Vaughn Winters, and our new AssociateAsso Pastor, Fr. Jihoon Kim, we are overwhelmed with joyful ancipaon! We are coming out of the Covid-19 restricons and are geng more and more back to “normalno ” every day. I have reached the CanonicalCan rerement age for Deacons, and Archbishop Gomez has granted me permission to rere from Acve Ministry. Along with my rerement, he has also granted me connuing Facules to perform normal Diaconal dues during my rerement years. This means that I will have the ability to Bapze, serve at Mass and assist at Saint Kateri Parish whenever possible. I am grateful for the many blessings I have received during my years of ministry, especially here at Saint Kateri Catholic Parish. My largest debt of gratude goes to my beloved wife, Pon, for her connued support, love and encouragement through these many years. Without her support, I would never have returned as Administrator Pro Tempore for the second me. I also want to thank Bishop Alex Aclan, our Regional Bishop, for his belief and trust in assigning me once again to Saint Kateri Parish. He has been a source of unending support and encouragement during this me. I would also like to thank Fr. Deus Najja for his dedicaon to the people of Saint Kateri. We send him on his way with the gratude of Saint Kateri Parish, and wish him well in his future ministries. The wonderful staff of Saint Kateri has been unbelievably supporve to me during the past seven months. They know how much I love them and appreciate their dedicaon and resolve. Their jobs are not always easy, and managing the day-to-day challenges of parish life can be daunng at mes, but they have all been courageous and loving each and every day. Thank you Staff! Our army of Volunteers has connued their undying support of our ministries. Without our dedicated Volunteers, our ministries would be unable to funcon. They are generous, devoted, and commied to Saint Kateri. There are literally hundreds of Volunteers, who work mostly in the background, but their efforts never go unnoced. Our Volunteers are the glue that held our parish together during the difficult me of the Covid-19 pandemic. I wish that I could properly express my appreciaon for all that our Volunteers accomplish each day. Thank you, Volunteers! Lastly, I want to thank you, the Parishioners of Saint Kateri Parish, for your love, support and trust during these tumultuous months. Together we trusted in God’s love, believed that the Holy Spirit was truly guiding us, and baled through a very difficult me. We did this together! Thank you! I thank God for all of you and pray for you every day. You have enriched my life and made me realize why I became a Deacon. Each and every one of you is God’s blessing to me!     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

When Jesus answers the apostles' question about why he speaks in parables, it may seem as if He is using them to confuse people. We know He is trying to spread the Good News of God's kingdom. So He talks to the crowds in parables, easily understood stories that usually have a moral or that end with a question for the hearers. He uses these stories to teach the crowd. Jesus threw out parables like a farmer sowing seeds. Some of them fell on the ears of those who would be disciples. But most fell on the ears of people not ready to understand. So how do we receive His Word? Do we hear it without understan - ding, letting it go in one ear and out the other? Do we hear it joyfully, but then forget it when troubles or difficulties come along? Do we listen to the word but ignore it in the face of some later temptation? If we want the word to grow strong in us, we can take steps to help ourselves understand it. We can come to Church early and spend a few minutes with the readings before Mass. After Mass we can talk about the readings or the homily with our family over breakfast.

    Saint Kateri Tekakwitha (Kuh-TARE-ee Tek-a-QUEETH-a) Keep this story for the next 3 weeks to complete the activities in this fun pack! Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 in Ossernenon (today Auriesville, New York). Her father was a Mohawk Chief. Her parents died from smallpox, and Kateri herself caught smallpox but survived. The smallpox left her almost blind and with scars all over her face. She was raised by her aunt and uncle after her parents passed away. When she was 10 years old, Kateri’s village was visited by missionaries who introduced her to Christianity. Kateri was baptized when she was 20 years old. Some of Mohawks in her village opposed her conversion, so she left her tribe and went to St. Francis Xavior Mission, a Christian Mohawk village in Kahnawake, Quebec. A year after her baptism, Kateri received her First Communion on Christmas Day in 1677. She spent her life in prayer, teaching children, and caring for the elderly and sick. She was also known for living a life of chastity. On April 17, 1680, just before her 24th birthday, Kateri died from tuberculosis and was buried at St. Francis Xavier Mission. Her last words were: “Jesos Konoronkwa” (Jesus I love you). Right after her death, it is said that Kateri’s smallpox scars disappeared from her face and she radiated with beauty. Kateri Tekakwitha was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 22, 1980 and canonized as a saint on October 21, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. Her Feast day is July 14.
