Thanks for the response. I don’t see anyfolders inGroove Music onlyalbumcovers. This would be OK ifI didn’t have so manyfolders that I put together myselfwithvarious artists and genres. The music uploaded to Groove Music onits own. I’mnot sure I understand what youmeanabout the issue beingconfined to Groove Music. As far as I know there are no other files withmusic inthem. It’s disappointingthat I’d have to manually put together allmyfiles whenit would have beenaneasier upload simplyas a MyMusic folder.

Onwindows 7, mymusic folder would automaticallyarrange mysongs into an"album"folder. It would be a folder withthe albumart as the iconand the songs inside inorder. Again, Windows 7 did this automatically. Whydoesn't Windows 10?? I don't see the option anyone to turnthat on.

There are manypossibilities, and I’llrunthrougha few options to see ifwe canget lucky. More importantly, inmyopinionyou’re doingtwo things wrong, and one ofthose could impact muchmore thanjust downloads. Downloads is for downloads, not for storage. AnemptyDownloads folder. Inmyopinion, the Downloads folder should never be used for long-termstorage. It was never intended as a place to keep things, and leavingthings inthe Downloads folder is a recipe for disaster, whichyou’re discovering. Instead, once you’ve downloaded somethingyouintend to keep — anything— move it to a different folder ofyour own. Maybe create a “Utilities”folder inyour Documents folder, maybe create a “Downloaded PDFs”folder somewhere. Perhaps create folders bytopic, or whatever makes sense to you.

But move themsomewhere else. Ifyoulost anything, youaren’t backingup. Seriously, ifyoulost a file because the one copyyouhad ofit disappeared, clearlyyouaren’t backingup. That’s true whether it was inthe Downloads folder or anywhere else.

Ifyoulost somethingbecause it was deleted, thenit’s prettyobvious youhadn’t backed it up. Change that. Now. Start backingup your computer. Myrecommendationis a periodic image backup, withdailyincrementalbackups, but the details matter less thandoingit .

Ifyour Downloads folder had beengettingbacked up (as animage backup would have ensured), youwouldn’t have lost anythingexcept the time to locate the backup copyand restore the file(s).

Straws to grasp at. So, withthe admonitions out ofthe way, I do have a few things for youto try. Check the Recycle Bin. Ifthe files were accidentallydeleted bysomethingyoudid inWindows File Explorer, or bya Recycle Bin-aware utility, it’s possible the file(s) you’re lookingfor could stillbe there. Iftheyare, youcanquicklyand easilyrestore them.

Searchfor the file(s) . Tryto recallthe name ofone ofthe files, and searchfor it usingWindows Searchor the Command Prompt. Ifthe file was moved to a different folder, youmight find it there. This mayalso lead youto understand what happened and locate other files as well.

Check File History. Assumingyouhave it enabled, see ifyoucanlocate the missingfile(s) inWindows 10’s File History. Check OneDrive . Ifyou’re usingOneDrive, it’s possible that your Downloads folder will, ironically, be uploaded to your OneDrive storage. Dependingonyour OneDrive account, it mayhave a File Historyor Recycle Binyoucancheck.

Tryfile recovery. As a last-gasp effort, I’d trya file recoverytoollike Recuva to see ifthe files canbe recovered fromthe unused space onyour hard disk.

Youmaybe out ofluck. Difficult as it is to accept, it’s possible the files are gone forever. Since we don’t know whytheydisappeared, there’s little I canoffer to prevent this fromhappeningagain— except, ofcourse, not using Downloads for longtermstorage, and makingsure youstart backingup your machine right away.

Whyis Downloads so risky? Disk cleanup utility– downloads folder setting. The problemwithDownloads is prettysimple:I’mnot alone inconsideringit inappropriate for longtermstorage. For instance, various disk cleanup utilities — includingWindows’ own, shownabove 1 — offer to emptyit, or just emptyit without asking(theyshould ask, but it’s easyto overlook ifyou’re ina hurry).

