If we read Marx’s theory of Alienation, roughly, as having three parts: 1) objectification of the subject, 2) development of the subject once objectified, and 3) the return of the objectified subject to a ‘higher level’ of subjectivity, then my readings of Borkenau, Sohn-Rethel, and Axelos each correspond to an aspect of the theory of alienation. Franz Borkenau, read together with Walter Benjamin, corresponds to the first stage of alienation. Alfred Sohn-Rethel’s discussion of the social role of the ‘exchange relation’ corresponds to the second stage of the theory of alienation. Finally, Kōstas Axelos’ emphasis on technology as the motor of history is one attempt to supplement the theory of alienation with phenomenology. My reading of Axelos corresponds to the third stage of alienation theory. Introduction: Plot and Setting Despite the fact that ‘alienation’ is of central theoretical importance in Karl Marx’s work, the concept does not occupy an analytically central position in the body of writing published during his lifetime. Indeed, “‘Alienation’ or ‘estrangement’ [Entfremdung, Entäußerung, Veräußerung] was not a featured concept in Marxism, or in scholarship on Marx, before 1932,”1 when key texts from Marx’s youth became available in the West. This is not to say that the concept was Marx’s invention. Prior to the 1932 publication of Marx’s early philosophical writings the term alienation was in use, but its meaning had “changed several times over the centuries. In theological discourse it referred to the distance between man and God; in social contract theories, to loss of the individual’s original liberty; and in English political economy, to the transfer of property ownership.”2 It was in the work of G.W.F. Hegel that the concept of alienation attained its current philosophic status as a properly epistemological concept3 and, thus took the form that would enable it to play a structuring role in Marx’s thought and analysis.     THE KPD AND THE NSDAP: A STTJDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLITICAL EXTREMES IN WEIMAR GERMANY, 1923-1933 BY DAVIS WILLIAM DAYCOCK A thesis submitted for the degree of Ph.D. The London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London 1980 1 ABSTRACT The German Communist Party's response to the rise of the Nazis was conditioned by its complicated political environment which included the influence of Soviet foreign policy requirements, the party's Marxist-Leninist outlook, its organizational structure and the democratic society of Weimar. Relying on the Communist press and theoretical journals, documentary collections drawn from several German archives, as well as interview material, and Nazi, Communist opposition and Social Democratic sources, this study traces the development of the KPD's tactical orientation towards the Nazis for the period 1923-1933. In so doing it complements the existing literature both by its extension of the chronological scope of enquiry and by its attention to the tactical requirements of the relationship as viewed from the perspective of the KPD.     Totalitarianism 1 Totalitarianism Totalitarianism (or totalitarian rule) is a political system where the state holds total authority over the society and seeks to control all aspects of public and private life wherever necessary.[1] The concept of totalitarianism was first developed in a positive sense in the 1920's by the Italian fascists. The concept became prominent in Western anti-communist political discourse during the Cold War era in order to highlight perceived similarities between Nazi Germany and other fascist regimes on the one hand, and Soviet communism on the other.[2][3][4][5][6] Aside from fascist and Stalinist movements, there have been other movements that are totalitarian. The leader of the historic Spanish reactionary conservative movement called the Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right declared his intention to "give Spain a true unity, a new spirit, a totalitarian polity..." and went on to say "Democracy is not an end but a means to the conquest of the new state. He used the term “totalitario” to refer to the structure and goals of the new state.

    Dominik Geppert Intellektuelle und Antikommunismus Der Kongress für Kulturelle Freiheit und die Gruppe 47 Wenn man Intellektuelle für allein der Rationalität verpflichtete Sachwalter des Allge- meinwohls hält und Antikommunismus mit einem geistig anspruchslosen, ideologi- schen Appell an Ängste und Emotionen identifiziert, dann bilden die beiden Begriffe ‚Intellektuelle‘ und ‚Antikommunismus‘ ein Gegensatzpaar. Eine solche Sichtweise ist zwar nicht ungewöhnlich, wäre aber einem allzu positiv aufgeladenen, normativen Intellektuellenbegriff verhaftet. Gleichzeitig verstünde sie antikommunistische Ideo- logie schlichtweg als falsches Bewusstsein, was bei der geschichtswissenschaftlichen Erforschung des Phänomens kaum weiter führt. Denn in der historischen Realität Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts waren Intellektuelle und Antikommunismus keineswegs Gegensätze. Vielmehr übte der Antikommunismus eine Zeitlang erhebliche Anzie- hungskraft und Faszination auf Intellektuelle aus – und zwar nicht nur auf rechte oder konservative Intellektuelle, sondern auch auf solche, die sich selbst als Liberale, Linke oder gar als Sozialisten bezeichneten1. Das wohl bekannteste Beispiel für einen Antikommunismus linksliberaler Intellek- tueller aus der Frühphase des Kalten Krieges ist der Kongress für kulturelle Freiheit, ‚Congress for Cultural Freedom‘ (CCF). Er hatte erstmals ein Jahr nach dem Ende der Luftbrücke im geteilten Berlin getagt und war von einem international zusammen- gesetzten Komitee veranstaltet worden, das hauptsächlich mit antikommunistisch gesinnten Intellektuellen aus Westeuropa und den Vereinigten Staaten bestückt war. Darunter befanden sich so illustre Namen wie Arthur Koestler, Manès Sperber, Igna- zio Silone und Raymond Aron. Aus Amerika kamen unter anderem der Philosoph Sidney Hook, der Publizist James Burnham und der Historiker Arthur M. Schlesinger jun. By analyzing first, the establishment and framework of the Comintern’s understanding and use of imperialism as a political and instrumental tool, the aim of the article is to look beyond the official and sanctioned policy of the Comintern on imperialism between the wars. In doing so, the author examines and discuss internal discussions as they evolved over time at Comintern headquarters in Moscow by analyzing documents filed in the Comintern Archive (RGASPI) in Moscow. Key concepts focus on the Leninist perception of imperialism; the periodization debate, and contextual explanations linked to the frequent policy shifts of the Comintern and its relation to Bolshevization and Stalinization. In conclusion, the article highlights the historical trajectory of imperialism and anti- imperialism as a constituent source of Bolshevik policy making in its interpretation of global society. As national oppression is inseparable from imperialism as such, it can only be finally abolished by a joint and consistent anti-imperialist struggle of the masses of the people in oppressed nations, carried on hand in hand with the international revolutionary proletariat, by uniting the forces of the toilers of all nations for the overthrow of imperialism and the capitalist system.
