It is with gratitude and appreciation that we look back upon the 2018-2019 school year at Riverside Presbyterian . As you will see in this year’s Riverside Review, the last academic school year was another outstanding one for RPDS. Most notably, we celebrated RPDS’s 70th year as a pioneering and beloved independent elementary school, and with the leadership of the Board of Trustees and the help of the community, we completed our new comprehensive strategic plan.

For generations, RPDS has embraced the tradition of remaining at the forefront of education and advancing its programming and offerings to ensure every student receives an outstanding education, all while building the foundational skills and dispositions for lifelong learning and personal achievement. This issue of the Riverside Review honors the traditions that are uniquely RPDS and celebrates the innovative and forward-thinking spirit of the community.

As a conscientious community, we continue our work of fulfilling Riverside’s mission and our dedication to safeguarding its future. Our 2019-2024 Strategic Plan renews our commitment to broadening the learning and experiential opportunities for our students, supporting and enriching our passionate and accomplished faculty and staff, providing a safe and engaging campus reflective of our dynamic child-centered approach, and ensuring accessibility and sustained institutional excellence for generations to come. Our established goals and priorities provide a clear vision for Riverside’s future. We look forward to implementing the strategic plan during the coming years and remain grateful for the work of the Board of Trustees and the contributions from faculty, parents, and alumni.

While the strategic priorities and goals keep us thinking ahead to the future, we continue to enjoy and appreciate the dynamic and rewarding activities occurring on campus each day. This year we welcomed two nationally known speakers, Rosetta Lee and Jim Reese, to engage with our faculty to develop their expertise and practices so that they may best provide our children with instruction and programming related to global competencies and deep thinking. Award winning author-illustrator Brian Collier also visited RPDS and shared his story and artwork with our students as part of our new Author in Residence series. We invite you to learn more about these visits in the pages that follow.

Also included in this year’s review are stories highlighting the many ways our faculty are guiding students to transform their thinking about the world in which they live and drive change in tangible ways. This type of learning is a hallmark of our programming and serves as the foundation that allows our students to emerge from RPDS as life-long learners who are poised to become their best selves, take initiative, and care deeply about others and the world.

When students graduate from RPDS, they leave with exceptional academic preparation, a deep respect for themselves and others, an eagerness to serve, and a strong moral grounding. This year’s class of 2019 embodies the RPDS Graduate Traits and leaves a legacy of service and strong leadership. We honor our graduates and wish them all the best as they embark on new adventures and the next stage of their educational journeys.

This is an exciting time to be a part of RPDS. As we live and celebrate the many wonderful traditions that make Riverside special, we look forward to preparing our children for a future in which they will flourish and thrive.

Thank you for generously supporting the mission of our school and for helping RPDS to provide an outstanding elementary school experience for our students. We look forward to our continued partnership to ensure our children live, lead, and serve as conscientious citizens.

Ben Ketchum Head of School

1 Board of Trustees John-Paul Saenz YEAR in REVIEW President, RPDS Board of Trustees

The 2018-2019 school year was another great year for all of us to celebrate. Riverside Presbyterian Day School (RPDS) successfully delivered to over four hundred students on its mission to educate the mind, nurture the spirit, and foster the development of the whole child. This year was also personally meaningful and important to me and my family. As parents, Jennifer and I experienced firsthand the culmination and final outcome of an RPDS education. Our oldest daughter, Mia, graduated from the sixth grade. She and her classmates are not only ready for the next step in their educational career - they are now well prepared to excel. RPDS provides the best faculty and unmatched academic programming to achieve this result. They have all learned the importance of helping others by participating in community service projects. RPDS has a clear culture of servant leadership that teaches them not only how to help others but, more importantly, why it matters. The graduating class is a group of young boys and girls with amazing character. RPDS instills in them, among other honorable traits, the importance of humble pride, self-discipline, ambitious purpose, and respect for others. All of these traits provide an invaluable foundation of character that will serve RPDS students well their entire lives. Most admirably, the sixth grade class displayed all of these traits with an outward, visible love for one another. I had the opportunity to accompany the class on their Washington, D.C. field trip and witness how much they truly cared for each other. When one of their classmates fell ill early on the trip, I saw them come together on their own initiative to give him a class souvenir of the trip he had missed. Unknowingly, they displayed this loving care throughout the year by celebrating their successes together and helping each other when needed. At the end of the year, realizing that it defined who they were, they chose love as their class theme, #ByOurLove. As parents, Jennifer and I could not be more proud of our daughter and of her classmates for what they learned at RPDS and, more importantly, for who they became. Our youngest daughter, Lucy, will be a fifth grader next year, and we have never been more confident in the value and benefit of an RPDS education. I believe it’s simply the best school. This year was also my last year serving as president of the RPDS board of trustees. I have greatly enjoyed the experience and look forward to continue serving RPDS as a board member in other capacities. We are fortunate to have an active and diverse board of trustees that is deeply committed to the long-term success of RPDS. I am thankful for each trustee, for all of their individual contributions, and for the opportunity to be part of such a special team. Under the new leadership of Brooke Rice, the board of trustees is in better hands than ever. I am especially grateful for Ben Ketchum’s thoughtful vision and leadership, the talented and caring team of faculty and staff, and the community of engaged parents, grandparents, and alumni that makes RPDS such an excellent school and foundation for our children. Congratulations to all of us on another great year for RPDS and on many more to come,

