DearDea Friends in Christ,

As wwe eagerly await the arrival of our new Pastor, Fr. Vaughn Winters, and our new AssociateAsso Pastor, Fr. Jihoon Kim, we are overwhelmed with joyful ancipaon!

We are coming out of the Covid-19 restricons and are geng more and more back to “nonormal” every day.

I have reached the CanonicalCan rerement age for Deacons, and Archbishop Gomez has granted me permission to rere from Acve Ministry. Along with my rerement, he has also granted me connuing Facules to perform normal Diaconal dues during my rerement years. This means that I will have the ability to Bapze, serve at Mass and assist at Saint Kateri Parish whenever possible.

I am grateful for the many blessings I have received during my years of ministry, especially here at Saint Kateri Catholic Parish. My largest debt of gratude goes to my beloved wife, Pon, for her connued support, love and encouragement through these many years. Without her support, I would never have returned as Administrator Pro Tempore for the second me.

I also want to thank Bishop Alex Aclan, our Regional Bishop, for his belief and trust in assigning me once again to Saint Kateri Parish. He has been a source of unending support and encouragement during this me.

I would also like to thank Fr. Deus Najja for his dedicaon to the people of Saint Kateri. We send him on his way with the gratude of Saint Kateri Parish, and wish him well in his future ministries.

The wonderful staff of Saint Kateri has been unbelievably supporve to me during the past seven months. They know how much I love them and appreciate their dedicaon and resolve. Their jobs are not always easy, and managing the day-to-day challenges of parish life can be daunng at mes, but they have all been courageous and loving each and every day. Thank you Staff!

Our army of Volunteers has connued their undying support of our ministries. Without our dedicated Volunteers, our ministries would be unable to funcon. They are generous, devoted, and commied to Saint Kateri. There are literally hundreds of Volunteers, who work mostly in the background, but their efforts never go unnoced. Our Volunteers are the glue that held our parish together during the difficult me of the Covid-19 pandemic. I wish that I could properly express my appreciaon for all that our Volunteers accomplish each day. Thank you, Volunteers!

Lastly, I want to thank you, the Parishioners of Saint Kateri Parish, for your love, support and trust during these tumultuous months. Together we trusted in God’s love, believed that the Holy Spirit was truly guiding us, and baled through a very difficult me. We did this together! Thank you!

I thank God for all of you and pray for you every day. You have enriched my life and made me realize why I became a Deacon. Each and every one of you is God’s blessing to me!

Your Brother in Christ’s Love Deacon Bob Seidler Administrator Pro Tempore

FAITH FORMATION

Did you know that our dear Father Deus is a missionary priest? His bishop in Uganda asked him to serve in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles because the Lord knew that as American’s living in a secular, o en God-denying culture, we are always in need Holy men of God in our lives, serving as our spiritual shepherds. We at Saint Kateri have been blessed to have Fr. Deus caring for our souls as his first missionary assignment. Now his servant’s heart takes him to Saint Anthony’s, in Oxnard. He will be very much missed by his Saint Kateri Parish family.

Each of us who have come to know Fr. Deus have our own stories of how he has in some way touched our lives and helped us to grow in our faith. I invite you to let him know of the difference he has made in your life by wring him a note of thanks. On those days in his life as a missionary priest, when he might be wondering if he is making a difference, re-reading your short message could very well be just the reassurance God gives Fr. Deus to say, “Well done, Good and Faithful Servant.” Mahew 25:23

Kindly drop off your cards and notes at the parish office during the week, or you can bring them to Mass on June 26 or June 27, when we will be saying our goodbye’s to Father, on the Plaza a er each Liturgy.

Mark 5:21-43 (shorter form, Mark 5:21-24,35b-43) Jesus heals a woman afflicted with a hemorrhage and raises Jairus’s daughter from death With Faith, We Approach Jesus in Prayer for Our Needs and the Needs of Others

There are many ways in which we can compare the request for healing made by Jairus and the request of the woman with the hemorrhage. One comparison helps us think about prayer. Jairus asked Jesus for healing on his daughter’s behalf; the woman with the hemorrhage had no one to speak for her and bravely approached Jesus on her own iniave. In our prayers, we do both. We intercede for others’ needs, and we also courageously express our own needs to God. We find hope in Jesus’ response to both people, who sought him out in their hour of need. As you gather as a family, talk about some of the things you have prayed for this week. YOUTH MINISTRY

Life Teen message from Kelly Dunnahoo

In today’s Gospel reading we hear about Jesus healing a sick woman and raising a girl from the dead. There are a lot of stories in the Gospels about Jesus sharing His healing powers. But why did these people have to suffer in the first place? Why can’t everyone have a nice, long, and healthy life? In short, why do bad things happen to good people? We are given the beginning of an answer in the First Reading from the Book of Wisdom:

“God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destrucon of the living.”

Skipping to the end:

“For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him. But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who belong to his company experience it.”

