Signed: (MARC WILLIAM FLETCHER) Date: iii iv ABSTRACT South African political elites framed the country’s successful bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup in terms of nation-building, evoking imagery of South African unity. Yet, a pre-season tournament in 2008 featuring the two glamour soccer clubs of South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, and the global brand of Manchester United, revealed a racially fractured soccer fandom that contradicted these notions of national unity through soccer. -

Siphiwe Tshabalala’s clinical finish before the hour, completing an excellent passing move from the hosts, was cancelled out by Rafael Marquez’s goal going into the last ten minutes after poor marking from a short corner. Bafana Bafana played Everton’s Steven Pienaar off in-form lone striker Katlego Mphela, unlucky to hit the post towards the end, with Teko Modise and Tshabalala taking up the wide positions. There was no place for Matthew Booth in the XI who played very well during the Confederations Cup last year. The remaining English-based contingent for South Africa was Kagisho Dikgacoi (Fulham) and captain Aaron Mokoena (Portsmouth). Their Latin American opponents fielded an all Premier League front three; West Ham’s Guillermo Franco flanked by Giovani dos Santos of Spurs and Carlos Vela of Arsenal. PSV Eindhoven duo Carlos Salcido and Francisco Javier Rodriguez were joined in the defensive positions by Ricardo Osorio and Paul Aguilar who looked very bright going forward; Barcelona’s Rafael Marquez sat in front of the back four. -

Based on the analysis of the November 2011 exam, this is a section that learners generally perform well in. However, there are still key concepts that need attention. The following should be emphasised during this session: language (terminology used in data questions), use of the STAT mode on the calculator and how to interpret results and communicate conclusions. This session is designed in particular to help learners understand how to apply what they have learnt in grade 11 to answer questions regarding best fit and distribution of data. It is important that learners understand that it is crucial that they are able to interpret a set of data and communicate that. LESSON OVERVIEW Teacher Note: Remind learners of the concepts that they need to know from grade 11. The following concepts need to be understood: mean, mode, quartiles, range, interquartile range, five number summary, ogives, Box and Whisker plots, variance and standard deviation. It is also important to remind learners of the formulae given on the formula sheet. Learners must familiarise themselves with that sheet. -

No-one can say that this event will not touch them in some way – it will! But what about the people outside of Cape Town? What about the people living in the rural areas? What about the learners in our schools and the children playing soccer on the streets? Will anything have changed for them? I believe it already has, and I believe there is still much more to come. -

16 February 2010 MTN Backs the Education for All Global Campaign
16 February 2010 MTN backs the Education for All global campaign The MTN Group has again partnered with FIFA ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa, this time for the world’s largest cause-related campaign. Called 1GOAL: Education for All Mobile Campaign (1GOAL), the initiative will see MTN and its partners collect names and support from the public, footballers and celebrities to petition all governments to meet their “Education for All” target by 2015. 1GOAL will then deliver the millions of names collected through the campaign to the governments ahead of the next UN meeting on Millennium Development Goals in September 2010. MTN, FIFA, the GSM Association, other mobile operators, global football stars, educational champions, charities and campaigners have joined forces to support 1GOAL – a legacy initiative of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Operators serving more than 900 million mobile users, over 100 million of which are MTN subscribers, will deliver an international mobile communications campaign of unprecedented reach. The campaign combines the platform of the world’s biggest sporting occasion (the FIFA World Cup) with the world’s largest medium, to harness public support for 1GOAL. Kicking off on April 20, 52 days before the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ opening game at Soccer City in Johannesburg, 1GOAL will enable millions of people to sign up, via a host of mobile response mechanisms, demonstrating to global leaders and the UN that universal education is a universal demand. Says MTN Group Executive, Corporate Affairs, Ms Nozipho January-Bardill: “MTN regards the 1 GOAL: Education for All Mobile Campaign as a unique opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to social development in underdeveloped and emerging markets with a specific focus on education. -