“Good morning, Mr. Ron!” These are the same words every Mr. Ron! child proclaimed with a joyful smile as they stepped on to the campus. These greetings represented a true appreciation for everything Mr. Ron did for RPDS and are reflections of both the love and gratitude all feel toward this friend, colleague, 15 Years of Service and dedicated member of the RPDS community. at RPDS We thank Mr. Ron for his meticulous attention to the smallest of details and for his commitment to ensuring our students had a pristine environment conducive to learning. Whether it be ensuring our safety, maintaining the facilities, or cheerfully engaging with children and faculty in a skit, video, or school performance, Mr. Ron never failed to deliver or captivate our hearts and minds with his humor and kindness. Without pause, Mr. Ron’s default was serving the needs of those around him. He was in many ways our super hero in residence. Hardworking, compassionate, courageous, intelligent, morally grounded, and of course, always there in an instant. When Mr. Ron was not keeping watch over us, he contributed to his local church and entertained the patrons in area nursing homes with his electric bingo board. Although we were not privileged to receive the call of one of his lucky numbers, we were lucky that we were able to call him one of our own. Mr. Ron literally and figuratively made RPDS shine. He graciously shared his time and talents while simultaneously giving his heart and soul to the people of RPDS. We are forever grateful for his fifteen years of service and appreciate the way he watched over, not just the campus, but each of us within the RPDS community. We wish Mr. Ron the best as he begins a new and exciting chapter in his life.

Jan has without question proven herself as an inspiring educator with a unique gift to reach the hearts and minds of all the children she encounters. Jan’s guidance and leadership around the school’s diversity, character, service, and social and emotional learning initiatives is truly commendable. She leads professional development, presents at local and national conferences, coordinates speakers to enrich the faculty and parent experience, and passionately heads RPDS’s Diversity Leadership Committee. Jan naturally builds strong connections with all types of people and finds numerous ways to help others become their best selves. When teachers, parents, administrators, and faculty need direction or simply seek to work through an idea or dilemma, they without pause pursue Jan’s counsel. Patiently and empathetically, Jan welcomes everyone with open arms, giving the individual or group in front of her the undivided attention they deserve. Kind, generous, energetic, and optimistic, Jan is the perfect force to inspire learning and help students go to the next level. As one who strives to form the “whole child” and enrich the overall student experience, Jan clearly embodies the Riverside Way and is a true professional who leads with her heart.

2019 J. Beatty Williams Outstanding Service Award Honoree Mike Lee

Seventy years ago, Dr. Albert Kissling and the Riverside Presbyterian Church Session dreamed of starting a day school. They asked J. Beatty Williams, the volunteer chairman of the Educational Committee to assume leadership to ensure the school’s formation. In 1994, the RPDS Board of Trustees established the J. Beatty Williams Outstanding Service Award to honor an especially gifted individual who has demonstrated exceptional loyalty, support, and tireless dedication to the growth and development of Riverside Presbyterian Day School. Mike Lee, our 2019 recipient, truly embodies the Riverside Way. Full of grace and kindness, Mike is always willing to lend a helping hand. For the past 13 years, Mike has been a crucial piece of the technological infrastructure at RPDS. He is a person of great character and is a tremendous blessing to all who know him. Like the giant tree in Psalms 1:1-3, Mike is fruitful, steadfast, alive and thriving. He does not wither when the heat of trying times comes. “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” Psalms 1:1-3 5 2018-19 LEADING THE WAY