We all were given an intellect and will – to choose to do good or to do wrong; to act in a holy manner or to sin. Sure enough, the choosing to sin part didn’t make it past our first parents, and Eve. Once they turned from God, sin and death entered the world. Since that me, we all have had an inclinaon to sin and we need God’s grace to overcome this and to choose Him. We pray, we learn the difference between good and bad, we have good role models, we frequent the Sacraments.

But not everyone does this, and none of us does this all the me. We sin. And our sins can negavely affect others. While everything that God has created is good, we somemes use those good things in a bad way – maybe we use it for an evil purpose and it hurts ourselves or others. In addion, our passions and emoons are good when used properly. But somemes we allow anger to turn into hatred. We become jealous. We become envious. Somemes we act out on these emoons and hurt others. In other words, the free choices of some can cause bad things to happen to good people.

This Reading from Wisdom also helps us to understand why people suffer and die, somemes way too young. When our first parents sinned, an ordered world became disordered and “death entered the world” and all experience it. Remember though, God can take the bad and turn it to good. In the beginning of the Vigil Mass, we hear about how because of Adam’s sin, we were given a Redeemer – Jesus, and because of His Sacrifice, we could become higher than the angels – true sons and daughters of God. Let us always keep our eyes on Jesus, pray for each other, and spread the Good News of Christ even when (or especially when) bad things happen to good people!

Life Teen is a community for teenagers where we help each other, through support and prayer, to be intenonal disciples and lead others to Christ. Unfortunately, we are not able to meet weekly during the pandemic, but we will be meeng on the Plaza on the second Saturday of each month unl further noce. Our next meeng is July 10. See you then!

REGISTRATION! For Level 1 and Level 2 Confirmaon will begin in July! Dates to follow! Thank you for your paence and prayers!

13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | 11

Welcome Father Vaughn Winters An Introducon to Our New Pastor

Dear Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Parish Family:

I was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on June 5, 1993. I was born in Riverside, California, and spent my childhood and youth throughout Southern California in San Clemente, Ridgecrest, and Port Hueneme, graduang from Hueneme High School in 1985. In 1981 and 1982, I also lived in northern Utah. Following graduaon, I aended St. John's Seminary in Camarillo. During the seminary years, I assisted in different capacies at St. in Camarillo, St. in Simi Valley, St. Paul in Los Angeles, St Joseph in Hawthorne, and Our Lady of Grace in Encino. I have served in two parishes as Associate Pastor, at St. Church in Santa Barbara (Goleta) 1993-97 and St. Charles Borromeo Church in North Hollywood 1997-02. In 2002, I was called to serve as pastor in the northernmost parish of the Archdiocese, St. John Neumann Church in Santa Maria. This allowed me to look a er my grandmother, Lauree, who lived nearby in Pismo Beach. She was able to enjoy becoming a part of parish life there. A er seven years, I was unexpectedly called to serve as pastor of Saint Mary's in Palmdale in 2009 and am now leaving, a er my maximum stay of two, six-year terms.

I replaced as pastor, Msgr. Stephen Downes, who had served as my first pastor, while a newly ordained priest. St. Mary's is a very complex parish of over 10,000 families, with 14 Sunday Masses celebrated in four locaons: Palmdale, Acton, Lilerock, and Lake Los Angeles. Each locaon has its own parish council and their own set of issues and challenges. Since you are our community just to the south, I have some familiarity with Santa Clarita and am good friends with Father Olin at St. Clare, and Msgr. Craig at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Years ago, when Father Bahhuth was Pastor, I was invited to celebrate a couple of Sunday Masses for you.

Last November, I received a list of available parishes to apply to and Saint Kateri was not on that list, so it was a surprise when back in March, I was called and asked to become Pastor of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha’s Faith Community. It was a brief phone call, and I was happy to say “Yes!” In the recent three parishes I have served as pastor, I did not choose them, they were chosen for me, and so far, the Holy Spirit has been right on target! As our society and Church emerges from this difficult, past fourteen months, it will be an excing me to make a new beginning! I look forward to seling in and geng to know you, as we put back our Masses and various groups, ministries, programs, events and acvies. We are also very blessed to be receiving as our new Associate Pastor, Father Jihoon Kim, who was ordained a priest on June 5th. Jihoon was my seminarian intern two years ago, and we had a great ten months together. Thus, you are geng a ready-made team. I'm honored to be receiving my third, newly ordained priest, and together we can mentor him and introduce him to the wonderful calling of the priesthood.

I also want to thank Fr. Deus for all he has done this past year ministering to you in these challenging circumstances. He will be going forth to serve at St. Anthony's Parish in Oxnard, along with Fr. Joshua Diener, my former associate who le Saint Mary's just a year ago. We can clearly see in all of these connecons, the Goodness of God and how He cares for us with his Healing Providence; we just have to persevere with opmism, hope, and trust!

God bless you, and I will see you in a few weeks! In the love of Christ, Father Vaughn
