Die Reise führte uns von Windhoek nach Swakopmund, nach Utusep zu der Schule, an der Dr. Hausburg, Frau Charlotte Herzog und ich im Jahr 2001 die Einweihung des Speisesaales und der beiden Hostels für die die Jungen und Mädchen vornahmen. Wir weihten dort zwei weitere Schulräume ein, die aus Geldern anlässlich meines 70.ten Geburtstages gesammelt wurden. Gebaut haben diese zwei Klassenzimmer Lehrlinge von NIMT (Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology) unter der Leitung von Herrn Ralph Bussel, der heute als 2. Mann bei NIMT arbeitet. Bedankt haben wir uns bei den Lehrlingen und bei Herrn Bussel mit einem Mittagessen in Swakopmund. Das Team hatte hervorragende Arbeit geleistet. Weiteres können Sie aus dem Reisebericht von uns beiden lesen. Es war eine sehr gute Veranstaltung. Weiter fuhren wir nach Otjikondo, wo wir herzlich willkommen geheißen wurden. -

Namibia’s Child Welfare Regime, 1990-2017 Abstract Most countries in Southern Africa are similar in providing some form of cash transfers to families with children, primarily to reduce child poverty, but there are striking variations in the categories of children targeted and the reach of social grants. Namibia adopted South Africa-like child grants during South Africa rule. Namibia’s child welfare regime, like most other regimes in Southern Africa, started with and maintained a strongly familial child welfare regime (CWR), focused on children living in families with only one or no parents present. Whereas South Africa, after its transition to democracy, introduced a Child Support Grant (CSG) - that expanded massively the reach of child grants - Namibia did not do likewise. -

To date, with the exception of studies in India, Kenya, and Namibia, little attention has focused on food insecurity experienced by migrants in cities of the Global South. Building on earlier work in Namibia, this paper interrogates the relationship between migration and food security in the city of Windhoek. Windhoek has experienced significant rural–urban migration in recent years, especially since Namibia’s independence in 1990. Many migrants have settled in the northern and north-western areas of the city, primarily in the informal settlements. Most of the migrant households are poor and food insecure. In an effort to mitigate their insecure food situation, they make use of various strategies including receiving food transfers, obtaining food from informal markets, and other informal methods. This paper documents the dimensions and variations in food security amongst migrant households and examines the linkages between migration and food insecurity in a rapidly-growing African city. It was the first time a church in Namibia had come out publicly against the South African government, and after the publication of the “Open Letter,” Anglican and Roman Catholic churches in Namibia reacted with solidarity. -