Leading the way toward Riverside’s commitment to equity and inclusion, Jan Reeder was tasked with leading the first steering committee on Diversity for the 2018 Council of ’s Annual Convention held in Jacksonville on November 15-16, 2018. The Diversity committee engaged five national speakers who created opportunities for educator learning and growth around the value of diversity, inclusion and global citizenship. Mrs. Reeder was one of those speakers presenting on the topic of Diversity: Opening the Door for Meaningful Dialogue. She spoke to independent school administrators on using learning routines and visible thinking to open honest, meaningful discussion that engages faculty in the value of diversity work. The FCIS Convention theme challenged us all to focus on “Reimagining Education: Education for the Next Generation,” and the newly established Diversity track will support FCIS schools’ ability to best prepare students for the future.

Ben Ketchum, Jan Reeder, and Donette Snyder continue to be active participants of the NAIS People of Color Conference, the flagship of the National Association of Independent Schools commitment to equity and justice in teaching and learning. More than 6,400 educators and students joined together in Nashville, TN November 29-December 1 to explore the theme of Equitable Schools and Inclusive Communities: Harmony, Discord, and the Notes in Between.

This year, our Kindergarten and First Grade teachers had the opportunity to travel to Chicago, IL and Nashville, TN to participate in an immersive professional development workshop hosted by IMSE, the Institute for Multisensory Education. While there, our teachers learned a wide variety of strategies designed to improve student retention of phonics patterns, spelling rules, and high frequency words. The experience was profound! Our faculty came back energized and excited to integrate those new methods into their classroom practices. The results have been astonishing. Significant measurable gains were made this year in applied spelling and phonics. They are excited to deepen and extend their practice next year as they continue to hone their skills with this powerful approach to spelling and phonics instruction.

RPDS was extended a special invitation to take part in an exciting new opportunity offered by NAIS called The Strategy Lab. This is in response to Ben Ketchum’s and Jan Reeder’s discussions with Tim Fish, chief innovation officer at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), about the value of continuous innovation as best practice. The Strategy Lab workshop is by invitation only and designed for cutting-edge schools engaged in a thought-provoking, fast-paced, and productive journey of school reimagination. Ben Ketchum, Jan Reeder, Ruthie Simmons, and Sloane Castleman attended March 13-15 in Charlotte, NC, where they were able to work as a team and cross-collaborate with the NAIS Reimaging staff to blend theory and practice toward innovative strategies for advancing Riverside’s strategic plan. The main priority of the workshop is to help schools learn a process of innovation that’s manageable, impactful, and repeatable to enable transformational change. Having just finished our RPDS strategic planning, the team found this workshop to be incredibly helpful as a next step in advancing our strategic thinking and mission-driven priorities. RPDS Faculty and Staff are life-long learners and participate in year-round professional development. Here are more examples of our commitment to innovation & professional growth from 2018-19:

Author in Residence: Bryan Collier In October, RPDS hosted author-illustrator Bryan Collier for a day. Mr. Collier is a four-time recipient of the Caldecott Honor Medal for Children’s Book Illustration and nine-time recipient of the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration. During his entertaining and encouraging presentations, 1st-6th Grade students learned how Mr. Collier was inspired by children’s book authors Ezra Jack Keats and Crockett Johnson to draw and write books for children. Mr. Collier persisted for seven years in submitting his first book to publishers before finally having it accepted for publication. Mr. Collier talked about the complex visual content and messages found in picture books, and emphasized reading both words and pictures to understand the meaning of the story. Following his presentation, students were able to meet Mr. Collier personally, ask more questions, and have books autographed.

7 2018-19 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SPEAKERS

Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee Our March professional development day was devoted to advancing our strategic goal of providing a rich experience in which diversity, global competencies, and deep thinking are interwoven in the fabric of our school. Our speaker, Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee, is a renowned leader and presenter for the National Association of Independent Schools, faculty for the NAIS Diversity Leadership Institute, and national expert in the fields of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice. Rosetta presented on the topic “Inclusion in the Early Years: Why, What, and How” to our entire faculty, administration, and staff.

