En wat vertelt dat over vandaag? Een poging tot meer historisch besef. Als kind vond ik dat vooral Zwarte Piet van het Sinterklaasfeest een spannende gebeurtenis maakte. Terwijl die bejaarde Sint op mij overkwam als een saai en vlak personage, was Zwarte Piet complex, contradictorisch, beangstigend en grappig tegelijk. Toen ik later ontdekte dat Zwarte Piet verstrengeld was met het koloniaal verleden van de Lage Landen, en ik dus geconfronteerd werd met mijn eigen blindheid, groeide mijn fascinatie alleen maar. Begrijpen waar Zwarte Piet vandaan komt, zou ons iets kunnen leren over de geschiedenis van de moderniteit en dus van het Europese imperialisme. Waar een kinderfeest allemaal goed voor kan zijn! Dat heel wat Nederlanders en Belgen zo verknocht zijn aan Zwarte Piet en er geen kritiek op dulden, schokt me meer dan de zwart geschminkte figuur zelf. De bijzonder heftige reactie van de overgrote meerderheid van inwoners van de Lage Landen had ik echter niet kunnen voorspellen. Dat heel wat Nederlanders en Belgen zo verknocht zijn aan Zwarte Piet en er geen kritiek op dulden, dat zij zich geen verandering kunnen inbeelden, schokt me meer dan de zwart geschminkte figuur zelf. Hoe kan een kritische blik op een secundair personage uit een kinderfeest witte volwassenen zo op stang jagen? Er moet iets anders aan de hand zijn.
