Windows 10 hints

To split the screen so you can have multiple windows open at the same time • Window & Arrows • Or drag a window to an upper corner to snap it 1/4 lower corner to snap it ½

To see all your open windows in • Click on Task View icon in • Or Window & Tab • Task view also lets you see what programs you used in the past using the scroller • Task view also lets you make virtual desktops o Can also create a second desktop with Windows & Ctrl & D o To delete virtual desktops Window & Ctrl & F o To switch between desktops Window & Ctrl & Left or Right Arrow

To create folders on your desktop • Right click>New>Folder

To turn on the magnifier • Window & + • Repeat Window & + to increase magnification • Window & - to decrease magnification • Ctrl & Alt & M to scroll through different magnifier o Ctrl & Alt & Arrow keys to resize the magnifier lens • Window & Esc = turn off magnifier

Set up Start Window • Pin an app/program to the Start window right click and choose Pin to Start • Can resize the tile for the app by right clicking on it and choosing Resize and the size you like • Create a folder for tiles by dragging one on top of another o Click on the folder to open it o Drag tiles to a new position to remove them from a folder

Taskbar • Pin a program to the taskbar by right clicking and choosing More>Pin to Taskbar • Unpin from taskbar by right clicking on taskbar icon and Unpin from Taskbar

Desktop Shortcut • Create a desktop shortcut for a program by dragging the program or tile to the desktop o Shortcuts are indicated by a small blue arrow in the lower left corner o Deleting a shortcut will not delete a program of file • Create a desktop shortcut for a file by right clicking on the file and choosing Create Shortcut then drag the shortcut to the desktop

Select a section of a screen and save it to your clipboard to highlight and save • Window & Shift & S • Or find in Quick Actions Settings You May Wish to Change

To access click on Window>Gear

• System o Display ▪ Change the size of text, apps, and other items • If you change size you may want to click on Advanced and turn on fix apps ▪ Night light changes the display color after sunset to help you fall asleep better • Click on Night light settings to set times, colors o Notifications & Actions ▪ Notifications pop up in the lower corner • Can turn them off for general things and for individual apps ▪ Actions provide access to thing you may want to turn on quickly

• Actions are in the word bubble on the lower right • To access actions on a tablet swipe from the right edge of the screen o Focus assist lets you turn off notifications from apps and contacts o Multitasking ▪ Go here if drag snapping isn’t working and check settings o Clipboard ▪ Turn on Clipboard history to save more than one clip • Window + V will show the clipboard history • Pin a clip to save it if it is something you use often • Personalization o Background lets you change the look of your desktop o Colors sets your accent colors (what start window will look like) o Lock Screen how your lock screen looks when you are not logged in or time out o Themes has preset background and color schemes o Start lets you set what you see in start and how you see start o Taskbar lets you set how your taskbar looks ▪ Have a lot in taskbar? Use small taskbar buttons ▪ Use Peek to preview desktop will show the desktop when you bring mouse to the bottom right hand corner otherwise you have to click there to go to desktop and back ▪ Taskbar location can move taskbar to the side or top ▪ Combine taskbar buttons lets you have labels on or off • Apps o Default apps is where you can choose what programs automatically open what types of files o Startup lets you choose what apps auto start when you turn on your computer • Mouse o Make your mouse right or left handed by choosing your primary button o Set how fast your mouse wheel scrolls • Privacy o Location can turn off permission for apps to determine your location o Camera can block apps from accessing your camera, but not windows o Background Apps runs apps when you aren’t using them so they can notify you, update etc. will drain batteries

Settings that help those with special needs

• Display o Make text bigger o Make everything bigger o Show notifications can be extended if you don’t have time to read them o Auto hide scroll bars • Cursor & pointer Size o Makes cursor and pointer easier to see by changing size and color • Magnifier o Set defaults for the magnifier ▪ Zoom level ▪ Lens size ▪ Autostart at sign-in o Docked puts the magnified area at the top of the screen • Color filters o If you are colorblind will filter colors to assist • High Contrast o For some other vision problems may make screen easier to read • Narrator o reads what is on the screen o Window & CTRL & Enter turns narrator on and off o Narrator can read what you are typing as you type • Audio o Turn on mono audio to combine the left and right channels good for hearing issues o Turn on visual alerts • Speech o Window & H to turn on dictation • Sticky Keys o Press shift key 5 times to turn on o Let’s you do keyboard shortcuts by pressing one key at a time • Filter Keys o Hold right shift key for 8 seconds to turn on o Won’t let you accidentally type multiple letters • Mouse o Mouse Keys lets you control the mouse with the number pad on the keyboard o 5 is your clicker
