INTRODUCTION » In order to establish a radiometric geochronoLogy based on Lower Paleozoic British stratotypes* 41 collections of bentonites and other volcanically derived rocks were collected in five main areas of Ordovician and Silurian outcrops in Wales* England* and Scotland in September 1976. These are the areas studied by Sedgwick* Murchison* and Lapworth in establishing the Lower Paleozoic Systems on which our modern work is based. Although only 12 of the 41 samples collected have been analyzed* they have provided minimum ages for the lower Arenig* lowest L I a n d e i I o * and upper Caradoc Series of the Ordovician System* and for the lower Wenlock* uppermost Wenlock/ and middle Ludlow Series of the Silurian System. -

A Catalogue of Irish Pollen Diagrams
SHORT COMMUNICATION A CATALOGUE OF IRISH POLLEN DIAGRAMS F.J.G. Mitchell, B.S. Stefanini and R. Marchant ABSTRACT The fi rst Irish pollen diagram was published by Gunnar Erdtman in the Irish Naturalists’ Journal in 1927. Since then over 475 pollen diagrams have been produced from locations throughout Ireland from a range of sites and time spans. The data from these pollen diagrams can be used to reconstruct vegetation dynamics over long timescales and so facilitate the investigation of climate change impacts, plant migration and the scale of human-induced landscape change. In this paper we collate the available data from Irish pollen sites into the Irish Pollen Site Database (IPOL) to illustrate their distribution and range. It is intended that this database will be a useful research resource for anyone investigating Irish vegetation history. The database also links to the European and global research agenda surrounding impacts of climate change on ecosystems and associated livelihoods. Nine species of clitambonitoid brachiopods have been described from the Middle and Upper Ordovician of the Oslo Region, Norway. They include, Hemipronites? sp., Clitambonites schmidti, Clinambon anomalus, llmarinia dimorpha, Vellamo oandoensis, Kullervo hibernica, Kullervo aff. parva, Kullervo aff. punctata and Kullarvo cf. lacunata. The palaeobiogeography and palaeoecology of the Upper Ordovician clitambonitoid brachiopods are discussed. The species found in the northem and western parts of the Oslo Region are mostly related to those of the Balti c carbonate platform, despite surprisingly large differences in lithology. The foreland basin (the Oslo-Scania confacies belt of Jaanusson & Bergstrøm, 1980) has a different fauna, dorninated by pandernic species of Kullervo. Thisgenus is supposed to have developed in parallel in Avalonia (pandernic species and the North American species) and Baltica (all endernic species to Baltica), from an early kullervo of either Baltic or Avalonian origin. The rapid spread of the genus in the North Atlantic area is linked -in time - to the large bentonite in the Middle Caradocian. O’Brien Regional Geology Section ABSTRACT In the Loon Pond–Rocky Pond area southeast of Halls Bay, the Ordovician Roberts Arm Group is tectonically attenuat- ed. There, it occurs in the regional hanging-wall sequence of a southeast-directed, folded, imbricate fault system that forms part of the Red Indian Line structural zone. Volcanic rocks assigned to Unit 4 and Unit 6 form the bulk of two, regionally extensive, non-contiguous, fault-bounded lithostratigraphic panels. They may represent different tectonic levels of the original Roberts Arm Group. However, only the northeastern tract (Unit 4) is known to be in direct contact with the Crescent tholeiite belt and, therefore, only it is thought to underlie the younger sedimentary rocks of the Crescent Lake Formation. The tectonomagmatic evolution of the Early Ordovician Hall Hill complex, west of the Mansfield Cove Fault, mostly pre- dates that of the Roberts Arm Group. By comparison, the Early and Middle Ordovician Sops Head Complex records coeval and younger intervals of deposition than those documented in the Roberts Arm Group. Immediately east of the Tommys Arm Fault, the unbroken formations of the Sops Head Complex show a more complex metamorphic and plutonic history than seen in most of the Roberts Arm Group. This suggests that the Hall Hill complex and the Roberts Arm Group adjacent to the Sil- urian Springdale Group had a different orogenic development from the Roberts Arm Group adjacent to the Sops Head Com- plex. -

