ii BROOKLYNRAIL CRI ICA L PE:RSP CTIVES O N A RTS, PO LITICS, AN D CU LTU RE Art October 5th, 2009 INCONVERSATION Mira Schor and Jason Andrew WITH PHONG BUI On the occasion of the painter Jack Tworkov’s retrospective Against Extremes: Five Decades of Painting, which will be on view at The UBS Art Gallery until October 27, 2009, and the publication of The Extreme of the Middle: Writings of Jack Tworkov, published by Yale University Press, both curator, Jason Andrew, and editor, Mira Schor, paid a visit toOff the Rail Hour at Art International Radio to talk with Publisher Phong Bui about Tworkov’s life and work. Phong Bui (Rail): Having read the whole volume of writing and seen the show, I was struck by his incredibly astute observations which seemed to me must have derived from the capacity for self- criticism and self-analysis, and which gave him a sense of deliberate eloquence in his continuity as a painter and thinker. There are two things I remember reading from the book which really stayed with me: one is the first sentence from the journal entry, which he started right after the war, 1947, the same year as his first one-man show at Charles Egan Gallery, “Style is the effect of pressure. […] In the artist, the origin of pressure is in his total life—heredity, experience, and will […]—but the direction flows according to the freedom he allows his creative impulse.” Two is the long article “Notes on My Painting,” which was published in Art in America in 1973 under the invitation of Brian O’Doherty, where in the end he says, “Above all -

Hollis Taggart to Examine the Work of Acclaimed Artist Knox Martin in Two Solo Presentations This May Opening at Frieze New York, May 1 – 5, 2019, And in a Concurrent Exhibition at the Gallery’s Primary Space in Chelsea, May 2 – 27, 2019 Knox Martin: Radical Structures to Include New Work by the Prolific 96-Year-Old Artist This May, Hollis Taggart will present an in-depth exploration of the work of acclaimed artist Knox Martin, with a solo presentation at Frieze New York and a concurrent solo exhibition at its primary location in Chelsea. Martin’s practice, which spans nearly seven decades, has engaged with the conceptual and aesthetic underpinnings of a wide range of artistic movements, from Cubism to Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art. His use of bright swaths of color, precise, architectural lines, and organic forms that reference the female body have resulted in energetic and vibrant compositions that speak to a visual vocabulary that is entirely his own. For the upcoming edition of Frieze New York, Hollis Taggart will present a focused selection of paintings, from the 1950s through the 1970s, providing an introduction to the artist’s early works. To foster a broader understanding of Martin’s practice, the gallery will also open Knox Martin: Radical Structures at its 521 W. 26th Street space on May 2, 2019. The exhibition at the gallery will emphasize in particular Martin’s paintings from the 1960s and 1970s, and also include several later works, among which are two new paintings created by the 96-year-old artist in 2019. -

BIOGRAPHY • PHILIP GUSTON PHILIP GUSTON • BIOGRAPHY 1913 Born Phillip Goldstein, June 27 in Montreal, to Louis and Rachel Goldstein, both of whom were immigrants from Odessa, Russia. Philip Guston is the youngest of seven children. 1919 Family moves to Los Angeles. 1923 Father commits suicide. 1926 Youthful aptitude for drawing leads Guston's mother to enroll him in a correspond- ence course from Cleveland School of Cartooning, Cleveland, Ohio. 1927 Attends Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, where he meets and develops a friendship with Jackson Pollock, Manuel Tolegian and Reuben Kadish. 1930 Wins a scholarship to attend Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, where he meets Musa McKim, but leaves the Institute after three months. Studies painting at home and works as an occasional extra in several movies. Sees Modern European painting in the collection of Walter and Louise Arensberg and first encounters the work of de Chirico. 1931 First solo exhibition at the Stanley Rose Bookshop and Gallery, Hollywood, organ- ised by the painter, Herman Cherry. 1932 Visits Pomona College, Claremont, California, with Pollock to see José Clemente Orozco at work on his mural “Prometheus.” 1933 Exhibits “Mother and Child,” 1930, Guston's first fully developed painting, at the 14th Annual Exhibition at the Los Angeles Municipal Museum. 1934 Travels to Mexico with Reuben Kadish and poet Jules Langsner. Paints the huge mural "The Struggle Against War and Facism" with Kadish, which still stands in the Museo de Michoacan, Morelia, Mexico. Completes commission with Kadish for the City of Hope Tuberculosis Sanatorium of the ILGWA, Duarte, California. 1936 Moves to New York City. -

McNeil p. 1 GEORGE McNEIL Chronology 1910 Born February 22, New York City to Irish-American working-class family. 1922-26 Attends art classes at Brooklyn Museum while studying at Brooklyn Tech High School. Influenced by the museum’s “Societe Anonyme” collection containing works by Picasso, Matisse, Duchamp and Picabia. 1927 Wins New York Art League Scholarship and enters General Art Program, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. 1927-32 Studies work by French Modernist artists and copies works in Metropolitan Museum of Art. Attends and is influenced by Vaclav Vytlacil’s lectures at the Art Students’ League, where he studies with Jan Matulka. Becomes acquainted with Arshile Gorky. 1932-36 Studies with Hans Hofmann, first at Art Students’ League, then at Hofmann’s own school. Begins to develop his own theories of modern art. Friends with Mercedes (Carles) Matter, Lee Krasner, Ray (Kaiser) Eames, Giorgio Cavallon, Harry Bowden and John Opper. 1935 Joins the W.P.A. and serves on the Federal Art project with artists such as Willem de Kooning and James Brooks. Supported by Burgoyne Diller on Williamsburg Mural Project. 1936 Founder member of American Abstract Artists with Ibram Lassaw, Ilya Bolotowsky, Rosalind Bengelsdorf and others. Combating the rejection of contemporary American abstract art by museums, galleries and critics, the AAA publishes brochures and organizes annual exhibitions of works by members. The following year, De Niro had his first solo exhibition at Guggenheim’s gallery, an extremely prestigious honor for a young painter. He continued to show at the highly regarded Charles Egan Gallery throughout the 1950s, but his career began to slip out of the critical spotlight. In the ensuing decades, he struggled to achieve the recognition that he desired. A 2014 Sundance Film Festival Selection, the HBO Documentary Films presentation REMEMBERING THE ARTIST ROBERT DE NIRO, SR. is a deeply moving portrait of the painter told by those who knew him best. The film will debut on HBO on Monday, June 9 at 9:00 p.m. ET. Actor Robert De Niro, Jr. reads from his father’s letters and journals and provides his own moving recollections of his father’s personal and professional struggles as part of his own mission to honor and preserve his father’s legacy and artwork.
