S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

The article on Dinophasma gwrigera (Westwood) (Bragg 1993) raised the question of how one determines dorsal and ventral surfaces on eggs in which the micropylar plate circles the egg. In the case of this species (by comparison with other Aschiphasmatinae eggs) it would appear that the dorsal surface has been correetly identified as that bearing the micropyle, since it is typical in eggs of this group that the operculum should be lilted ventrally and the micropylar plate should bear a ventral central stripe. Paracyphocrania lativentris Redtenbacher, 1908 was described in the third part of the well known monograph “Die Insektenfamilie der Phasmiden” (1906-1908) by C. Brun- ner v. Wattenwyl (1907) and J. Redtenbacher (1906 & 1908). The original description was based on a unique female but unfortunately the exact depository and locality of the specimen were unknown to Redtenbacher. The holotype has not subsequently been traced in any European museum, and hence presumed lost. Neither the characteriza- tion of the genus nor the original description of P. -

The Phasmid Study Group (PSG) was formed in 1980 to foster the study of phasmids. The group currently has several hundred members worldwide. The membership ranges from young children to professional entomologists. The PSG holds regular meetings and presents displays at all the major entomological exhibitions in the U.K. The PSG places emphasis on study by rearing and captive breeding and has a panel of breeders who distribute livestock to other members. The PSG produces two publications which are issued free to members. The Phasmid Study Group Newsletter is issued quarterly and contains news items, livestock information, details of exhibitions and meetings, and a variety of short articles on all aspects of phasmids. Phasmid Studies is issued on-line and in print. Typically it is produced biannually, in March and September. It contains longer articles on all aspects of phasmids, with an emphasis on natural history, captive breeding, taxonomy, and behavioural studies. Each issue contains abstracts of papers from other recent publications. Electronic copies of Phasmid Studies are deposited in the following libraries: British Library, U.K.; Hope Library, Oxford University Museum of Natural History, UK; Nottingham University Library, UK.
