    Třebíč – Uniqueness of Multiplicity CZECH TELEVISION PRESENTS A DOCUMENTARY SERIES Most of its foreign visitors head straight for the oldest part of the town, called Podklášteří (“Bellow the Monastery”) or the old Jewish quarter in the district of Zámostí (“Beyond the Bridge”). At one time Třebíč belonged to major centres of both Christian and Jewish culture in Moravia, and even today it still gives testimony about the coexistence of Jews and Christians. (Národní klenoty – památky UNESCO) The Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc – Fullness of Faith The monumental column is 35 metres tall, was erected in the 18th century, and is a supreme example of architecture characterised as Olomouc Baroque. It is decorated with a multitude of Baroque statues which form the largest sculptural group in Central Europe. It owes its existence to mason and architect Wenzel Render, who was the first to come with the idea to create it, and outstanding sculptor Ondřej Zahner. Villa Tugendhat – Onyx Heart Villa Tugendhat in Brno was the last great project designed by architect Ludwig Miese van der Rohe in Europe before he moved to the USA. It is a unique specimen of functionalist architecture from the period between the two world wars. It has three storeys and is situated on sloped terrain. The structure consists of a steel skeleton carrying ceramic ceilings. Villa Tugendhat, re-opened to the public in 2011 following a demanding renovation, is admired by visitors from all over the world. Each country tries to choose representative sites and monuments that document the structural and architectural development in a given region. Therefore, the Czech Republic carried out an analysis of their monuments. As the Czech Republic has a very rich and expressive history in the very centre of Europe, its history has significantly affected its civil engineering and architecture. It is also a country with a varied geological structure and geomorphology. Today’s untraditional forms of tourism, among which we also find geotourism, may thus build on such knowledge and expand the current offer of destinations. Learning about the geological structure is also important in terms of future renovation and reconstruction work. The current list of UNESCO cultural sites will be expanded by further unique sites and buildings. Vzhledem k mimořádnému významu stavby, která je stěžejním evrop- ským dílem architekta Ludwiga Miese van der Rohe z let 1928 –1930 a řadí se k nejvýznamnějším vilovým realizacím světové architektury 20. století, byl SHP zpracován jako nadstandardní. Goad The Pennsylvania State University [email protected] Mahyar Hadighi The Pennsylvania State University [email protected] ABSTRACT When Philip Johnson completed the Glass House in New Canaan in 1949 and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe the Farnsworth House in Plano in 1951, the debate on how much transparency can be afforded in residential facades was at its peak. While for some enthusiasts the glass envelope renewed the Americans’ ideal of living closely with nature, a majority of critics concluded that facades of residences should not consist entirely of glass for reasons of thermal comfort and privacy. One and a half decades later, two seminal writings on the topic of transparency were published: Colin Rowe and Robert Slutzky’s "Transparency, Literal and Phenomenal" in Perspecta 1963 and Reyner Banham and Francois Dallegret’s "A Home is not a House" in Art in America 1965. It is within this timeframe that the architect Abraham William Hajjar (1917–2000) presented design proposals to include double skin facades in residential buildings. The designs ranged from Miesian-minimalist approaches to more technical investigations comparable to Keck & Keck’s and Buckminster Fuller’s works. Hajjar also experimented with a double skin, modest in size, in his own house in State College, PA.

Mies, like many of his post World War I contemporaries, sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created an influential 20th century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces. He strived towards an architecture with a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space. He called his buildings "skin and bones" architecture. He sought a rational approach that would guide the creative process of architectural design. He is often associated with the aphorisms "less is more" and "God is in the details".

Mies van der Rohe devoted the same amount of attention to the furnishings of the Vhouse as to its design. The furniture designed and placed according to his conception is such an important aspect of the house that without it the Villa is only half complete. The system govern- ing the organization of all parts of the building–ratios, proportions, whole areas and details–is visible also in the precise placement of the house contents, which only allowed the owner limited variability in the use of space. The Villa became world famous not long after its completion, but Fritz and Grete Tugendhat were not destined to spend many happy years there. Even before the Munich Pact had been signed, sig- nifying the de facto end of democratic Czechoslovakia, they left Brno forever. At the end of the summer of 1938 two removal vans came to take part of the furnishings to St. Gal- len in Switzerland. Today the main body of the original equipment is, except for several pieces, still in the possession of the family. The Villa was, after two years of general reconstruction, reopened to the public in February this year. For the first time since 1938 it was equipped with all the furnishings Mies van der Rohe had designed for it. The most significant event was the return after seventy years of the original curved wall of the dining area to its original location.
