Violence against an individual on the basis of his /her gender is common place and is becoming endemic. Various studies have been carried out on what fosters gender violence and what makes it thrive with a view to putting an end to the problem. This has opened up various arguments as to how the problem can best be tackled. This study looks at the analyses of gender violence in the Nigerian novel and how Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie presents this problem in her novels; Purple Hibiscus (2003) and Half of a Yellow Sun (2006).This research interrogates how Adichie presents gender violence in these novels and how it affects the female gender. This study demonstrates that the texts selected by its thematic preoccupation and character delineation show culture and tradition as strong factors in sex differentiation, creation of gender identities and power sharing. It also shows that socially constructed roles and identities contribute to domestic and social violence in patriarchal societies. The study examines the themes, metaphors and symbolic representation of characters through the feminist perspective and Max Weber‘s power theory. This is because the analyses of gender relations must take into cognizance theories of a person‘s biological sex and gender identity and how it affects power sharing and the role of tradition, laws and the dominant ideology in the perpetuation of gender-based violence. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to women writing in Africa. Consequently, gender studies dominated the literary scene and the representation of women in male authored works precipitated many critical debates. In other words, there has been more interest in examining the ways in which men behave, particularly in relation to women. Consequently, a literary canon was developed in which women writers give a re-presentation of the female experience by depicting a different image of women in their works in variance wih the earlier works by male authors. In furtherance of the argument on the importance of women writing about the female experience in literary texts, Aidoo (1996) submits that, ―Women writers write about women because when we wake up in the

    Out of the Silence: Igbo Women Writers and Contemporary Nigeria Shalini Nadaswaran School of the Arts and Media, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences University of New South Wales NSW, Australia A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the degree Doctor of Philosophy. February 13th, 2013. Abstract Despite the substantive research on individual Nigerian Igbo women writers, little is known on the growth and transition of their writing from the first generation of writers to the present contemporary third-generation. The overall image that emerges from the literature is that Nigerian Igbo women’s works redress stereotypical images of female characters in male writings. This thesis analyses the changing woman subject in family and the nation in the works of eight Nigerian Igbo women, from first generation Flora Nwapa, second generation Buchi Emecheta and Ifeoma Okoye, and third generation Akachi Ezeigbo, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Unoma Azuah, Chika Unigwe and Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani. An analysis of selected novels reveals the female subject in each generation changing within the family and nation to be more pronounced and strong-willed than in the writings of the generation before. Female characters are no longer depicted in archetypal images of victims but rather portrayed playing active roles within their family and nation. Womanist theory is applied to expound the female characters’ quests for self-determination and agency within these spheres. In the domestic realm of the family a distinct progression can be detected in the concerns and themes of the novels; but in the representation of nationalism in the Biafran War, the corruption and criminality that followed the war, and the spread of sex trafficking, the three generations are in strong agreement.

    African Studies Quarterly | Volume 20, Issue 2| May 2021 Canons and Margins: Contemporary Nigerian Writing, Father-Surveillance Criticism and Kindred Economies of Othering YOMI OLUSEGUN-JOSEPH Abstract: Prominent within debates focusing on the imaginative site of contemporary Nigerian writing is an impasse that derives from locating this new literary trend within canonical identification. In a number of cases, the contemporary Nigerian writer is treated as relatively inferior to writers of older generations, despite their novel and revisionist statements on ethnicity, nation, nationalism, gender, place, home, exile, and postcolony. On the one hand, this paper contests this questionable critical persuasion as biased and symptomatic of an essentialist mode of reading it refers to as “father- surveillance criticism.” On the other hand, it interrogates certain new institutional and ideological practices that tend to bifurcate contemporary Nigerian writing along categories that privilege the migrant version at the expense of the home-grown stock. Thus, the paper reads contemporary Nigerian writing as a revolutionary site of several imaginative, thematic, and discursive possibilities which problematizes familiar orientations of canonizing and therefore compels a democratizing and reviewing of the idea of the Nigerian literary canon.
