La laguna de Parinacochas, situada en el extremo sur del departamento de Ayacucho, a 3200 m de altitud, Email José Roque: está considerada como un importante humedal altoandino; sin embargo, su riqueza florística es poco cono- [email protected] cida. En un intento por cubrir este vacío de información botánica, se presentan los resultados de evaluaciones 2 Dirección de Conservación de la Biodiversidad, Instituto Nacional de realizadas entre los años 2003—2006 en este ecosistema altoandino. Se encontraron siete tipos de vegetación, constituyendo [email protected] los matorrales los más diversos. Veinte taxones, incluyendo cinco subespecies, son considerados endémicos para el país; se amplía, igualmente, el conocimiento sobre la distribución departamental de 93 taxones. La actividad ganadera constituye la principal amenaza antrópica, en tanto que otras actividades no representan riesgo potencial para la flora y vegetación de este ecosistema. Abstract Parinacochas lake, located in the southernmost part of the department of Ayacucho, to 3200 m of altitude, is http://sisbib.unmsm.edu.pe/BVRevistas/biologia/biologiaNEW.htm considered as an important high-Andean wetland; however, its floristic richness is little known. As an attempt to cover this empty of botanical information, results of evaluations made between years 2003 and 2006 in this high-Andean ecosystem are presented. The vascular flora is represented by 234 taxa (225 species and nine infraspecific taxa), in 179 genera and 73 families; Asteraceae, Poaceae and Fabaceae are families with the Presentado: 09/07/2007 largest number of species. Moments later, Alberto showed me an obscure text that he had come across, about the neighboring town of Quispillaccta. I leafed through the pages and began reciting a passage about a bloody battle that erupted between the peasants of Chuschi and Quispillaccta in 1960.     Languages of the Middle Andes in areal-typological perspective: Emphasis on Quechuan and Aymaran Willem F.H. Adelaar 1. Introduction1 Among the indigenous languages of the Andean region of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina, Quechuan and Aymaran have traditionally occupied a dominant position. Both Quechuan and Aymaran are language families of several million speakers each. Quechuan consists of a conglomerate of geo- graphically defined varieties, traditionally referred to as Quechua “dialects”, not- withstanding the fact that mutual intelligibility is often lacking. Present-day Ayma- ran consists of two distinct languages that are not normally referred to as “dialects”. The absence of a demonstrable genetic relationship between the Quechuan and Aymaran language families, accompanied by a lack of recognizable external gen- etic connections, suggests a long period of independent development, which may hark back to a period of incipient subsistence agriculture roughly dated between 8000 and 5000 BP (Torero 2002: 123–124), long before the Andean civilization at- tained its highest stages of complexity. Quechuan and Aymaran feature a great amount of detailed structural, phono- logical and lexical similarities and thus exemplify one of the most intriguing and intense cases of language contact to be found in the entire world. Often treated as a product of long-term convergence, the similarities between the Quechuan and Ay- maran families can best be understood as the result of an intense period of social and cultural intertwinement, which must have pre-dated the stage of the proto-lan- guages and was in turn followed by a protracted process of incidental and locally confined diffusion.

    Vol. 11, No. 3, Spring 2014, 1-40 Competing Visions of the 1986 Lima Prison Massacres: Memory and the Politics of War in Peru Tamara Feinstein Carleton College In the bleak, grey winter of June 1986, the streets of Lima teamed with international dignitaries. Journalists, politicians and foreign heads of state filled the local hotels and restaurants, in eager anticipation of the Socialist International. All eyes rested on a freshly minted Alan García, one year into his first presidency. García was a rising star within the APRA (American Popular Revolutionary Alliance) party, one of the strongest and longest standing parties in Peru. Despite APRA’s age, numerical strength and populist appeal, García’s election in 1985 represented APRA’s first presidential win. Promising a return to APRA’s center-left roots, García saw the hosting of the Socialist International as a platform to announce his own brand of social democratic policies. Alienation is often understood as a modern phenomenon, the byproduct of exploitation under industrial labor or the crisis of the individual in the face of the strictures of modern society. Colonial actors, however, sensed, internalized, and expressed an understanding of and frustration with their material marginalization in the face of an ever-intensifying colonial economy that rewarded the landowning benefactor class at the expense of the diverse residents of the colonial world. Focusing on the literature, visual culture, and hagiography of mid-colonial Peru, these alienations appear and reappear in varying discourses of isolation, marginalization, and outsideness (enajenación in early modern Spanish) extending to indigenous, Spanish, and Afroperuvian subjects.

I investigate a historical ethnography of the Peruvian scissors dance, an acrobatic indigenous ritual dance historically associated with the stigma of indigeneity, poverty, and devil worship. After the interventions of Peruvian public intellectual José María Arguedas (1911-1969), the scissors dance became an emblem of indigenous Andean identity and valued as cultural patrimony of the nation. Once repudiated by dominant elites because it embodied the survival of indigenous spiritual practices, the scissors dance is now a celebrated emblem of Peru‟s cultural diversity and the perseverance of Andean traditions in the modern world. I examine the complex processes whereby anthropologists, cultural entrepreneurs, cosmopolitan artists, and indigenous performers themselves have staged the scissors dance as a symbolic resource in the construction of the emergent imaginary of a “New Peru.” I use the term “New Peru” to designate a flexible repertoire of utopian images and discourses designed to imagine the belated overcoming of colonial structures of power and the formation of a modern nation with foundations in the Pre-Columbian past.

Hutch. comprises only the genus Adesmia DC. , with a total of 43 series and approximately 240 species of herbs and shrubs, mainly growing in montane and semi-desert zones. This genus includes two subgenera: Adesmia (unarmed) and Acanthadesmia Burkart (armed). Adesmia in Argentina is represented by 31 series: the subgenus Adesmia with 25 series and the subgenus Acanthadesmia with 6 series. A total of 100 species and 14 varieties are considered for the country, of wich 45 are native and 53 are endemic.
