Report for 2013. Vogelwarte 53: 229-260. This report is the ninth one of a series and presents the results of a comprehensive literature screening in search for new bird taxa described in 2013, namely new genera, species and subspecies worldwide. We tracked names of ten genera, 25 species and three subspecies (one additional for 2010) new to science which, according to the International Code of Zoological No- menclature were correctly described. On the basis of molecular genetic analyses new genera for species or species groups were proposed within Columbidae (2), Pipridae (1), and Thamnophilidae (7). Though various species concepts are concerned and “species” may have differing biological meanings, the number of 25 new bird species described in a single year is extraordinarily high. It is unsurpassed at least within the last hundred years. The new species refer to Hydrobatidae (1), Tytonidae (1), Strigi- dae (2), Bucconidae (1), Tyrannidae (1), Pipromorphidae (2), Thamnophilidae (5), Rhinocryptidae (1), Dendrocolaptidae (4), Furnariidae (1), Corvidae (1), Cisticolidae (1), Timaliidae (1), Polioptilidae (1), Passerellidae (1), and Thraupidae (1). Five of the new species described refer to Non-Passeriformes, the remainder 20 species to Passeriformes. In several cases the popula- tions in question now considered to represent a new species were known since long. But only substantial studies of their songs, genetics and/or ecology led to description of new formerly unrecognized species. Most cases refer to the Neotropics.The dis- tributional areas of the new species often are minute, restricted to remote and difficultly to access areas, often small islands and were hitherto overlooked due to their similarity to closely related species. Due to their limited ranges species new to science are often already endangered when detected. In a taxon sequence by genus/species/subspecies the newly described taxa have following origin: Neotropics (10/20/2), Palaearctic (-/1/2; one already in 2010) and Indo-Malaya (0/4/0). A number of splits, namely those of known species into allospecies as the geographic representatives of a superspecies are also addressed, but these are restricted to the Palaearctic and Indo-Malayan regions. Such splits markedly influenced species numbers especially in the Alcedinidae (kingfishers, Ceyx) and in the Pycnonotidae (bulbuls, Thapsinillas). We discuss possible flaws in new descriptions and certain splits, regardless of the species concept addressed. However, in general this report should be taken as a documen- tation of new taxa, not as a critical review of recent changes in bird taxonomy and bird descriptions. ✉ JM: Institut für Zoologie, D-55099 Mainz. SHELDON Based on distinctive morphological and vocal characters we describe a new species of lowland tailorbird Orthotomus from dense humid lowland scrub in the floodplain of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers of Cambodia. Genetic data place it in the O. atrogularis–O. ruficeps–O. sepium clade. All data suggest that the new species is most closely related to O. atrogularis, from which genetic differences are apparently of a level usually associated with subspecies. However the two taxa behave as biological species, existing locally in sympatry and even exceptionally in syntopy, without apparent hybridisation. The species is known so far from a small area within which its habitat is declining in area and quality. However, although birds are found in a number of small habitat fragments (including within the city limits of Phnom Penh), most individuals probably occupy one large contiguous area of habitat in the Tonle Sap floodplain. We therefore recommend it is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. The new species is abundant in suitable habitat within its small range. Further work is required to understand more clearly the distribution and ecology of this species and in particular its evolutionary relationship with O. atrogularis. Legendary and iconic avian gems such as Giant and White- shouldered Ibis, White-rumped Falcon, Bengal Florican, Greater Adjutant, Black-headed, Great Slaty and Pale-headed Woodpeckers, Germain’s Peacock-Pheasant, Green Peafowl, Bar-bellied Pitta, Red-vented and Indochinese Barbets, Dalat Shrike-babbler, Indochinese Green Magpie, Red-billed Scimitar Babbler, Grey-crowned Crocias by Luyen Nguyen Orange-breasted and Collared Laughingthrushes, Vietnamese Cutia, Grey-crowned Crocias, Yellow-billed Nuthatch and Vietnamese Greenfinch are just some of the many mouth-watering highlights available on this superb birding adventure. The trip focused on the best birding localities and targeted the endemics, near- endemics and other sought-after species on offer in each country.

