were able to tap into a new and powerful force of largely white suburban conservatives and contribute significantly to the growth and development of the post-war New Right. For this purpose, the research interrogates the established scholarship and draws upon key primary source material, including official publications, internal communications and the private correspondence of founder and chairman Robert Welch as well as other prominent members. Acknowledgments The process of writing a PhD dissertation seems none too dissimilar from a loving marriage. It is a continuous and emotionally taxing struggle that leaves the individual's ego in constant peril, subjugates mind and soul to an incessant interplay between intense passion and grinding routine, and in most cases should not drag on for over four years. -

Reviewed by Andrew Foshee, McNeese State University. his book is an essential read for those of us with vocations as economists and faith lives as Christians, and most especially for economists such as T me who are Roman Catholics. Thomas Woods argues that there is a strong “hostility toward the market” in the social encyclicals, notwithstanding the favorable comments made by John Paul II in Centesimus Annus. This hostility has led Catholic supporters of the market to endorse compromised positions on a variety of issues including labor unions, wage rates, and monopoly. Interventionism is accepted in principle, the issue being only one of degree. Woods, on the other hand, is writing a principled defense of the free market which directs its response toward Catholics on the “right” who mistrust the market because they believe that Church teaching requires it (pp. 1–2). Woods says …a great many Catholics with backgrounds in economics have been concerned that the means recommended by the popes may not have the results intended for them, and were even likely to make the condition of workers and poor still worse. Meanwhile, though, the impression has been given that to voice these misgivings is to involve oneself in some kind of disobedience to Church teaching. It is this unresolved difficulty that this book aims to address in the course of its defense of the market (p. 3). -

ABSTRACT Catholic Libertarianism? Garrett McMillan Director: Timothy W. Burns, Ph. D. What are the similarities and difference between Catholic political thought and Libertarian political thought? What are the chief principles of libertarianism, and is it a self-sufficient political philosophy? What are the chief principles of Catholic political thought, and does it have anything to learn from libertarianism? To what extent, and in what ways, can the political thought of these two traditions be considered compatible, and to what extent and in what ways do they conflict with each other? This thesis will first examine the origins of libertarian thought, the concept of natural rights, and the goal of economic prosperity among the liberal political philosophers of the 17th century, alongside more contemporary libertarian thinkers. It will then examine an interpretation of the political thought of St. Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas, alongside a comparison of the doctrine of natural rights and the doctrine of natural law. Finally, this paper will examine two justifications of liberalism by contemporary Catholic authors, the first through a thorough analysis of the social encyclicals, and the second through a joint examination of Catholic principles and economic analysis. Communal Property: A Libertarian Analysis By Kevin Carson Center for a Stateless Society Paper No. 13 (Summer/Fall 2011) INTRODUCTION The dominant market anarchist view of property takes for granted individual, fee-simple ownership through individual appropriation as the only natural form of property. Although common or collective ownership is grudgingly accepted as a legitimate—if inefficient—form of “voluntary socialism,” it's taken for granted that such forms of ownership can only come about through some sort of special contract between preexisting owners of fee-simple individual property. Land can only be appropriated, runs the usually tacit assumption, by individuals. Right-wing libertarian and Objectivist forums are full of statements that “there's no such thing as collective property,” “all property rights are individual,” and the like. Ayn Rand argued that it was impossible for European settlers to steal the land of American Indians, because the latter had no valid property rights: Now, I don't care to discuss the alleged complaints American Indians have against this country. I believe, with good reason, the most unsympathetic Hollywood portrayal of Indians and what they did to the white man. They had no right to a country merely because they were born here and then acted like savages. The white man did not conquer this country. And you're a racist if you object, because it means you believe that certain men are entitled to something because of their race. You believe that if someone is born in a magnificent country and doesn't know what to do with it, he still has a property right to it.