Rosetta engaged our faculty in examining ways we can implement age appropriate practices in our classrooms to develop intentionally inclusive, culturally responsive, and globally conscious students. Together we discussed how to think generatively about growing a school community and learning environment that is inclusive, respects the uniqueness of all individuals, and promotes a deeper understanding of varying points of view.

Rosetta encourages open conversations about differences, and she believes mistakes are our greatest learning opportunities. In her view, a hallmark of a courageous conversation doesn’t come from having the right answer ready; it comes from a genuine desire to connect and explain. Rosetta expressed that “authentic relationships and close friendships across differences are created not by avoiding questions but by addressing them with honesty, candor, sensitivity, and empathy.”

“I believe that education has the power to transform lives and provide limitless opportunities. I also believe that schools have the capacity to silence and marginalize voices or honor and empower them depending on how that education is delivered. My life’s work, therefore, is to do what I can to help schools become more inclusive and world-changing for all.”

- Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee

8 Jim Reese Guided by the belief that cutting edge schools are schools that shift from a teacher-centered delivery of information to an approach in which students’ learning is driven by a culture of deep thinking, questioning, and problem solving, the RPDS faculty’s fall professional development day was spent with Jim Reese to learn about Project Zero from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The Project Zero approach provides teachers with tools to enrich and deliver relevant curriculum in ways that inspire students to use their creative, critical thinking.

“By constructing their own understanding of a text, they are going to remember it better,” Reese explained. “They are going to see more meaning … and they are going to remember the way they approached it when they approach something new, even if it is in a different discipline.”

This engaging professional development experience included a hands-on approach in which faculty used visible thinking routines to work on a problem of their choosing by applying the concepts Reese teaches. Some of the creative results of these faculty projects included reducing the waste of water on campus and exploring the 1st Grade Around the World experience by incorporating natural, authentic, diverse materials in our environment. Reese encouraged using a variety of meaningful ways to document students’ thinking and learning by recognizing students’ thinking skills when they emerge.

“I'm much more interested in ways educators engage in sustained, deeper thinking and learning, rather than a bag of tricks. When I visit classrooms, I look for signs of a culture of thinking and understanding, not a culture of compliance,” Reese said.

Jim Reese is the Director of the Professional Development Collaborative at Washington International School and former Education Coordinator of the Project Zero Classroom summer institute and former Education Chair of the Project Zero Perspectives off-site conferences.

“By constructing their own understanding of a text, they are going to remember it better,” Reese explained. “They are going to see more meaning … and they are going to remember the way they approached it when they approach something new, even if it is in a different discipline.”

- Jim Reese

11 Health and Wellness Focus in 6th Grade

In an intentional effort to provide our 6th graders with the knowledge and skills we feel are important as they transition to , we embarked on several programs and presentations aimed to educate the students and influence and encourage them to make healthy and morally sound decisions as they encounter new people and new situations in life outside of RPDS.

We invited several presenters onto our campus to meet with our students and parents.

On April 17th, Julie Collins and Maggie Do Valle, Youth Coordinators with Tobacco Free Jacksonville, spoke to parents and then students about JUULS and the dangers associated with vaping and e-cigarettes. With the incredibly high number of youth that have chosen to use these e-cigarettes, we felt that this was an important topic and was time well spent for our students.

On April 24th, Detective Brett Bolton from the Internet Crimes Against Children’s Unit of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spoke to parents and students about the dangers of the internet and how to maintain a healthy digital footprint. He gave several tips on keeping information such as your location hidden and the dangers of posting pictures in general.

As part of the Sexual Health Education Unit, Dr. Kim Dal Porto and Dr. Thomas Connally came on May 14th and spoke with the girls and boys separately. This unit includes the topics of puberty, anatomy, reproduction, relationships, values, and decision-making.

In the midst of the Metabolism Unit in Science, the 6th grade was invited to visit TIAA Field and hear from the Jaguars' nutritionist and trainers. This trip coincided well with the unit and provided a wonderful launch for their cross-curricular project addressing health and wellness that the students undertook during the last few months

of the year. 12 Educational, financial, intellectual, spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and environmental—these are the health and wellness subtopics that the 6th graders were immersed in for their last trimester at RPDS. In place of the conventional research paper about historical figures that 6th Grade students were required to complete in years past, the 6th Grade teachers decided to teach these same fundamental research skills via different means in order to stimulate curiosity and creativity. Thus, after an inspirational visit from Harvard Project Zero expert Jim Reese, we developed a series of activities that broke through the traditional classroom walls to deepen our students' thinking, guide them to develop their own understandings, and teach them that their words and actions can and will affect change.