Regardless ofwhether youagree withme or not, youneed to protect yourself, and the easiest wayis simplyto move the files elsewhere once downloaded.

Podcast audio. Video Narration. Footnotes & References. 1 :Interestingly, this optionis apparentlybeingremoved fromfuture versions ofWindows Disk Cleanup. It maystillexist inother tools, however. Related Posts. Leo Who? 28 comments on“MyFiles Disappeared fromDownloads. How Do I Get ThemBack?” the writer didn`t mentionwhat OS theywere usingbut Mr. N assumed it was win10. ido too. i`ve never had this problemwithwin7 ult. and i`ve had memes, files and pics onthere for years. the writer also didn`t mentionhow manypeople use their device. someone else could have deleted them. but as it is withanyfamily, ask around and nobodyknows.

I have never had this issue myself. I usuallyend up havingto clear out the Downloads folder myself, so I amnot missinganythingcurrent that imay have downloaded.

Youmentionthat the optionis beingremoved ina future version. The optionto cleanup the downloads folder or to NOT delete the downloads folder? BTW, I did have a subdirectoryinside mydownloads folder deleted bydisk cleanup once. Dang. Lessonlearned.

The downloads folder is apparentlyno longer goingto be listed inthe disk cleanup tool. Youkeep sayingthat, Leo, but as oftoday, January8, 2020, onanupdated Windows 10 OS………it’s stillthere! Inthe meantime, we get it; advice welltakenabout “the Downloads folder should never be used for long-termstorage.” However, for those ofus (the great “unwashed”) who DO have a tendencyto leave downloads IN the Download folder (seems a prettynatural thingto do…based onthe name ofthe folder AND the fact that MILLIONS ofus DO IT), I don’t think we should be “punished”bybeing “encouraged”to intentionallyDELETE our downloads….whichis what your advice “Myapproach, however, is to select everything…..Click OK” inthe “UsingWindows Disk Cleanup”effectivelydoes.

Youevengo so far as to DOUBLE DOWN onyour advice to trashpossiblyneeded/wanted downloads byrepeatingyour advice to “once again, it’s just fine to select everythinginthe list to be cleaned up…Click OK, and Disk Cleanup goes to work”under the “Cleaningsystemfiles” heading.

How about just addinga little caveat inBOTH ofthese instructionsets…alongthe lines of“Select everything, but be cautious to ensure you’ve inspected your Downloads folder FIRST, to make sure you’ve removed and/or re-located anythingyouworked hard to download AND planto keep!”

And, sure, also include reminder at that time about how we were “bad boys and girls”to keep our things there inthe first place. I guess what I’m sayingis….a little more carrot, a little less stick.

Another option. The browser’s default save locationmaynot be set to the Download folder. The locationcanbe checked, verified, or changed in your browser’s Settings. This also applies ifyouare usinga download manager.

Lew & Leo, I created a new folder for downloads, moved allcontents fromDownloads into it, thenchanged Firefoxto point to the newlycreated folder. Excellent suggestions. THANK YOU!

I purposefullyhave eachofmyweb browsers onallofmycomputers (for Windows and Mac) configured to (1) have the default download locationset to the “Desktop”folder and (2) require me to actuallysave the download, potentiallyrename it, and select the folder it goes to ifnot the “Desktop”. I do this because the “Desktop”is aneasyplace for alldownloaded files to initiallygo to and theneither move it to a more appropriate folder or delete it whenI amfinished withit.

I downloaded the user manualfor mynew cellphone to the download folder. It was there for less thana week before it was gone. I found it inmy setup folder where I keep the installationfiles for the apps onmycomputer. This article is the first time I’ve beennotified that the download folder is a temporarylocationfor Microsoft. Good to know evenifit is thirtyfive years or so late. I also download Overdrive audio books to this download folder, and other books that aren’t “Kindle”books and delete themafter listeningto or readingthe book, but I don’t ever remember thembeingmoved somewhere else. Maybe some ofthemare stillonmycomputer and nobody knows where Microsoft put them.

