The Forum Committee Presents: Florence Wharton The Struggle for Women's Rights to Equality: Stanton, Steinem and the ERA Tuesday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. and Channel 970

Florence Wharton has lived in Langhorne and the Bucks County area for many years. Interested in history, she is the author of “Langhorne: Crossroads of History”, (copy in our library) and spoke here at Pennswood in 2018. She has often spoken recently on American Women and the evolution of women's rights. In addition, she works for the Heritage Commission, and the Planning Commission to identify ways to save open space. Her talk will focus on the 72-year struggle for the ERA and beyond, to understand the depth and diversity of the women's suffrage movement. What was the role of the 1913 March in Washington, D.C.? What women from minority groups across the country worked so diligently? Who from Bucks County were 'change agents'? Why is a document formed in 1923 to permanently guarantee equal rights for all Americans still unfinished business? Listen to Wharton's talk on Tuesday, March 16, to learn some of the answers. There will be an opportunity for questions. Join via Zoom to be able to participate in the live Q & A or view on Channel 970. Zoom meeting ID: 867 8035 8689 Passcode: 157108

LAST CALL FOR ART SHOW YOUR WORK AT THE RESIDENT ART GALLERY The theme of the next show is baffling: “Bird, Bath and Beyond,” but it can also be inspiring. Whether you focus on the bird, the bath or the beyond, do bring your work to the Resident Art Gallery on Thursday, April 1 (no April Fool) between 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Committee is looking for easel art in many media, clay work (nothing utilitarian, please), photographs, and art quilting. Two items per artist. Nothing exhibited during the past two years. Please bring a title for the piece and a rough estimate of its insurance value. Please bring ONLY work that you made yourself (your finger on the shutter, your hand holding the brush, the needle or the clay). Please make sure your work is sturdy enough to either hang on the wall or arrange on pedestals. Committee members at the door of the gallery will be checking this. We don’t want your work to disintegrate during the show and nor, we suspect, do you. The show will open on Sunday, April 4.

Restoring Civility Across the Political Divide Karen Tibbals recent program and her book, Persuade, Don’t Preach, touched a chord with many of us who long to have productive conversations with people who don’t agree with us. Richard Rohr’s comment about this book is, “This book is a helpful guide to how to understand people in such a way that you can talk to them more productively.” Based on the latest social science research, this is a practical plan to talk with others in a respectful way—a way that enables people to get past their differences. This book explains why people differ and why particular groups of people focus on certain issues. This knowledge fosters empathy and helps us approach people we disagree with in a way that restores civility. This book is now in the Pennswood library.

You don’t need to have a story in mind to join Travel Tables. • If appreciating other people’s stories joggles a travel story in your mind, so much the better. You can share it if you wish.

Pennswood Art Gallery Exhibition by James C. Bongartz Sunday, March 21 through Sunday, May 9

We are fortunate that James Bongartz has agreed to fill in for a cancellation and we will be able to enjoy looking at more of his lively paintings. The March to March, A Year in Color exhibition will open on Sunday, March 21 and run through Sunday, May 9.

During this year of Covid-19, Jim has been hard at work creating the new paintings. Once again we will accompany this artist as he makes his way through cities, taking snap shots of places and people. He captures all that activity and then, back in his studio, turns it into intensely bright acrylic paintings. His brush work adds to the expression of the activity and feelings of immediacy. Jim said in a recent email, “All of these works reflect the continuation of my painting journey, referencing my photography while exploring the use of fluorescent paint.”

He further states, “Viewing these paintings ‘completely’ can only be done in person since fluorescence cannot be fully reproduced using photography or videography. While photographs of fluorescent paint colors will indicate a heightened sense of color, they will not fully capture the true vibrancy created by the wavelengths discharged from the lit fluorescent pigment…….Replacing traditional color palettes, the use of these rogue fluorescent pigments allows for further expansion and reinterpretation of a sense of time and place. This color palette can offer a unique role for the viewer, a heightened visual sensation………”

A native of Pittsburgh, Bongartz earned a science degree in art education at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. After moving to the Philadelphia area in 1989, he began a 22-year career as a full time art teacher for a private, special education, K-12 school in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. While teaching, he kept a working studio in pursuit of his painting career.

Bongartz is the Director of Education for Artists of Yardley, (AOY) coordinating adult and youth classes and workshops. He teaches painting classes there and youth summer classes. Several Pennswood residents have studied with Jim, and report that he loves color. One student describes it as, “neon color”.