In Language Arts and History, students researched narrowed-down aspects of their chosen topics and considered alternative points of view in order to effectively argue their opinions about relevant and current debatable questions. In Science, they worked in small groups to determine the best uses of images, music, camera angles, and words to elicit desired emotions in the viewer. In Music, students worked together to create and perform original songs about their health and wellness topics. And, instrumental to the success of the Health and Wellness Fair—a culmination of all of our students' efforts, acquired knowledge, and skills gained during this titan project—we brought all of the 6th Grade students together on multiple Monday afternoons to provide them with opportunities to collaborate on the creation of their informative and interactive spaces that were designed to elicit passionate responses in the visitors. At the end of this project, we can safely say that the 6th-grade students gained so much more than basic research competence; they also cultivated essential 21st Century learning skills of collaboration, reflection, and perseverance.

13 Using Design Thinking for Service 5th Grade Goes from the Classroom to the Field!

Social and emotional learning, understanding diverse perspectives, and developing deep thinkers are key components of a 21st century education and a strategic part of our mission at RPDS as we develop global servant leaders who are innovative problem solvers.

That led Jan Reeder to ask the question, “What if we take a different approach to doing service projects so that students can experience empathy-driven innovation instead of the adults deciding what the service will be?” Or as Kelly Knight put it, “What if we flip the meaning of service on its head, put the students in charge, and let Design Thinking take the lead?” That’s how the Design Thinking model used in STEAM class became real world for the 5th grade students this year.

Since leadership development through Pathfinders at Camp Montgomery is already part of the 5th grade experience at RPDS, it became the natural place to merge theory into practice using the visible thinking routines of Project Zero.

Students began with an open mind, taking notice and documenting what they thought Camp Montgomery needed. Then the shift came as they interviewed a staff member from each department at the camp, creating a mind shift to a user-centered design process. Using empathetic questioning, students came to understand their key stakeholders and their needs, before eventually ideating, testing, and revising elements of their service project ideas. It was that “aha” moment of empathy and understanding that became the heart of the students’ meaningful learning and iterative thinking.

Upon returning to school, the students began designing a service project with the focus on empathy by engaging in research, ideation, building, and implementing during STEAM class. They tweaked the projects through tons of iterations under the watchful guidance of Ms. Knight.

“Innovation involves taking risks and remembering who you are designing for,” says Jan Reeder. “Mistakes, roadblocks, and do-overs are a necessary part of the learning,” says Kelly Knight. “Each time an idea fails, you have the opportunity to think deeper, tweak it, and try something you may have never thought of.” The creative process of deep thinking teaches students to think divergently and to recognize that problems are merely opportunities.

Students were able to experience deep satisfaction when they carried out the service they designed and funded. Yet the real reward was not just the ability to launch a finished prototype; it came with the profound knowledge that comes from collaboratively designing the project themselves.

14 15 As educators, we are tasked with preparing our Global Citizenship students for a future that in the will hold challenges and Preschool Years opportunities we can hardly imagine! And so we ask ourselves continuously, “What skills and attributes will our students need to successfully navigate a world which will likely be even more complex, interconnected, and fast-paced than it is today?”

All of the most current research points to helping children become globally aware, civically engaged, literate, self-directed, open-minded, compassionate individuals with strong critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. That’s quite a charge! No wonder RPDS teachers start laying the foundation for those skills and attributes right from the very start!

PreK 3

For three-year-olds, becoming a global citizen means stretching beyond the safe and familiar pocket of home and family into the bustling neighborhood that surrounds our idyllic campus. Surrounded by several churches and three apartment buildings for the elderly, our location provides our littlest learners with their very first glimpse of the wide and diverse world that awaits them.

One morning, while playing on the preschool playground, one of our students noticed a local resident ambling by, aided by the use of a walker. Struck by this unfamiliar sight, the other students quickly ran over to the fence to observe this scene more closely, and as you can imagine, the questions began to flow.

“Why does he use that thing?”

“Is he hurt?”

“Is he old?”

“Who helps him?”