Proceedings of the Shropshire Geological Society, 1, 2-5. The Ordovician System was named by Lapworth in 1879 from the Ordovices to resolve the problem of the boundary between the Cambrian and Silurian systems which resulted from the controversy between Adam Sedgwick and Roderick Murchison. The primary sub-divisions are as follows: Arenig, Llanvirn, Llandeilo, Caradoc, and Ashgill. There are three main areas of Ordovician rocks in Shropshire: Shelve, Caradoc and Pontesford. Whittard mapped the "Bohemian faunas" using groups of trilobites, include: Ampyx, Cyclopyge, Calymenid trilobites and Trinucleids. Mid Ulster Position Paper – Landscape Assessment September 2015 Prepared by Mid Ulster Environment and Conservation Team. Landscape Assessment of Mid Ulster Council Purpose: To provide members with a Landscape Assessment for Mid Ulster Council to highlight those areas most vulnerable to change within the district. Content: The paper provides information on:- (i) The Northern Ireland Landscape Character Assessment for Mid Ulster District and its key findings; (ii) In addition to identifying the key characteristics of each landscape character area, the report also assesses the principal forces for change and issues influencing landscape condition and sensitivity. (iii) This paper forms part of the Countryside Assessment for Mid Ulster and is to be read in conjunction with Environmental Assets Paper, Strategic Settlement Appraisal Paper and Development Pressure Analysis Paper. Recommendation: That the Planning Committee notes the contents of this paper in relation to our districts diverse landscape character and its interaction with the planning function. 2 1.0 Introduction 1.1 Mid Ulster comprises a diverse mix of landscapes including mountains and moorlands, bog lands, drumlins, lowlands and important river valleys. Recognition of landscapes of national importance is given through the designation of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). A significant part of the Sperrin AONB (designated 2008) lies within the Mid Ulster District. The purpose of the AONB designation is to protect and conserve the scenic qualities of the area and promote their enjoyment. This is supported by two designated Areas of High Scenic Value within Mid Ulster District, namely West Lough Neagh Shores and Slieve Gallion Slopes. 1.2 All of the NI landscape has been classified by the Northern Ireland Landscape Character Assessment 2000 (NILCA 2000), which was compiled by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. -

Summary account of the Lower Ordovician (Arenig) graptolite biostratigraphy of the Cow Head Group, western Newfoundland S. HENRY WILLIAMS AND ROBERT K. STEVENS U Williams, S. H. and Stevens, R. K.: Summary account of the Lower Ordovician (Arenig) graptolite bio stratigraphy of the Cow Head Group, western Newfoundland. Bull. geol. Soc. Denmark, vol. 35, pp. 259- 270, Copenhagen, July 1st, 1987. Cj The Cow Head Group is an allochthonous sequence of Middle Cambrian to late Arenig sedimentary brec cias, limestones and shales deposited in a deep lower slope environment close to a continental margin. Im bricate thrusting has resulted in repeated exposure of laterally equivalent "proximal" to "distal" facies which may be correlated using graptolitic control in the interbeds. "Proximal" sections are characterised by massive, coarse breccias with interbedded limestones and green/dark grey shales. More distal ex posures have fewer and thinner breccias and limestones, while the green/grey shales are replaced pro gressively by red, non-graptolitic ones. Although the succession is by no mean unbroken or complete, it furnishes one of the best and most con tinuously graptolitic sections through the Arenig. A new zonal scheme is erected for the Cow Head Group, which could prove suitable as a new North American standard. Furthermore, several limestones and siliceous shales have yielded exquisitely preserved isolated material, permitting integration of fine growth detail with complete flattened specimens. With the exception of the uppermost Arenig U. austrodentatus Zone, Arenig graptoloids possess a pro- sicular origin for thl1. The earliest graptoloids with a metasicular origin for the first theca appear in this zone, including Undulograptus, Cryptograptus and Paraglossograptus.
