Multiple ecomorphs are present in the stick insect fauna from Papua New Guinea, including the tree lobster, spiny, and long slender forms. While ecomorphs have long been recognized in phasmids, there has yet to be an attempt to objectively define and study the evolution of these ecomorphs. -

Key words Phasmida, Aretaon asperrimus, Breeding, Rearing. Classification This species was originally described as Obrimus asperrimus by Redtenbacher in 1906. In 1938 Rehn & Rehn established the new genus Aretaon (1938: 419), with asperrimus as the type species. I have examined the type specimens of this species and A. muscosus Redtenbacher, which are all in Vienna, and I found that the type specimens of A. asperrimus are all adults while those of A. muscosus are all nymphs. A. muscosus is distinguished by having more prominent spines, particularly on the front tibiae and the top of the abdomen. However, having reared A. asperrimus it is clear that nymphs of this genus are very spiny and these spines in particular are reduced when the insect becomes adult. It is therefore quite likely that A. asperrimus and A. muscosus are the same species. This possibility was considered and rejected by Gunther (1935: 123) but as he had not reared them he would not have known that the spines are reduced when the insects become adult. The species in culture is clearly A. asperrimus, however it has smaller spines than the type specimens so clearly the species is variable. The type specimens of A. muscosus are much more spiny than those in culture, I cannot therefore be certain that A. asperrimus and A. muscosus are the same species. As there is a strong possibility that they are the same species, I am listing the published references and distribution records for both species. -

Similarly the sub family Anisohibi(di)nae Zacher, 1911 baspriority overCarcinophorinae Hincks, 1954. Accordingly the former are used in the present work. A key for the discrimination of various subfamilies is given. The distinctive characters are based on various morphological character, mainly, on the body shape, shape of thoracic tergites, sternites and the male genitalia. It is proposed to erect a new subfamily Placolabidinae for the reception of Plac.:olabis Bey Bienko, 1959 as its type genus. This genus is very distinct from all t.he known genera of Anisolabidinae in having the median posterior prolongation of 8th sternite in males. Is·olaboidinae has been placed under this family by Srivastava (1996) which was transferred under Spongiphoridae (=Labidae) by Steinmann (1990). An attempt is made here to streamline the taxonomic status of various g~nera of AnisQlabidinae by providing akeyfortheirseparation. The main criteria fortheirdiscrilninatioll is based on the relative length of parameres besides its overall shape. The definition of various genera hOas been enlarged. The genera based on the shape of distal iobes and its associated stnlctures such as chiti nons accessory plates, shape and size of virga and the arrangement of teeth on chitinous pad may not prove t~ be stable characters since these vary intraspecifically. -

Spain. E-mail: [email protected] An update on the taxonomy and geographic distribution of Iberian Anisolabididae (Der- maptera) is provided. Former catalogues reported in the Iberian Peninsula three genera of Anisolabididae: Aborolabis, Anisolabis, and Euborellia. A revision of 487 specimens of Iberian and North African Anisolabidoidea permit to exclude the genus Aborolabis from the Iberian fauna, the re-assignation of inland Euborellia annulipes Iberian records to Euborellia moesta, and the exclusion of Aborolabis angulifera from Northwestern Africa. Examination of type materials of Aborolabis mordax and Aborolabis cerrobarjai allows to propose the treatment of A. cerrobarjai as a junior synonym of A. mordax. The diagnostic characters of Euborellia his- panica are included within the local variability found in E. moesta. I propose that E. hispanica should be treated as a junior synonym of E. moesta. INTRODUCTION The Iberian fauna of Dermaptera, including Anisolabididae Verhoeff, 1902, has been the subject of diverse revisionary (Bolívar 1876, 1897, Lapeira & Pascual 1980, Herrera Mesa 1980, Bivar de Sousa 1997) and compilatory works (Herrera Mesa 1999). These revisions together with the monograph of the Fauna of France (Albouy & Caussanel 1990) and the on-line information included in Fauna Europaea (Haas 2010), rendered the image of Dermaptera as a well known group in continental western Europe. -