As teachers, we are always poised to take advantage of “teachable moments,” and this was ours! As a faculty, we had committed ourselves to developing our students’ global competencies. As PreK 3 teachers, we decided that we would meet that goal by helping our students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for our elderly community. We already had a relationship with The Windsor of Ortega and The Riverside House and Apartments. Now we just needed to expand those relationships with more intentional teaching.

16 We used our morning Care & Connect time to explore topics related to aging. We visited the Riverside Apartments at Christmas, singing carols and passing out candy canes to our elderly friends. Later, we were delighted when the residents of Memory Care at The Windsor stuffed beautiful Christmas stockings for all our PreK 3 students. Our conversations continued into the spring, when we decided to hold our Easter party at The Windsor, where we sang, socialized, and had a charming egg hunt with eggs that they had stuffed for us. To finish out the year, we visited our friends at The Riverside Apartments and treated them to a visit from Mr. Al’s Ice Cream Truck. The turnout was astonishing! It appeared that every resident came down to join us for those sweet treats, a reminder that while the decades separate us, there are certainly traditions that bind us all together, including the simple joy of an ice cream cone. When we got back to school that afternoon, Suzanne Tomlinson, former RPDS Headmistress, came to our classroom for a time of Show & Tell. She was wonderful with the children, answering all their questions about the aging process with honesty and humor. She demonstrated exactly how her walker works and how it helps her to remain active. As teachers, we experienced such joy and satisfaction in helping our children to better understand, respect, and appreciate our local elderly community. It felt like the perfect way to introduce our little ones to the wider community around them.

PreK 4 Every year during the Christmas season, the PreK 4 classes enjoy giving presents to immigrant families through Lutheran Social Services’ Caring Tree program. The children are always very curious about the families, especially when they learn that some of the items on their wish lists are quite basic, such as blankets, sweaters, dolls, soccer balls, and books. Many questions arise about immigration and the challenges that come with moving from one side of the world to another.

“How do they learn to speak English?”

“Where do the children go to school?”

“Where do they live?”

“How can we help them?”

This year we made the conscious decision to deepen that relationship by remaining connected with those families throughout the school year! Our very generous parents made contributions that were used to purchase Visa Gift cards, which were given to our families to help them celebrate Valentine’s Day and Ramadan. The children also enjoyed making and decorating cards for them, sharing the RPDS love! It turns out that Global Citizenship starts right here in Jacksonville... in the hearts, hands, and minds of our littlest learners! 17 AROUND THE WORLD PASSPORTS 1st Grade Global Citizenship

RPDS is deeply committed to preparing young minds, hearts, and hands for a life of active, informed, and compassionate global citizenship. With a passion for lifelong learning, our faculty delight in designing opportunities for students to explore the world beyond their front doorsteps, helping them to see the value of safeguarding our Earth’s precious animals and resources and encouraging them to understand and appreciate diverse perspectives, beliefs, and cultures.

Each year, our first grade faculty ignite this mission through our Passports Around the World program. Eager students journey on planes, a cruise ship, gondolas, an express train, and hot air balloons to discover the vast world around them.

Relishing pages in rich cultural books, generating inquisitive questions for guests who live in the countries we visit, designing artwork, tasting culinary treats, and labeling maps to understand geographical landforms are just a few examples of how students are challenged to think about how we are uniquely similar and different from children who live around the world.

Our journey embarks on a flight from the RPDS airport and lands in Brazil, where students learn about the Brazilian culture, including popular activities, sports, games, food, and school routines. We hike through the Amazon Rainforest where students explore the ecosystem of the four layers. We become aware of the value of conservation and sustainability, which is a recurring theme throughout our adventure.

Travelers then board the SS African Queen to cruise to Africa, where we explore Kenya and Egypt. In Kenya, students visit with Maasai children in the savanna, where they observe the brilliant sunset and the five big African animals who gracefully inhabit this beautiful land. Discovering King Tut’s tomb in Egypt is always a highlight.

Gondoliers then paddle 1st grade travelers to Venice, Italy, where they relish the arts, architecture, and lifestyle of Italian families. Painting like Michelangelo and designing cities connects them to Italian artisan history. During science lab, our scientists create telescopes like Galileo.

18 Zooming on the Orient Express our students arrive in China, where they walk on the Great Wall of China, learn the value of conservation while researching pandas, and celebrate the Chinese New Year. Students generate questions for high school Chinese students to inquire how our cultures are similar and different. The dragon parade through the Early Learning Center wraps up our Asian tour.