The Quakerism Committee Presents:

A musical event - My Daughter’s Words (composed by resident Lolly Barton)

Tuesday, March 23, 7:00 p.m. Channel 970 AND via Zoom for a live Q & A afterwards Zoom ID: 833 3154 5048 Passcode: 272024

Who among us has not had a challenging relationship with a sibling, a parent, a child? What do we do with all our feelings? Musician and Pennswood resident Lolly Barton channeled her journey into a work of art—My Daughter’s Words: A Musical Dialog Between a Mother and Child. This piece has been performed several times in Princeton venues with a narrator, live singers, and a jazz ensemble, thanks to a generous grant from the J. Seward Johnson, Sr. Charitable Trust. Born in Savannah, Georgia, Lolly began piano lessons at age five. “I always had an ear for music,” she says, adding somewhat ruefully that “my ear got in my way.” She never really learned to sight-read music despite many attempts in courses and graduate work in music therapy at NYU as well as the jazz program at the Miami School of Music at Miami U. For many years, Lolly arranged works for Jersey Transit, an acappella group with whom she performed. Five of her arrangements appeared on the group’s CD “Bumpy Road to Love.” While also running a small interior plant-scaping business in Pennington, Lolly studied jazz piano and composition on-and-off for many years with Laurie Altman, a faculty member at the Westminster Conservatory. The poetry was written by Lolly’s daughter, Jennifer Parkhurst (now in her 60’s) when Jennifer was in ninth grade. Jennifer developed an eating disorder and became terminally ill. Working together with Mr. Altman and her daughter, the composition emerged—and Jennifer survived. My Daughter’s Words has elements of blues, basso nova, and gospel music. It includes a lullaby and a hymn. It progresses from the opening chorus (“I’m terribly tired/I want to sleep, a long-time sleep. I don’t really mean to die/not today.”) to a song for chorus, ensemble and a soloist entitled “Yellow Is Hope.” The final chorus is a thumping gospel affirmation called, “The Sun Has Risen to Shine Again.” Additional parts of the libretto were written by others. Well known here at Pennswood for her performances in Woolman with her quartet, Lolly plays the harmonica, banjo, ukulele, guitar and acoustic bass. She also sings and taught music to children. We welcome the opportunity to see this 20-minute performance of My Daughter’s Words followed by a Q & A with Lolly. Like an opera, it’s helpful to have the libretto to follow along. Copies of the libretto will be available at the external mail boxes the day before the performance.

Meet John Syvarth and Gladys Cerrina, K-206 John and Gladys met about thirty years ago at a Christmas party where they were invited as leaders of canoe trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club. They both continue to be very active, enjoying complex English country dancing, walking and biking; John enjoys the gym and Gladys enjoys the pool. John has had an interesting career becoming a high-pressure steam engineer working in New York City; he knows an enormous amount about the inner workings of many heating systems in the city! He was a “radio man” in the Navy in the 1950s and is now an avid amateur radio operator. He enjoys building radios as well and is bringing parts of eight different antique radios with him to Pennswood. In addition, he and Gladys have raced MGs competitively! Gladys was born in Italy, coming to the USA as an infant. She has had a varied and socially engaged career in teaching and social work. She trained in early childhood education, has taught special education for intellectually-challenged young people, and has been very active in voter registration, especially for African-Americans. With the Community Action Agency in New Rochelle, New York, she coordinated education and tutors for underprivileged children. Further, she was trained to work on a suicide-prevention hot line, DIAL HELP, which also provided outreach to seniors living on their own; she became Executive Director at DIAL HELP. She also became a CPR instructor, coordinating CPR training for Westchester County in the days when fire and police responders did not know the procedure; she would teach the responders who would then take this technique back to their stations and pass on the skill. Gladys’ father was an architect, and from childhood often worked with him on site, helping with measuring, chauffeuring and drafting. That experience led to work in two different architectural offices, designing and doing field work. Her work career ended with ten years teaching architecture at the high school level. John and Gladys travel frequently to Italy; they very much enjoyed a Galapagos Islands trip, and have visited Egypt and Colombia as well. Gladys is a gardener, already with an herb garden on her balcony; she is a ceramicist and knitter to boot! She is often found cooking, especially Northern Italian cuisine. John has four children and ten grandchildren, all in the New York area. When John and Gladys decided to move to a CCRC, they explored dozens in Connecticut, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Pennswood was the “winner” as they liked the atmosphere, the Quaker values, and the fact that is was so well run. They are rapidly involving themselves in the community and look forward to meeting many more residents when Pennswood is able to completely re-open. The Biographies Committee
