It is largely the fruit of many pleasant hours of botanising by the author and a few others and as such reflects their particular interests. History of Plant Recording Peeblesshire is thinly populated and has had few resident botanists to record its flora. Also its upland terrain held little in the way of dramatic features or geology to attract outside botanists. Consequently the first list of the county’s flora with any pretension to completeness only became available in 1925 with the publication of the History of Peeblesshire (Eds, JW Buchan and H Paton). For this FRS Balfour and AB Jackson provided a chapter on the county’s flora which included a list of all the species known to occur. The first records were made by Dr A Pennecuik in 1715. He gave localities for 30 species and listed 8 others, most of which are still to be found. Thereafter for some 140 years the only evidence of interest is a few specimens in the national herbaria and scattered records in Lightfoot (1778), Watson (1837) and The New Statistical Account (1834-45).

  • Parishes and Congregations: Names No Longer in Use
S E C T I O N 9 A Parishes and Congregations: names no longer in use The following list updates and corrects the ‘Index of Discontinued Parish and Congregational Names’ in the previous online section of the Year Book. As before, it lists the parishes of the Church of Scotland and the congregations of the United Presbyterian Church (and its constituent denominations), the Free Church (1843–1900) and the United Free Church (1900–29) whose names have completely disappeared, largely as a consequence of union. This list is not intended to be ‘a comprehensive guide to readjustment in the Church of Scotland’. Its purpose is to assist those who are trying to identify the present-day successor of a former parish or congregation whose name is now wholly out of use and which can therefore no longer be easily traced. Where the former name has not disappeared completely, and the whereabouts of the former parish or congregation may therefore be easily established by reference to the name of some existing parish, the former name has not been included in this list. Present-day names, in the right-hand column of this list, may be found in the ‘Index of Parishes and Places’ near the end of the book. The following examples will illustrate some of the criteria used to determine whether a name should be included or not: • Where all the former congregations in a town have been united into one, as in the case of Melrose or Selkirk, the names of these former congregations have not been included; but in the case of towns with more than one congregation, such as Galashiels or Hawick, the names of the various constituent congregations are listed.

As anxious for the well-being of my native country as I am conscious of its shortcomings, I listened to the youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman’s poem The hill we climb, delivered in the movements of her hands and the pacing of her words: For while we have our eyes on the future history has its eyes on us. This is the era of just redemption. We feared at its inception, we did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour but within it we found the power to author a new chapter to offer hope and laughter to ourselves. So while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe? now we assert how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us? We will not march back to what was but move to what shall be … When day comes we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid.

Summary This paper takes a brief look at the history of Peeblesshire workhouse, its internal and external appearance and some of the people involved in it. This includes Its architect, its manager and his family, and its inmates. It touches on other contemporary institutions and prompts reflections about how the state deals with people needing help. The paper is based on a visit to the heritage hub in Hawick. At Hawick I examined the original records of about 280 inmates and looked at the census records for 1861 and 1881. I have copies to show you later. I didn’t look at the children’s register or the minutes, which were unavailable at the time of my visit. I also consulted a number of reputable Internet sites, referenced below. 2. How long did it operate? The Peebles Combination was formed in around 1856. It comprised the parishes of: Drumelzier, Eddlestone, Kirkurd, West Linton, Lyne and Meggat, Manor, Newlands, Peebles, Skirling, Stobo, and Tweedsmuir. Also Biggar, Inverleithen, Penicuik, and Traquair. The building itself was erected in 1857-8 on Rosetta Road, where the council offices now stand. During the First World War, the poorhouse was placed at the disposal of the military authorities. In 1919, due to the small numbers using it, the Peebles Combination ended. In 1921, the poorhouse site, in Rosetta road, was sold to the Peeblesshire County Education Authority. It was demolished in the early 1930s and replaced by the council offices we see today. Very little remains of the poorhouse building, and none of it visible from outside.