There is a programcalled (SearchEverything) It works onthe Windows OS’s. I haven’t used it onWindows 10 as I don’t have it installed, but I have runit onWinXP ,7,8. It willfind ,as its name implies, Everythingevendeleted files. It has manyother options for searching. Hope this will help.

I never had anyidea there was anydanger. I’ve never lost a file fromDownloads. I moved myDownloads folder inside myOneDrive folder so it has beenbacked up and I also do monthlysystemimage backups and dailyincrementals so it wouldn’t have beena bigproblemto get a file back. After readingthis article, I emptied the Download folder into another folder. Actually, I should take some time and move those files into more appropriate folders.

The biggest problemwithusingthe default “Downloads”folder is that it is a folder under your user’s personalfolder. Since myold Win7 machines runwitha standard user for everyone and anadminuser for me, downloadinga file while logged inas adminmade it difficult for other users, either onthe machine or onthe network, to find these files.

What I ended up doingwas to create a “Downloads”folder directlyoffthe root folder, and tellingWindows to download to that folder. Problem solved!

I think there is also a Windows induced confusiononjust where “downloads”go. I canfind at least 4 folders inmyDirectorynamed “Downloads: 1. C:\Users\My-PC\Downloads 2. C:\Users\Public\Downloads 3. C:\Downloads 4. C:\Users\Bruce-PC\OneDrive\Documents\Downloads.

Whichofthese is the “default”directoryfor whenI download something? I believe it to be number 1 onthe list above. But whatever or wherever it is located, I have never lost a file that I downloaded. And, as Leo suggests, ifit is animportant download, I move it to a separate, distinct folder (and back it up!)

That “C:\Downloads”folder is just plainweird . A “downloads”folder is user-specific; what onEarthwould be the point inmakinga non-user specific “downloads”folder. Ifyousay, “to share betweenusers,”I answer with, ‘O.K., thenwhat is the “C:\Users\Public\Downloads”folder there for?’ Like I said — weird . Because “C:\Users\whatever”aside, MOST PCs are single-user machines. I do the similar — mydownloads folder is c:\Downloads. My OneDrive is c:\OneDrive. MyDropboxis C:\Dropbox. Makes typingthese entries into various openand save dialogboxes MUCH easier.

MyWindows default Downloads folder was originallyc:\Users\marks\Downloads\ but I’ve changed that to c:\Users\marks\OneDrive\Downloads\. Some programs have their owndefault Downloads folder whichis canbe changed inside the program.

Youcanmove the Downloads (or anyfolder) usingWindows File Explorer. This article explains how to move the MyDocuments folder but it works for anyfolder. I moved Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, and Videos inside the OneDrive folder so allmypersonalfiles are synchronized onthe cloud and are onallofmycomputers. Ho Do I Change the Locationofthe MyDocuments Folder.

I have two Download folders. One inthe root of“C”and one inUser account. Whenever I download a file (suchas a pdf), I’llmove it immediatelyto anappropriate folder inMyDocuments (ex:“Manuals”). IfI did not WANT the pdf, whywould I have downloaded it?

Other files inmyDownload folders are installationfiles for various programs. WhenI update software and it comes as a download, I’llkeep the previous installationfile. Never know ifI might need or want it. Thanks to Leo’s comments, I’llprobablymove mydownloaded installionfiles to another folder.

– I use the “Disk Cleanup”toolonlyfor reducingthe size ofthose infamous “c:\windows\winsxs\”subfolder(s). After installinga few socalled “Rollup”updates (inWindows 7 & 8) those folders containA LOT OF extra files. (AlthoughWin7 & Win8 are now “ontheir wayout”). – I also make sure to untick ALL boxes inthat one toolbefore I tick a few boxes.

1) I too create a C:\downloads folder onmycomputers, and I make sure it’s included indata backups. (There’s probablya registryhack that would make the OS think that this is the mainDownloads folder, but instead I just put a shortcut to it inthe Downloads folder.) 2) I set my browsers to prompt me for a save locationfor downloaded files. 3) The onlyfiles that I save inC:/downloads are installationand update files for programs I installfromwebsites (not major installations like Office, whichinstallthemselves intheir ownspeciallocations). Everythingelse I download goes into the appropriate folder.

