SHIPBUILDERS TO THE WORLD Introduction The following is extracted and slightly edited from the book ‘Shipbuilders to the World: 125 years of Harland and Wolff, Belfast 1861-1986’ by Michael Moss and John R. Hume published in 1986. The book was intended as a celebratory appraisal of the firm and as such focused mostly on the development of the shipyard. Although it was Edward Harland that began the firm, my interests are more familial than commercial and so the extracts below highlight the roles played by my great, great uncle Wolff and his uncle Gustav Schwabe. Moss and Hume write: During his apprenticeship Edward Harland had become friendly through his uncle, Dr. Thomas Harland, with Gustav Christian Schwabe. Thomas Harland had graduated in medicine from the University in Edinburgh in 1822 and had subsequently practiced in Salford. In 1842 he had married Mary Dugdale, niece of John Dugdale of Dovecot, a powerful Liverpool and Manchester merchant. Some years later Gustav Schwabe had married John Dugdale’s daughter, Helen (right). Gustav had been born in Hamburg in 1813, the son of Philipp Benjamin Schwabe, a wealthy Jewish merchant. During June 1819, along with the rest of his family, Gustav was baptised into the Lutheran church (source Staats Archiv Hamburg). In the 1820s many members of the Jewish community in Hamburg established businesses in Britain where trading conditions were more liberal than in Germany. The Schwabe family participated in this trend. Salis Schwabe, Gustav's uncle, set up a calico printing business in Manchester and cousins M. M. and H. L Schwabe opened a merchant house with a branch in Glasgow. -

These latest plaques are spread across Ulster, from Newry in the south east, to the north west in Co Donegal. Apart from our busy plaque activities, the Circle has been hard at work enhancing the New Dictionary of Ulster Biography. All our work is unpaid, and Circle members meet regularly in committee every month, as fundraising and planning the plaques are always on-going activities, with the summer months often busy with events. I would like to thank my colleagues on the Circle committee for their support and their valued contributions throughout the year. A voluntary body like ours depends entirely on the continuing commitment of its committee members. Sloatsburg, New York
Coordinates: 41°9′43″N 74°11′16″W Sloatsburg, New York Sloatsburg is a village in the town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York, United States. Located Sloatsburg east of Orange County, it is at the southern entrance to Village Harriman State Park. The population was 3,152 at the 2010 census.[2] The village is named after Stephen Sloat, an early European landowner. The Harland & Wolff archive is one of the most extensive business archives held in the Public Record Office. But it was not until Michael Moss and John R. Hume, who had earlier completed a similar account of the history of the Scottish shipbuilders, William Beardmore & Co. of Glasgow, undertook to write the company's official history published in 1986 as Shipbuilders to the World, that the various departments in Harland & Wolff began to yield up their records for ultimate deposit in PRONI. -

In the 1860s and 1870s the Liverpool, New York & Philadelphia Steam Ship Company, universally known by its nickname, the "Inman Line," was one of the premier maritime enterprises on the North Atlantic. It remains one of the most famous and celebrated of all the great nineteenth century steamship lines carrying on the trade between Europe and America. While the primary routes served were from Liverpool to Philadelphia and New York, feeder services were developed from the Continent, such as the port of Antwerp, which resulted in a wider casting of the net for cargo and passengers. The origin of the Inman Line lies with William Inman of Leicester, England, who was born on 6 April 1825.1 Inman was the fourth son of Charles Inman, a partner in the freight distribution firm of Pickford and Company, and his wife, Jane Clay Inman. -

Gustav Wilhelm Wolff Was Born on Loth November
The following account of Gustav Wolff is given by H. Jefferson in his book: ‘Viscount Pirrie of Belfast’ published by Mullan in 1948. Gustav Wilhelm Wolff was born on 10th November 1834, in the prosperous city of Hamburg, the third largest city in Germany and most important commercial port in Europe, son of Moritz Wolff, Merchant, and Fanny Schwabe. As was to be expected his native city had considerable magnetism for the boy to interest himself in shipping or marine engineering. He decided, with his father's advice, to be an engineer, and like many of the well-to-do German youths, in those days especially, he crossed to England at 14 years of age to acquire training in his career. Most of his school days had been at home, but he spent one year, 1849 till 1850, or more, in the Middle school of Liverpool College, Liverpool. a first class school founded in 1840. On leaving school in 1850 he was apprenticed to Joseph Whitworth &Company, a Manchester firm of wide and favourable reputation, engaged in making tools and machinery. While he was just 21 he was selected by the firm to represent it in the year 1855 at an Exhibition in Paris. Later he joined the staff of Goodfellow & Company of Hyde as a draughtsman. His next move brought him to Belfast to occupy a similar position with Robert Hickson & Company at their Queen's Island Shipbuilding Yard. Sir Edward Harland made Wolff his partner in the year 1862. He had considerable ability as an Engineer in addition to which he imported capital to the young firm; he was a diligent worker.
