SPANISH LANGUAGE DIVISION From my Desk Charo Welle http://ataspd.org The Journey to ATA60 Leadership Council It was a peaceful and delightful train journey from San Administrator Diego—where I was visiting my lovely daughter—to Palm Rosario ‘Charo’ Welle Springs the Tuesday prior to the official start of the American Translators Association 60th Annual Conference (ATA60). [email protected] My mind, however, was swirling with thoughts about all the Assistant Administrator tasks ahead of me. For months, the SPD leadership had been Marco Díaz preparing activities to welcome and serve division members, [email protected] yet there was still so much to be done. I struggled to stay calm. Webmasters/Website Committee The Amtrak trip from San Diego to Palm Springs required Marco Díaz & Clarisa Moraña a bus commute for the last leg. The bus stop in Fullerton [email protected] seemed unusually deserted and lonely—there was only one Editorial Committee passenger besides me. I wondered if I was at the right place. To my relief, once the bus arrived, people started to show Olga Lucía Mutis, Sue Horn Paul Merriam, Virginia Pérez-Santalla up. Suddenly, I was approached by friendly faces that also seemed unsure, asking if the bus was going to Palm Springs. Professional Development Committee My curious self could not help but ask if they happened to be Gabriela Escarrá & Rosario ‘Charo’ Welle traveling to the ATA conference. Their answer was yes. It was just what I needed to hear, so I could refocus my thoughts Hospitality & Public Relations Committee on the support committed to in the previous months by SPD Mercedes de la Rosa Sherman leaders. I felt that everything would be okay. Student Involvement Committee Ártemis López The Oxford Dictionary defines consistency as “the quality of achieving a level of performance which does not vary greatly Digital & Social Media Committee in quality over time” (Oxford English Dictionary, 3rd ed., s.v. Edna Santizo & Victoria Méndez “consistency,” accessed February 6, 2020, https://www.lexico. Podcast Committee com/definition/consistency). The SPD leaders and volunteers Dolores Guiñazú have demonstrated consistency while the Digital Era has dramatically changed the way division members network, Espalista Open to all Division members interact, learn, and exchange knowledge. As the Digital Era rapidly evolves, the SPD continues to adapt to the 21st- [email protected] ... century translator and interpreter and their demand for Moderators immediate, relevant, reliable information. Paul Merriam & Milly Suazo 2 Adapting to this breakneck pace has required the help of many generous colleagues who contribute their talents and time to help connect division members everywhere in the United States and the world. I am pleased to introduce the 2019-2020 SPD Leadership Council (SPD LC) and the newest committee members. My report on ATA60 and the division’s recent and future activities follows. 2019-2020 SPD Leadership Council The SPD LC and its committees are working on the following activities and services: Editorial Committee (EC) and Intercambios. Intercambios, in both its downloadable PDF version and the Intercambios Online blog, continues to provide excellent content and modern design for readers’ professional development and continuing education. Gloria’s editorial describes the outstanding articles by the generous contributors to this issue. The EC also welcomed three new members: Olga Lucía Mutis, Paul Merriam, and Sue Horn. They join Virginia Pérez-Santalla as advisors, content reviewers, and support for the editor. Website Committee (WSC). The division welcomes SPD member Clarisa Moraña as co-webmaster along with Marco Díaz. Together they will publish the steady stream of fresh content for SPD members and followers. In her role as co-webmaster, Clarisa joins the SPD LC. SPD member Pablo Soriano has also agreed to join the WSC as one of the proofreaders of Spanish content. Digital and Social Media Committee (DSMC). DSMC member Victoria Méndez agreed to co-chair the committee with Edna Santizo. As co-chair, Victoria joins the SPD LC. We also welcomed SPD members Andy Benzo and María Baker to help Edna and Victoria moderate the division’s social media accounts. Espalista. Espalista moderators Milly Suazo and Paul Merriam, with the help of Jamie Padula, transitioned the listserv to a new home in Groups.io! The move is in response to the recent changes in Yahoo Groups. ATA Headquarters emailed an invitation to all current SPD members on January 31 with instructions on how to subscribe to the new group. To subscribe, carefully follow the instructions in the message. Podcast Committee. Podcast host Dolores Guiñazú and the Podcast Committee wrapped the first season of the ATA SPD Podcast with seven episodes. The latest episode, released on January 6, is a great interview with twins Judith and Dagmar Jenner. Podcast listeners won’t want to miss it. Student Involvement Committee (SIC). The first SIC Breakfast Meet-Up was held during ATA60. All ATA members currently enrolled in T&I or related programs had... an opportunity to network and share academic goals and experiences. This first effort hosted 30 attendees! Intercambios / February 2020 3 Hospitality and Public Relations Committee (HPRC). The Hospitality Committee led a philanthropic initiative to promote the Spanish language and Spanish literacy at conference cities. Thanks to the generosity and support of division members, 52 books in Spanish were donated to the Palm Springs Public Library and its Spanish-speaking patrons. We presented the books to the library liaisons during the SPD annual meeting. The SPD LC thanks Patricia Cabrera, HPRC member, for leading this initiative. Professional Development Committee (PDC). The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Florida (ATIF) and the SPD have worked consistently to organize and promote In Miami Spring Into Action (SIA 2020) since June 2019. The event is offered in collaboration with the ATA Florida Chapter (ATIF) and the Miami Dade College Eduardo J. Padron Campus (MDCEPC), the host venue. SIA 2020 will feature 45 sessions by 32 esteemed international and national speakers, including Palabras Mayores, Dr. Alexander Rainof, and Pablo Mugüerza. To learn more and register, visit: https://springintoac- tion.info/. Our beloved Rudy Heller has stepped down as co-chair, so we welcome our colleague Gabriela Escarrá who has accepted the invitation to co-chair the committee with me. 2020 Distinguished Speaker. The SPD LC works closely with the HPRC and PDC committees to select distinguished speakers (DS) for the annual conference. The SPD LC voted on six nominations to choose one candidate for DS. The division submitted the DS candidate to the ATA conference organizer, who approved it. The proposed DS is preparing proposals for ATA61 and we hope they are accepted. 2019. Annual Dinner, Annual Meeting, and Spanish Sessions during ATA60 . The annual meeting had a full house with approximately 180 members in attendance. The annual dinner on Friday, October 25, 2019 at Oscar’s Cafe and Bar was sold out with 114 guests. Feedback about the venue, the food, and the atmosphere was very positive. The Spanish language track featured a good variety of sessions with both English-into-Spanish and Spanish- into-English presentations. 2019-20 Nominating Committee. My second term as administrator will end this October at the annual con- ference in Boston. The 2020 SPD Nominating Committee is preparing a slate of candidates for the administrator and assistant administrator positions. Watch for official ATA information about the SPD elections. While the SPD leaders and volunteers—the backbones on which this administration relies—are working steadily to prepare for ATA61 in Boston, I’m focused on remaining available to mentor and support them with the same energy, con- sistency, and commitment I have maintained since I was elected administrator in 2016.