WhenI set up a new machine, I canoftenbringover the dozens ofprograms that the old one used; and insome cases I canuse the same setup files used inthe originalmachine.

Ifyouhave automatic file backups goingon, withperiodic image backups, won’t yousooner-or-later be deletingold backups, eveniftheycontain the files that youdidn’t realize had beendeleted? Image backups are prettybig, and sooner or later yourunout ofspace for the old ones…

Eventuallyyoudo, yes, but youget to choose how large a window ofrecoverabilityyouwant or need. This mayseemsimplistic but I have never deleted anydownloads. I was never sure what to delete. Anyideas onhow to proceed ? Well, presumablyyoudownloaded things for various reasons, so you’llneed to go throughyour downloads, identifywhat theyare, whyyou downloaded themand thendecide what to do witheach. Some youmight keep (move to a different folder) others youmight delete. There’s no hard-and-fast rule here — it reallydepends onwhat youwant.

This is another reasonI dislike keepingthings inDownloads — I prefer to make those keep/discard decisions right away, whenmyreasonfor downloadingis freshinmymind.

The keywords inyour advise are “freshinmymind”Is there a programwhichwilltellyouwhena download was used last? Nope, not that I’maware of. “A download”is just “a file”onyour computer. I’ve never had anyproblems losingfiles fromthe Download folder, but ever since this article came out, I’ve beenmovingallofmydownloaded files to their appropriate folders right after downloadingand it’s mucheasier to find files now

I’ve beenusingcomputers since longbefore Windows existed, and evenbefore MS-DOS was ubiquitous. (Think Apple II’s and TRS-80’s.) WhenMS-DOS came out, there was no default Download folder. I created myown– C:\Downloads. The earlyversions ofWindows did not have a default Download folder either, infact, ifI remember correctly, the user Downloads folder didn’t appear as part ofthe Windows folder structure untilWindows Vista came out. Most browsers, as lew b noted, most browsers have a settingfor where to download files, and evento ask where to download them. I use Chrome and it is set to use C:\Download as a repositoryfor file downloads, and also to ask where to place themas I occasionallyput theminto a C:\Downloads sub-folder. I have never lost anyfiles fromC:\Downloads as far back as Windows 3.1 (and earlier).

I have the same problembut withmymobile. RecentlyI download some video files. But one or two days latter theyare gone fromthe chrome. So I upgrade it, but facingthe same problem.

Optimizing Windows 10, Build 2004, for a Virtual Desktop role Written by Robert M. Smith, Program Manager, Azure Global Customer Engineering Date Created: May 12, 2020 Date Updated: July 08, 2020 Date Published: tbd Contributors: Tim Muessig, Senior Premier Field Engineer; Narklis Engler, Principal Program Manager Version 1.2 Document Change History Version Changes 1.0 Adding verbiage for Windows Virtual Desktop, and Windows 10 build 2004 specifically 1.1 Additional updates for 2004 1.2 Final pass, updated group policy, services, tasks, and added info about Storage Sense for disk cleanup. Introduction This article is intended to provide suggestions for configurations for Windows 10, build 2004, for optimal performance in Virtualized Desktop environments, including Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD). All settings in this guide are suggested optimization settings only and are in no way requirements. The information in this guide is pertinent to Windows 10, version 2004, operating system (OS) build 19041. The guiding principles to optimize performance of Windows 10 in a virtual desktop environment are to minimize graphic redraws and “effects”, background activities that have no major benefit to the virtual desktop environment, and generally reduce running processes to the bare minimum. A secondary goal is to reduce disk space usage in the base image to the bare minimum. With virtual desktop implementations, the smallest possible base, or “gold” image size, can slightly reduce memory utilization on the host system, as well as a small reduction in overall network operations required to deliver the desktop environment to the consumer. No optimizations should reduce the user experience.