Abstract This paper describes a trip (Q six locations in Sabah, Borneo, during October 2003. A 101:11 of around 20 species of stick insects were found al four of these locations, including an undescribed species found at 3300m on Moum Kinabalu. The most commonly encountered species in the lowland forest were Lonchodes spp., Haaniella spp., and Asceles margarilatus. Handle with care Stick insects Species: Indian stick insect (there are lots of others which could be listed but this is the most common) Scientific names: Carausius morosus Description The Indian stick insect is the most commonly available of all stick insect species. Indian stick insects are normally olive green, but brown and yellow-green colours occur too. Their twig and leaf-like appearance gives them good camouflage. An adult stick insect measures about 7.5cm after about five or six skin moults and will live for about a year. Life in the wild Stick insects live in tropical and semi tropical areas of the world. They are vegetarians and eat the leaves of plants, shrubs and trees. Privet and bramble leaves are favourites. In the wild they are usually eaten by birds, so stick insects tend to feed at night when birds are not around. Source of animals Stick insects can be bought from pet shops or specialist breeders. RSPCA animal centres also occasionally have stick insects needing new homes. Prior knowledge and preparation Before keeping stick insects, it is crucial that any potential keeper finds out about them and how to provide for them in captivity. Only then can an informed decision be made about whether s/he can provide the facilities, time, financial means and long-term commitment to look after them properly. Suitable accommodation, food and the necessary accessories should be bought and prepared before taking the animal home. Novice keepers should also take the time to talk to experienced stick insect keepers and professionals – such as a vet – for further advice. -

One new genus and four new species, Hainanphasma cristata Ho gen. nov. spec. nov., H. diaoluoshanensis Ho spec. nov., Py- laemenes pui Ho spec. nov. and Pylaemenes shirakii Ho & Brock spec. nov., are described and illustrated. A new combi- nation is proposed: Planispectrum hainanensis (Chen & He, 2008) comb. nov. is transferred from Pylaemenes Stål, 1875 and its male and egg are described for the first time. The occurrence of Orestes mouhotii (Bates, 1865) in China is re- confirmed assessed by an adult specimen collected from Yunnan Province. Pylaemenes guangxiensis (Bi & Li, 1994) is reported for the first time from Vietnam outside the range of China. Keys to the genera and species of the Chinese Datam- inae are given. With illustrations by P.E. Bragg. Abstract This report summarises the care and breeding of Anisomorpha monstrosa Hebard, the largest species in the genus. Behaviour and defence mechanism are also discussed along with descriptions of the eggs, nymphs, and adults. Key words Phasmida, Anisomorpha monstrosa, Pseudophasmatinae, Rearing, Distribution, Defence. Taxonomy Anisomorpha monstrosa belongs to the sub-family Pseudophasmatinae. It was described in 1932 by Hebard (1932: 214) and is the largest species in the genus. The type specimen is a female collected from Merida, in Yucatan, Mexico. Culture History The original culture of this species was collected in Belize, approximately 150km north of Belize City by Jan Meerman in 1993 or 1994 (D'Hulster, personal communication). -

A MARANTE Abstract A synonymyc catalogue for the species of Neotropical Crabronidae and Sphecidae is presented, including all synonyms, geographical distribution and pertinent references. The catalogue includes 152 genera and 1834 species (1640 spp. in Crabronidae, 194 spp. in Sphecidae), plus 190 species recorded from Nearctic Mexico (168 spp. in Crabronidae, 22 spp. in Sphecidae). The former Sphecidae (sensu Menke, 1997 and auct.) is divided in two families: Crabronidae (Astatinae, Bembicinae, Crabroninae, Pemphredoninae and Philanthinae) and Sphecidae (Ampulicinae and Sphecinae). The following subspecies are elevated to species: Podium aureosericeum Kohl, 1902; Podium bugabense Cameron, 1888. New names are proposed for the following junior homonyms: Cerceris modica new name for Cerceris modesta Smith, 1873, non Smith, 1856; Liris formosus new name for Liris bellus Rohwer, 1911, non Lepeletier, 1845; Liris inca new name for Liris peruanus Brèthes, 1926 non Brèthes, 1924; and Trypoxylon guassu new name for Trypoxylon majus Richards, 1934 non Trypoxylon figulus var. majus Kohl, 1883.
