  • A New Fashion Exhibition Shows Nordic British
press release A new fashion exhibition shows Nordic British In its new fashion exhibition, Nordiska museet in Stockholm shows how Nordic fashion, clothes styles and lifestyle are influenced by Britain’s creative industry. The narrative runs from the Middle Ages to the present day, illustrated through fabrics, patterns, clothes and phenomena that have been shaped into a part of everyday life in the Nordics. British: Ever So Nordic opens on 29 March. Cardigan, jumper and trench coat. Tartans and Doc Martens boots. String vest and trousers by Per Götesson from Flowery wallpaper, pyjamas and a cup of tea. Football, tennis 2017. Photo: Peter Segemark and a stroll in the woods wearing wellingtons. These are such commonplace elements of our everyday life that we may not reflect on where they come from. With Brexit around the corner, Nordiska museet in Stockholm shows how centuries of trade relations with Britain have affected Nordic fashions and lifestyle. There are numerous points of contact between Sweden and Britain, and in many ways there is a shared outlook. Nordic design has been influenced through history by styles from Japan to France, Germany and the USA. The British cultural influence is highly noticeable in our daily life and it has spread through all classes in society. Many people are likely to have a cardigan, jumper, rain coat or pyjamas at home, says Helen Persson, curator of the exhibition and head of Nordiska Wedding dress in white silk from 1854, Sweden. museet’s Centre for Dress and Fashion. Photo: Peter Segemark The exhibition British – Ever So Nordic shows imported luxury embroidery and woollen fabrics that are several hundred years old.

  • C/Iround the Fashion
c/Iround the fashion This preview of Golf Magazine's exclusive forecast spotlights the trends in the pro shop's most increasingly profitahle operation. BY JOYGE HAKLAR Golf Golfdom Fashion Editor ThERE are so many new trends in golf apparel this year, there should be no trouble stocking the shop with interesting and exciting merchandise. The fashions featured on the next four pages represent a sampling of what will be presented in the April issue of GOLF MAGAZINE as the forecast of the new trends in design and color for golf wear. Men's wear revives a classic item with modern form and content—knickers. Once heavy, floppy and uncomfortably warm, the "plus-fours" and increasingly popular "plus-twos" are now more tailored, and manufactured with a blend of lightweight fabrics that stretch and breathe. In some cases, the knee buckles have been replaced by stretch bottoms, which keep the knickers in place. Always popular among the older golfers, this style is being picked up by the younger set, which favors the lighter colors and attractive plaids and checks. Slacks are also trimmer and appear in fabrics made of the miracle fibers of Arnel, Dacron and Fortrel. The standard v-neck cardigans are still the most popular sweaters, but loose-fitting pullovers have gained acceptance, particularly short-sleeved sweaters (another new trend). Womens golf wear has finally taken on its own look. Gone are the days of imitating the men's fashions—the gals can be as feminine on as well as off the course. Let's hope it stays that way.

  • Fun Fashions for Fellas by Pegge Blinco
Fun Fashions for Fellas By Pegge Blinco With the hope of urging our gentlemen into fashions of our era, I offer suggestions for doable clothing – off the rack – simple, easy and uncomplicated. One of the best items a fella should have in his closet should be a light, putty-colored Docker pant or light colored washable linen slack. Add a white or pin-striped long sleeve shirt, a four-in-hand tie or bow tie – or no tie, suspenders or belt. For footwear, saddle shoes, two-toned wing tips or cap toes, light colored canvas shoes with rubber soles or buckskins … but NEVER athletic shoes!! A driving cap or straw boater completes the outfit. When the weather got warm, sleeves were rolled to and above the elbows, as short sleeves did not exist on men’s shirts until late 1931. To kick this up a notch, use the same light slacks and shirt, unroll the sleeves, add a blazer, preferably dark colored, single or double breasted, a bow tie, or four-in-hand tie – length was short – 45”, same shoes, straw boater or Panama hat, and he’s suitably dressed for lunch or afternoon party. 2006-03.doc Page 1 Revised 2/23/06 We are all familiar with the sports attire of knickers or plus fours, generally used for golfing, hiking and/or motoring. The home seamstress can create a pair by cutting 13-14” off wide trouser pants. This will allow for enough blouse to be 4” below the knee when finished. If this doesn’t work for you, contact www.tbarryknickers.com.

Dressing by-the-Book: The Significance of the Sample Book in the Marketing of American Men's Apparel 1925-1930 by Diane Maglio Dressing by-the-book, or using illustrated and swatched sample books to buy fashionable apparel, offered the American man extensive assortments of fabrics, colors, and styles, often more than he could get from the local merchant's stock. The sample book was convenient for the seller because he could offer more apparel options to his customers without purchasing inventory in advance of sales. Sample books were used both by retailers selling custom-made clothing for wholesale manufacturers and direct sellers. Direct sellers, representing manufacturing companies, carried a sample book straight to the customer by-passing the retail venue.

1850-1900 1901-1919 1920 The Morgue File Bailey Lovell 1930 1940 1950 1960 Victorian Era (1850-1900) The Victorian Era was quite literally named after Queen Victoria who reigned from 1837-1901. During this time, the British empire abolished slavery which freed more than 800,000 slaves at the time. Travel was revolutionized by the invention of the steam powered railway. Queen Victoria led London into a sixteen year long mourning after the death of her husband which revolutionized the way civilians dressed. The style of dress was very muted colors with no shine to the jewelry worn and London was very somber during this time. Corsets were very important during this time and shaped the way the woman’s body would be for the rest of her life. Many women during the day would keep themselves occupied by changing up to seven times throughout the day for their daily activities including horseback riding and tea time. The fashion world was revolutionized by the invention of the sewing machine which led to the first every fashion designer, Charles Worth.Charles Worth was the inventor of the polonaise skirt and began to use real women as models which he called mannequins.