Photo by guide Doug Gochfeld. We met in the ancient city of Siem Reap eager to explore the country at the heart of Southeast Asia. We started off adjacent to the legendary Angkor temple complex. Tonlé Sap, the region’s largest and most ecologically important lake, lay to our south, and a vast dry forest unfurled to our east, awaiting the company of our binoculars. From our comfortable base of 6 nights in Siem Reap we struck out for day trips to the ancient and unparalleled Angkor Wat, Ang Trapeang Thma Reservoir (the massive irrigation project built by the Khmer Rouge, known in short as ATT), and the aforementioned Tonlé Sap and its fantastic Prek Toal Biosphere reserve. We then traveled east, through the Prolay Grasslands and into the dry dipterocarp forest that covers much of the country’s north. We had plenty of time in this extremely birdy dry forest, with three nights at Tmatboey and a night at the special vulture restaurant at Baeng Toal. After our wonderful time in the dry country, the Mekong River and borderlands to the East had a lot to live up to, and they did that and then some, starting with our birding in the Kratie area and the associated boat trip on the Mekong River.

It is also home to several of Asia’s most desirable species that include Giant and White-shouldered Ibis, White- rumped Falcon, White-winged Duck, Mekong Wagtail, Bengal Florican, Cambodian Tailorbird and Chinese Grassbird. Wintering Manchurian Reed Warbler and Yellow-breasted Buntings were greatly appreciated, and in neighbouring Laos the recently described Bare-faced Bulbul inhabits the limestone karst of the western Annamites. Our tour covered the wonderful temples of the Angkor complex with Bayon, Ta Prohm and Angkor Wat the main features. Here the forests were home to Hainan Blue Flycatcher, White-throated Rock Thrush, Asian Barred Owlet and Black Baza. Birding around the grasslands east of Tonle Sap we found the Critically Endangered Bengal Florican, Manchurian Reed Warbler, several Eastern Marsh and Pied Harriers. Heading north into the dry forests along the Thai border we found White-winged Duck after a patient dusk vigil, White- shouldered and Giant Ibis included the latter on the nest attending a chick. Both Collared Falconet and White- rumped Falcon put in appearances, several woodpeckers that included huge Great Slaty Woodpeckers doing their spread wing, waving display, a vibrant Rufous-bellied and smart looking Black-headed Woodpeckers were highlights. We then continued east to the Mekong River for Mekong Wagtail and Irrawaddy River Dolphins before heading south via some secondary habitat for Cambodian Tailorbird, a recently described endemic.

    Greater Adjutants at Prek Toal (Craig Robson) CAMBODIA & LAOS 20 FEBRUARY – 7 MARCH 2015 LEADER: CRAIG ROBSON Another great tour to this bird-rich region brought us a long list of memorable sightings. Fine sunny weather prevailed, and we could have done with some rain by the end! In Laos, Bare-faced Bulbul, Sooty Babbler, Lao Langur and Jerdon’s Bushchat all showed well, and we also bumped into Yellow-vented Green Pigeon and Pale-headed Woodpecker. The bulk of the specialities were in Cambodia of course, with Chestnut- headed Partridge, Milky Stork and Greater Adjutant at one of the largest remaining ‘large waterbird’ breeding colonies in Asia, White-shouldered and Giant Ibises, White-rumped Falcon, Bengal Floricans (with some males displaying), flocks of Sarus Cranes, a scoped Pale-capped Pigeon, Spotted and Brown Wood Owls, an incredible 15 species of woodpecker, including Rufous-bellied Yellow-crowned and Black-headed, Blue Pitta, Mekong Wagtail, Manchurian Reed Warbler, the newly described Cambodian Tailorbird, and Asian Golden Weaver to name but a few. Most unexpected was a Great White Pelican at Prek Toal, for which there are few contemporary records. Our total of 354 bird species was by far the highest ever recorded on this tour. The pools, grassland and weedy patches harboured a surprisingly good range of winter migrants, and we enjoyed unusually good views of Bluethroat, Siberian Rubythroat and Thick-billed Warbler.

