00:00:00 Music Transition “Switchblade Comb” by Mobius Vanchocstraw
00:00:00 Music Transition “Switchblade Comb” by Mobius VanChocStraw. A jaunty, jazzy tune reminiscent of the opening theme of a movie. Music continues at a lower volume as April introduces herself and her guest, and then it fades out. 00:00:08 April Wolfe Host Welcome to Switchblade Sisters, where women get together to slice and dice our favorite action and genre films. I’m April Wolfe. Every week, I invite a new female filmmaker on. A writer, director, actor, or producer, and we talk—in depth—about one of their fave genre films. Perhaps one that’s influenced their own work in some small way. Today, you know, you may know that we are social distancing, so remote recording of course. Um, Chicken’s in the other room, so you might not hear her screaming. Um, the wild parrots are out, though. You may hear that flock passing by. Um, so sound is a little bit different in the studio than uh, it usually is. Everything else is pretty much the same, except for today, our guest is different. Our guest is writer-director Karen Maine. Hi, Karen! 00:00:49 Karen Guest Hi! Thanks for having me. Maine 00:00:51 April Host Um, Karen, are you in Los Angeles right now, or are you elsewhere? 00:00:54 Karen Guest I am in Green Point, Brooklyn. 00:00:56 April Host You’re in Brooklyn. Uh, you guys have tornadoes or anything over there right now? You guys good? 00:01:01 Karen Guest Yeah, we’re good. -

Today, de Bont and his wife Trish display Netherlands,” he says. “But when I relocated to the more than 400 photographs, as well as many other United States to make movies, I found that there was a artworks, in their Los Angeles County home. There were many from all over the world come to view their unique galleries that had photographic exhibits, much more collection, which includes many rare pieces. than you would see in Europe. I got excited right away.” says. “You can’t just buy anything and everything. Make a selection of the things you’re really interested in. What I learned from other collectors and from museums was that you should have a clear focus. Once you have that, acquire multiple works by artists you really love and by artists from different periods. I didn’t want our collection to become encyclopedic but rather to be a collection of various movements.” CAPTURING LIFE ON THE STREET One of the movements he eventually began to acquire was that of ‘street photographer’ Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990), who was 31 years old when his iconic photobook Love on the Left Bank brought him international acclaim. -

Koolhaas, Constant and the Dutch Culture in the 60'S, Bart Lootsma
C'était une grande expérience..... 2) Rem Koolhaas It is an intriguing photograph in itself. On the far left, we see the artist/architect Constant Nieuwenhuys in his atelier in Amsterdam. He points towards a complex construction in the background. Two figures stand next to him, but the ink on the pink paper has faded to the point that they are nearly unrecognizable. The image originally accompanied an interview with Constant published in a 1966 issue of the Haagse Post, a leading Dutch weekly magazine, on the occasion of the presentation of his work in the Dutch pavillion at the Venice Biennale. 3) The interviewers are art critic Betty van Garrel and -on the far right of the picture, 22 years old and with a Beatles-hairdo - Rem Koolhaas. At first, it may not seem strange to see Koolhaas pictured with Constant; given Koolhaas' place in the architectural world today, it seems logical that he would have been attentive to Constant's work in the sixties. -

IN FOCUS: Speed Staying On, Or Getting
IN FOCUS: Speed Staying on, or Getting off (the Bus): Approaching Speed in Cinema and Media Studies by TINA KENDALL, editor t seems only appropriate to introduce this In Focus by invoking the 1994 Jan de Bont movie Speed—a film peculiarly fixated on the spectacle of human bodies moving at dangerous velocities, whether trapped in elevators, handcuffed to runaway subway trains, or (most memorably) hurtling down a half-constructed freeway Ion a Santa Monica bus rigged with a bomb set to detonate if its speedometer drops below fifty miles per hour. Much of the suspense of this high-concept movie hinges on the pressure that such fast-paced movement puts on both characters and spectators to react physically and affectively in time with the flow of action. Protagonist Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock) acts as both the focal point of the drama and surrogate for the audience as she takes command of the bus, weaving it dexterously through rush-hour traffic, deflecting danger, and thwarting disaster at regular micro-intervals. At a moment of particular dramatic intensity, Annie approaches a freeway exit; with the bus flanked on both sides by traffic, she looks anxiously at police officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves), shouting at him to make the call: “Stay on or get off ? Stay on or get off ?” As with other climactic moments in the film, Speed responds to this question not by slackening pace but by ramping it up and pushing straight through—each of its suspenseful situations being “resolved by acceleration.”1 On the one 1 Scott Higgins, “Suspenseful Situations: Melodramatic Narrative and the Contemporary Action Film,” Cinema Journal 47, no. -
