RCC supports RYC staying in Rhossili for reasons of continuity, village vibrancy, and for the younger people growing into this age range. Council asked SW to investigate and act accordingly. 6. Elections 2012: Council voted Jeff Higgins (JH)(3) and Tom Higgs (2), therefore JH to be co-opted. SW to confirm to JH and invite to next meeting. DC signed acceptance forms. Nil expense fo rms all returned to Swansea C&C except NR (to be completed). 7. Grant opportunities for Rhossili: Jo Scott, Chair of Swansea Rural Action, and Rhossili resident, advised RCC on which grants are appropriate and how other villages have been spending them.     Environmental Events Digwyddiadau Amgylcheddol Swansea 2010 Abertawe Introduction The 2010 Environmental Events leaflet lists details of about 300 events taking place in and around Swansea from February to December. These include guided walks and cycle rides through some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, and many talks and workshops/training courses where you can learn about wildlife and environmental issues . There are also lots of children’s activities in local parks, on beaches or in other interesting places. Many of these events are FREE or at very low cost so everyone can get involved. The United Nations has declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity as a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives. Why not take the opportunity this year to take part in at least one of the events listed in this leaflet to enjoy and learn more about wildlife in our area. This leaflet is compiled by the City and County of Swansea Environment Department’s Nature Conservation Team with the support of Swansea Environmental Education Forum (SEEF) and funding from the Countryside Council for Wales.   • Sir Rice Mansell of Margam the Family of Rice Mansell Originated From
    Sir Rice Mansell of Margam The family of Rice Mansell originated from France and they arrived in Gower, west of Swansea in the latter part of the 13th Century. It was in the reign of Edward I, that the knight, Sir Hugh Mansell one of Rice’s ancestors, married Isabel, the heiress of Sir John Penres of Penrice Castle. The family were then lucky throughout their marriage to acquire land at Oxwich, the manorial lordship next to Penrice, right on the South Western coast of the Gower peninsular. The Mansell family were now truly an established family in Gower and more importantly that of Glamorganshire. In 1510, Rice Mansell inherits the family estates and starts construction of his new project that of Oxwich Castle. This was interrupted by the wars in France, Scotland and Ireland. He was a veteran soldier and saw service as a sailor in the Navy. This was quite common at the time, as ships were used to move the army. It was therefore common that army commanders were also commanders in the navy. Rice Mansell was then knighted for service to the crown and country. Sir Rice then took his new position in life to heart and excelled in politics and government, both locally and nationally. Always supporting King Henry VIII, who had knighted him of course! Sir Rice Mansell loyalty to the king was rewarded when the king appointed Sir Rice as Chamberlain of Chester and was a member of the Council of Wales and the Marches, which met in Ludlow but governed Wales for the King.

Keeping in Touch We occasionally send out emails about social events, changes to the programme and to let you know what’s happening in the group. If you would like to receive these details, please email the secretary. Additional walks after the programme has been printed These may be planned at short notice. Details will be emailed to members and appear on the web at least 5 days before the walk. If you can volunteer to lead a walk, please contact the Weekday co-ordinator. Joining a walk Our walks are social and newcomers are especially welcome. If you have enjoyed three of our walks and wish to continue to walk regularly with us, we will be pleased to invite you to become a member. Occasionally there are 1st year discounts so please ask for details. You will need suitable footwear and clothing, enough food and drink plus a small First Aid pack. While the safety of members is always of paramount concern, accidents may occasionally occur so please carry ID and contact numbers. It is also important to appreciate that you have a responsibility for the safety of both yourself and fellow walkers.
