[fieldguides.fieldmuseum.org] [1086] version 1 11/2018 La Mancha is a natural reserve area managed by Instituto de Ecología, A. C. The reserve comprises several vegetation types in only 82.29 ha. In this natural reserve, butterflies are very common and they are an important insect group as flower visitors. The butterfly species in this guide were collected from six vegetation types distributed in this tropical coastal ecosystem. The aim of this guide is to provide knowledge about the diversity of butterflies to local people, for educational proposes and ecotourism. The images in this field guide include the dorsal and ventral position of each butterfly species with 1-cm scale. Supporting Information Files Appendix S1 Definitions of the metrics used in this study to describe network structure. Network level parameters: (1) Species richness. Total number of plants and animals in the bipartite network. (2) Connectance. Realized proportion of possible links: sum of links divided by number of cells in the matrix (the latter being the product between the number of higher trophic level species –animals, in our case- and the number of lower trophic level species –plants, in our case). (3) Interaction asymmetry (or interaction strength asymmetry). Difference between the interaction strength (i.e. the relative frequency) of each animal species i on each plant species j and its reverse from the plant perspective, standardized by the sum of interaction strength values of species i on j and of species j on i (Bascompte et al. 2006; extended by Blüthgen 2010). Values vary between −1 and 1, where positive values indicate a high dependence of animal on plant species and negative values indicate the opposite. Given that this variable, by its mathematical definition, is closely associated with web asymmetry, this correlation is accounted with null models (see further details in Blüthgen 2010). Thus, for each network in the data set, we computed 1000 randomized interaction matrices simulated with the Patefield algorithm, which randomly redistributes interaction events among all cells of the matrix while holding the number of interaction events per species constant. Thus, web asymmetries were held constant in all simulated networks, while interactions were reallocated between pairs of species according to species interaction frequencies. The difference between observed asymmetries of interaction strength and the mean asymmetry of interaction strength across the 1000 simulations gives the null- model-corrected asymmetry of interaction strength. -

Insect migrations involve millions of individuals and are often spectacular. However, in general, virtually nothing is known about their structure. With anthropogenically induced global change, we risk losing most of these migrations before they are even described. We used stable hydrogen isotope (δ2H) measurements of wings of seven species of butterflies (Libytheana carinenta, Danaus gilippus, Phoebis sennae, Asterocampa leilia, Euptoieta claudia, Euptoieta hegesia, and Zerene cesonia) salvaged as roadkill when migrating in fall through a narrow bottleneck in northeast Mexico. These data were used to depict the probabilistic origins in North America of six species, excluding the largely local E. hegesia. We determined evidence for long-distance migration in four species (L. carinenta, E. claudia, D. glippus, Z. cesonia) and present evidence for panmixia (Z. cesonia), chain (Libytheana Citation: Hobson, K.A.; Kusack, J.W.; Mora-Alvarez, B.X. Origins of Six carinenta), and leapfrog (Danaus gilippus) migrations in three species. Our investigation underlines Species of Butterflies Migrating the utility of the stable isotope approach to quickly establish migratory origins and connectivity in through Northeastern Mexico: New butterflies and other insect taxa, especially if they can be sampled at migratory bottlenecks. -
Annotated Checklist of the Butterflies of Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State
AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE BUTTERFLIES (LEPIDOPTERA: RHOPALOCERA) OF BENTSEN-RIO GRANDE STATE VALLEY PARK AND VICINITY JUNE, 1974 Published by TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT BENTSEN-RIO GRANDE VALLEY STATE PARK P.O. 30X 988; MISSION, TEXAS 78572 INTRODUCTION The species listed here in are primarily a result of the collecting by the authors during the period 1972-1973. Certain important records of the previous several years are also included. Additionally, the checklist incorporates records of a number of other lepidopterists. The primary focus of the checklist, then, is upon recent collecting, rather than being an attempt to list all known records from the Mid-Valley area. All lepidopterists collecting in the park and vicinity are urged to send copies of their records to the authors and/or the park authorities. A number of species on the list have been taken in Hidalgo Co. but not yet within the actual confines of the park; the annotations will indicate which species these are. Some of these have been taken at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, approximately thirty miles down river, in habitats similar to those within the park. Others have been taken within several miles of the park, in nearby towns and along roadsides. These species can be reasonably expected to occur in the park, and their inclusion upon this list should alert the collector to their possible presence. The annotations have been kept necessarily brief. They are intended to aid the visiting lepidopterist in evaluating the significance of his catches. Local larval food plants are given where known. Much, however, is still to be learned regarding the life histories of even some of the commoner species. -

In view of the importance of sampling these areas, the present study conducted the first butterfly inventory of a coastal area in the state of Paraná. Samples were taken in the Floresta Estadual do Palmito, from February 2014 through January 2015, using insect nets and traps for fruit-feeding butterfly species. A total of 200 species were recorded, in the families Hesperiidae (77), Nymphalidae (73), Riodinidae (20), Lycaenidae (19), Pieridae (7) and Papilionidae (4). Particularly notable records included the rare and vulnerable Pseudotinea hemis (Schaus, 1927), representing the lowest elevation record for this species, and Temenis huebneri korallion Fruhstorfer, 1912, a new record for Paraná. These results reinforce the need to direct sampling efforts to poorly inventoried areas, to increase knowledge of the distribution and occurrence patterns of butterflies in Brazil. Se realizó un estudio sobre diversidad de mariposas en dos condiciones de selva baja espinosa caducifolia, en el ANP Altas Cumbres, Tamaulipas, México. Se establecieron dos transectos permanentes, uno por cada condición. El muestreo se realizó de manera mensual en cada sitio mediante red entomológica aérea, durante diciembre del 2015 a noviembre del 2016. Se obtuvieron 488 ejemplares para la condición conservada, distribuidos en 48 especies, y 692 ejemplares distribuidos en 38 especies para la condición perturbada. Las pruebas tanto para la abundancia como para la riqueza específica entre ambas condiciones de la vegetación, no revelaron diferencias significativas, excepto la diversidad que en condición de vegetación perturbada resultó ser mayor que en la conservada.