    Fuchs and Zuccon Avian Res (2018) 9:31 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40657-018-0123-8 Avian Research RESEARCH Open Access On the genetic distinctiveness of tailorbirds (Cisticolidae: Orthotomus) from the South‑east Asian mainland with the description of a new subspecies Jérôme Fuchs* and Dario Zuccon Abstract Background: The Cambodian Tailorbird (Orthotomus chaktomuk) was one of the most recent major ornithological discoveries in South-east Asia as it originated from lowland seasonally fooded scrub within the densely inhabited foodplain around the Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers (Cambodia). The Cambodian Tailorbird is sister to the Dark-necked Tailorbird (O. atrogularis) with very limited genetics and biometric diferentiation. Between 2004 and 2012, evidences of a new population of Ashy Tailorbird (O. rufceps) in SE Cambodia/Vietnam accumulated but no museum specimens were ever reported. The Ashy Tailorbird currently consists of eight subspecies among which the closest geographical populations, O. r. cineraceus (SE Burma to Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung) and O. r. borneoensis (Borneo), are allopatric. Subspecifc identifcation of the Cambodian Ashy Tailorbirds individuals was not possible because of the limited diferences in plumage among subspecies. Methods: We inspected the Orthotomus rufceps specimens housed at the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle (Paris) and discovered fve specimens of O. rufceps collected by Louis Rodolphe Germain in ‘Cochinchina’ (correspond- ing to southern Vietnam) during the nineteenth century. We sequenced one mitochondrial locus and gathered biometric data from these specimens and compared them with other Orthotomus lineages. However, some of the rarest birds in Southeast Asia, now gone from neighboring countries, still remain in the vast forests and relatively pristine wetlands of Cambodia. After emerging from the grip of a -har rowing war-torn 20th century, stability and a growing infrastructure have returned, welcoming back conserva- tion groups and birders alike. Since the 1990s, a number of very exciting discoveries have been made. These remarkable finds include: a surviving, and thus far stable, population of Giant Ibis, one of the world’s rarest birds; two newly described species, the Mekong Wagtail and Cambodian Tailorbird; and the resurrection of spe- cies long thought extinct, the Orange-necked Partridge. The largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, Tonle Sap, and its surrounding wetlands support populations of several endangered waterbirds, including Greater Adjutant. Other rarities found along our route include: White-shouldered Ibis, White-winged Duck, Green Peafowl, White- rumped Falcon, Bengal Florican, Rufous-winged Buzzard, and Black-headed Woodpecker. The same habitats that harbor these birds are still home to a list of mammals including: Eld’s deer, guar, black-shanked douc (langur), long-tailed macaque, yellow-cheeked crested gibbon, gaur (an Asian wild bison), common-palm and small- toothed civet, giant flying squirrel, lesser mouse-deer and pygmy loris. It is no wonder that Cambodia now right- fully claims its place among the list of “must visit” birding destinations.

I would really like to thank all the participants who “kept calm and carried on,” albeit with increased hygiene measures. This was my tenth tour of this relatively small southeast Asian nation, and as usual, it did not disappoint. Cambodia is the go-to destination for a number of globally threatened birds that survive nowhere else or are becoming increasingly difficult to see elsewhere. It is great for woodpeckers and owls and hosts a great cross-section of Asian glamour birds including a recently discovered endemic. It is, of course, most famous for Angkor Wat, and this was to be our first destination. Giant faces loom out of the sandstone at the Bayon Temple in Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat this year was superb, greatly enhanced by the near lack of tourists. It is also a lovely birding site and, as ever on this tour, we were up early to get in the best of the cool morning and the peak hour bird activity. Wandering through teak woodlands of trees of enormous stature, we managed good looks at a fine Chestnut-winged Cuckoo, our only Victor Emanuel Nature Tours 2 Cambodia, 2020 Alexandrine Parakeet, male White-throated Rock-Thrush, male Hainan Blue-Flycatcher, and a confiding Forest Wagtail.
