Wednesday Afternoon at the Movies March 18th, 12:30 - 2:30 PM Saint John Paul II Room Hosted by Fr. Vin Ritchie Feature this week: Romero Our Lenten fi lm series continues this week with the 1989 fi lm about the recently declared martyr, Oscar Romero, entitled simply Romero. “One of the great strengths of this fi lm about the martyred archbishop of San Salvador is its depiction of a conversion. Archbishop Oscar Romero moves from being a bishop willing to kowtow to the wealthy to a man converted by the death of friends, the plight of the poor and his reappropriation of the Gospel into a prophet for the oppressed. Raul Julia invests the archbishop of San Salvador with a fi erce love for the people of his archdiocese that manifests itself in his work for social justice. Th e actor said that he underwent a conversion himself while making the fi lm, an experience that informs his performance. Th e scene where Romero wrestles with God half aloud, half silently is one of the more realistic portrayals of prayer ever committed to fi lm.” (commentary from Saints on the Screen by James Martin, SJ, October 30, 2006 issue of America Magazine). Refreshments will be served. Th e stated run time of this fi lm is one hour forty-four minutes. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: “Peace be with you!” With these words, the Risen Lord greeted his frightened Apostles in the Upper Room on the day of his Resurrection. They were troubled, anxious, and fearful—much like each one of us at some point in our lives. Christ repeated the words, “Peace be with you.” But then he added, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (Jn 20:19-23). What an extraordinary gift! The Risen Lord was proclaiming that all the suffering he had just endured was in order to make available the gifts of salvation “He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me and forgiveness. 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others

“No vocation is born of itself or lives for itself. A vocation flows from the heart of God and blossoms in the good soil of faithful people” -Pope Francis

Answering the Call to Serve Father James Shelton, ordained in June of 2014, remembers the day he entered the Seminary.

“From the first moment that I walked into the Seminary, I knew immediately that being a priest was what I wanted to do; I knew I was going to be happy and joyful serving God’s people.”

The Catholic Ministries Appeal helps seminarians devote themselves fully to their studies as they prepare to serve as our priests. Today, serving as an Associate Pastor at Good Shepherd in Holbrook, Fr. Shelton hopes to reach out to others so they can “experience the joy and peace that the Lord provides.”

Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone’s life. Thank you!
