Women & Girls Jogalong JULY JOGALONG

With the July Jogalong coinciding with the beginning of the school holidays, numbers were down across the three events compared with previous months.

In the 6 kilometre handicap event, the winner was Wendy Jaensch in 46 mins 00 secs. It was the first time Wendy has been placed in the event after 21 starts stretching back to November 2001. Having come in second in a time of 46 mins 12 secs, Merilyn Bassett was amongst the placings for the third time this year. The handicapper promises to deal with her once and for all this time!! Third place went to Fiona Johnstone in a personal best time of 33 mins 07 secs and it follows her win in the event in February this year.

The fastest time of the day of 24 mins 54 secs was again recorded by Betsy Anderson- Smith.

In the 3 kilometre mixed event, Ben Watson again recorded the fastest time of 11mins 57secs. Nelson Towler was second fastest in 15 mins 54 secs while Lily Apps was third.

In the Minijog, the course was shortened somewhat due to work on the course. Accordingly, the times were a little faster than usual. First across the line and the winner on handicap was Isobel McDonald. Hannah Sowry and Finlay McGurk came second and third respectively.

POINTSCORE COMPETITION

There was little change at the top of the annual pointscore competition table after the July event. Diann Bramwell has maintained her good lead after six very consistent runs. Des Butler has moved into second spot 33 points behind Diann while Lorna Burdon and Lorraine Jansen are equal third, 15 points further back. With the best six runs counting in the competition, there may well be further significant changes in the months ahead. Most likely to move over the next few months are those people who have so far only completed four or five runs.

Despite the coldest conditions for the year, there was still a good turnout across the three events with more than 200 people taking part.

In the 6 kilometre handicap event, the winner was Patricia Lee starting in Group 1. Patricia was competing in her 71st event and it was the first time she had ever been placed. Her time of 58 mins 57 secs was her fastest since September 2003. Second place went to Wendy Jaensch in 44 mins 35 secs, her fastest time for three years, and follows her win last month. Fiona Johnstone came third in a personal best time of 32 mins 9 secs. It was the third time that Fiona has been placed this year following her win in February and third placing in July.

The fastest time of the day of 26 mins 9 secs was recorded by Natalie Archer.

In the 3 kilometre mixed event, Jessica Wallace was first in 15 mins 30 secs. Second place went to Emma Lee in 18 mins 49 secs while James Parrett came in third.

POINTSCORE COMPETITION

With the best six runs counting towards the annual pointscore competition and August being the seventh event of the year, there have been big changes at the top of the competition table. Merilyn Bassett has jumped into the lead after six very consistent events and she has opened up an 18 point lead over Susannah Hiron. Previous leader,

Canberra Runner 50 Diann Bramwell, has slipped back to third, 14 points further back. With four events still to go, there is still time for other people to make a move on the leaders, particularly those who have yet to compete in six events.

POINTSCORE COMPETITION

Merilyn Bassett has maintained her lead at the top of the annual pointscore competition. However, after a very strong run last month, Susannah Hiron has cut Marilyn’s lead to just seven points. Fiona Johnstone has moved into third spot, three points further back.

Congratulations to Janet Perfrement who, after 30 years, has finally completed her 50th event. Janet first competed in February 1979 when she ran her personal best time of 26 mins 34 secs. Janet won the event in November 1982.

OCTOBER JOGALONG 2009

With the October event coinciding with the long weekend and school holidays, numbers were down a little but it was a good opportunity for those who did take part to pick up valuable points in the annual pointscore competition.

The winner of the 6 kilometre handicap event was Jeni James in 45 mins 31 secs. Jeni was competing in her 127th event having first competed in October 1995. Her time was her fastest since March last year and it was her second win in the event, having also won in December 2000. Relative newcomer, Nerida Clarke, was second in a personal best time of 33 mins 32 secs. Third place went to another relative newcomer, Sarah Williams in just her 10th event. Sarah’s time of 34 mins 43 secs was also a personal best.

The fastest time of the day of 25 mins 33 secs was recorded by Natalie Archer.

Canberra Runner 54 In the 3 kilometre mixed event Max Graham recorded the fastest time of 13 mins 14 secs. Hamish McConville and Jaspar Sheehan came in second and third respectively.

Numbers were also down in the Minijog with 20 children taking part. The winner on handicap and first across the line was Adelaide Lalor in 6 mins 14 secs. Callum Burns and Jonty Probyn came in second and third respectively. Thanks to Meredith Boroky for helping out with the Minijog this month. It was much appreciated by all children and their parents.

POINTSCORE COMPETITION

Merilyn Bassett has maintained her lead at the top of the annual pointscore competition. However, after another good run last month run, Susannah Hiron has cut Marilyn’s lead to just five points. Fiona Johnstone remains in third spot, five points further back. With two events remaining, there is still time for someone to come out of the pack but it is starting to look as though these three will be hard to beat.

Congratulations to Linda Miles who became on the second person to complete 200 events in the history of the Jogalong. Linda first competed in 1980 and has been placed on several occasions over that period.

NOVEMBER JOGALONG

While numbers were down a bit in the 6 kilometre handicap event in November, there was a good turn out in the 3 kilometre mixed event and, in particular, the Minijog.

The winner of the 6 kilometre handicap event was long time participant, Eleanor Hensley who was competing in her 86th event, was second in 47 mins 24 secs, her fastest time for more than a year. It was the third time that Eleanor has been placed in the event. Second place went to consistent runner, Helen Larmour, one of the regular backmarkers in the event. It was the first time that Helen has been placed in 55 events. After suffering a serious fall last year it was terrific to see Denise Cardew-Hall amongst the placings. The time of 41 mins 09 secs was her fastest for nearly two years.

The fastest time of the day of 26 mins 15 secs was recorded by Betsy Anderson-Smith.

In the 3 kilometre mixed event Ben Watson recorded the fastest time of 11 mins 48 secs. Max Graham and Jaspar Sheehan came in second and third respectively.

There was an excellent turn out in the Minijog with 43 children taking part. The winner on handicap and first across the line was Oliver Sheehan, closely followed by Oliver

Canberra Runner 56 Fox. Isobel McDonald was placed third with a number of participants ahead of her not being eligible.

POINTSCORE COMPETITION

In order to maintain the excitement in the annual pointscore competition, the table has not been updated to reflect the November results. The top 15 placegetters after the October event are as follows -

She has been a very consistent runner since she began, generally running somewhere in the 5 to 7 minute range for the 1.6 kilometres. We hope she will continue to maintain her enthusiasm for years to come and eventually graduate to the 6 kilometre event.