This year we added a trip to India to our itinerary. Adventurous travelers rode on elephants across the Himalayan Mountains to India, where we tasted delicious Indian fare, including samosas, naan, mango soup and sweet gulab jamun. During STEAM class, our young architects collaborated and constructed the famous Taj Mahal before celebrating the Holi Festival, which is an ancient tradition where friends spread colors to usher in the spring season. Students listened to the traditional legend before tossing brilliant colored powder onto one another to symbolize friendship and social harmony.

For our last visit before returning to the USA our students travel on hot air balloons to Australia in the Southern Hemisphere. Students explore the Outback and the Great Barrier Reef to learn about the unique Austrailan animals. Respecting the Aboriginal culture and land is a theme which resonates in their young minds.

Returning to the good ol’ USA reminds us that we live in a country where our Founding Fathers advocated for our freedom, equality, and independence, values we cherish deeply. Students wrap up our travels by visiting some very special patriotic landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, the White House, and the Liberty Bell.

By the end of their first grade year, our students have traveled to six continents and crossed seven seas, uncovering fascinating cultures and ecosystems. They leave with a deep and abiding appreciation for the vastness and diversity of our little blue planet and a heart for the people who share this space with us. Indeed, as global citizens, they understand that mountains and oceans cannot separate us from our neighbors nor our responsibility to care for our Earth and all its people.

25 2018-19 Advancement

RPDS is grateful for the generosity of the Riverside community during the 2018-19 school year. We celebrate every gift we receive from you, our wonderful parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni families, Business Partners and friends of RPDS.

Thanks to your support, a total of $348,388 was raised through The Promise Fund, Capers, Daily’s Riverside Kids Duathlon and Tot Trot, and the Business Partners Program!

The dollars raised through these events and initiatives are vital to:

Fulfilling our mission to educate the mind, nurture the spirit, and foster the development of the whole child, through dynamic resources and academic curricula that guide every aspect of the educational journey at RPDS.

Bridging the “gap” between what we collect in tuition and the actual cost of a Riverside education. As is true of all independent/private schools, our tuition does not fully cover the cost of educating each child. Every effort is made to keep tuition affordable for our families, which is why participation from all of our constituents at every giving level is so important.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wolf Linda Wolf and The Kunkle Family Bob Sharp Bob Sharp 35 Riverside’s ENDOWMENT FUNDS The Riverside Presbyterian Day school endowment is an aggregation of assets invested by the school to support the school’s educational mission in perpetuity. Annually, the RPDS Endowment Fund supports school operations in two prominent ways: 1) providing need-based financial assistance and 2) supporting faculty and curricular development. All gifts to the Riverside Presbyterian Day School (RPDS) endowment fund are restricted and invested to preserve the corpus of each donation, as well as to ensure that each donor's specific restrictions are honored. In such investing, it is the revenue produced and the appreciation of the fund as a whole that provide support for the operating budget of RPDS.

ENDOWED NAMED Funds These funds provide support for innovation within the instructional curriculum, so that it remains consistent with the finest educational practices nationally. Such funds support the education and professional growth of the faculty, when curricular advancements require retraining.

Beatty Williams William T. & Bible Fund Margery G. Christy Fund This fund provides Bibles for graduating 6th Graders. For Faculty and Curriculum

Coffman Community Fund Suzanne S. Tomlinson in honor of Blanche and Dan Coffman Professional Fund This fund is used for student leadership and outreach in honor of Headmistress Suzanne Tomlinson (1977-94) programs such as Project LEADS and Pathfinders. This fund supports professional development for faculty.

Robert W. Littell H. Palmer Bell Literacy Fund Science & Math Fellowship Fund in honor of Headmaster Robert Littell (1994-2008) in honor of Headmaster Palmer Bell (2008-2017) This fund provides support for the Media Center. This fund supports science and math educators.

ENDOWED NAMED SCHOLARSHIP Funds Each year RPDS provides nearly $350,000 in need-based financial assistance to students enrolled at the school. Although this assistance is one way that we assure the broadest possible access to all aspects of our outstanding educational offerings, each year our funds are exhausted before all documented needs can be met. The following named funds are instrumental in allowing the school to provide confidential assistance tailored to the documented needs of individual families.

Jamie Andrews Harriet Lyons Fund Memorial Scholarship Fund for Children in honor of the life and memory of Jamie Andrews.
