2 Clive Polkinghorne (Extracts from the Mayor’s speech) My mother’s family of Trevaskis goes back over 200 years in Hayle, living at Foundry, East Terrace and St Elwyn’s Place. The Trevaskis’s were heavily involved with the Hayle Harbour and were members of the Hayle Lifeboat, with Edwin and John being coxswains. Many here will remember my uncle Harold. In 1969 I was a police officer in Hayle, my sons attended local schools and I played rugby and cricket for Hayle. It is my home. Eight years ago I joined Hayle Town Council. During my mayorship I would like to see improvements completed to Loggans Mill, the toilets at Hayle Terrace and a direction as to what is happening with Hayle Councillor Steve Benney as Hayle Harbour and the Cranford and Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming Walkers developments. year. Both are well known in the town Hayle is home to many and I would and are keen to get involved with new like to thank everyone who helps to and established initiatives. make the town special. Hayle Open Air Swimming Pool

This year the Hayle Outdoor Swimming Pool season was extended to include the summer half- term holiday and weekends in June. The pool opened on Saturday 26 May 2018 for the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend and the half-term holiday week and then weekends until it opens daily from 23 June 2018. Opening hours are from 11am to 6pm, weather permitting, until Sunday 9 September 2018. We can confirm that entrance prices have not been increased for the sixth year in a row and once again season tickets will be available to purchase. For more information about tickets and events please the website and/or the Hayle Swimming Pool Facebook page. Hayle Neighbourhood Plan Referendum As you know the Neighbourhood Plan referendum took place on 24 May 2018. At the time of going to press we do not know the outcome of the vote but the Council wishes to thank the members of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, comprising councillors and local residents, for their sterling work, time and commitment to get the plan to this stage. The Council is particularly grateful to John Bennett who led the group and kept the project moving and on track. Thank you.

5 Hayle War Memorial Project

The Council has obtained planning consent, had the site transferred and registered, worked up a scheme and most recently appointed a contractor to upgrade the War Memorial. It is anticipated that work will commence in June and be completed before the summer holidays. The idea was to enhance the area, give the memorial more presence and to prevent cars from parking in the surrounding area. The memorial will be cleaned, the lettering repointed and a name will be corrected. Granite cobbles will be laid and some railings installed. All of the work will be completed prior to the centenary which marks the end of the First World War.

HAYLE’S HEROES OF THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 A HUNDRED YEARS ON

Millpond Update

I am very happy to report that after the long wait for our play equipment the fence has come down and the play area is open again just in time for the Easter holidays. We will keep trying to get the Toddlers’ little blue duck back again. It was always one of their favourite pieces. Also a big thank you to the kind person who put back the turtles basking log. It could perhaps do with being 9 slightly less steep but they can still use it which is the important thing. It would be good if we could find them another one so that more of them could bask and enjoy the summer sun. We still have about fifteen ducks left on the pond. Ky, our Cayuga, is still with us. He is still a colourful character and I am sure that we will be blessed by a few more, so we keep our fingers crossed. The along the Rope Walk and the yellow happiest additions to our family are dead-nettle has also survived. This five ducklings. Spring took a long time coming, but it was worth the wait. The wayside hedgerows have been glorious, awash with primroses, violets, and many other wild flowers and plants. Sloe blossom (Blackthorn) was particularly exuberant. I enjoy early morning walks around Copperhouse Pool with my dog, taking in the scents, sounds and sights of a new day. One morning, three pure white little egrets flew elegantly over my head, silent and graceful, and catching the first rays of sunlight. A beautiful sight! Many of the wintering birds have flown away to Greenland, Iceland and Scandinavia, but new passage birds like whimbrel arrive every day. A beautiful pair of shelduck (Britain’s largest duck) can often be seen at Copperhouse and I suspect they may be sitting on a nest nearby. With luck we will see ducklings soon enough. Walking at Ryan's Field, near the bird hide, I was intrigued to see that the many dog poops (sadly left by irresponsible owners) had been 11 sprayed with orange paint. The mystery was solved on a further visit, when I met a man, proudly wearing a RSPB sweatshirt, and picking litter. This was Stephen Jackson, who has recently joined up as a volunteer. I asked him if he could explain orange poohs. He told me they need to strim the paths, and strimming dog pooh is very unpleasant! I’m sure we can empathise! Stephen will be leading litterpick groups around the nature reserve in the near future. On the subject of litter, I have noticed that the dropping of litter becomes more and more common at great detriment to our wildlife and our environment. Please help our town reduce this problem by disposing of your rubbish responsibly and maybe join in with the many organized litterpicks about town this summer. Until next time, Tina Morgan

Hayle in Bloom June/July

Spring has finally sprung and plants are flourishing in the increased warmth and daylight. Within Hayle in Bloom (H.I.B.) our attention is now being targeted towards this year’s South West in Bloom competition. Because of our success last year, we are entered into the Champion of Champions competition this year. 12 First judging is confirmed for the first week of July, the second judging for the 26th July, and they will be carried out by the Chair of SW in Bloom in person. What sets Hayle apart, as always, will be the community spirit in evidence in our town, and this is always commented on by judges. We would therefore like to encourage all Hayle residents to beautify their gardens, and all pubs, businesses and private residences to consider entering the Hayle Cup competitions to be judged in the last week in July. Within the ‘In Your Neighbourhood ‘ competition (I.Y.N.) this year will be familiar entries such as the Isis gardens and the allotments, and these will be joined by the Swimming Pool/Bouledrome, St Mary’s Gardens and all the best gardens in town. This competition will be judged in the first week of July. Finally, we would encourage you to bring unwanted metal watering cans to either the greenhouse on King George V Walk, or the Chairman at 3, Commercial Road. Happy gardening every one! — PLEASE SUPPORT — — LOCAL BUSINESSES —

The first two beach cleans of the season have gone really well. Twenty-four volunteers collected 6 bin bags of rubbish at Toms’ Holidays in April on a chilly day. At St Ives Bay Holiday Park we had 14 volunteers visit the wide open spaces in the middle of the bay, surely one of the most beautiful spots in Cornwall. A very welcome hot drink and cake afterwards was much appreciated. Many thanks to the camp owners for their support and especially to our volunteers, hope to see as many friends old and new at Haven (part of their long-standing ‘Big Green Weekend’) on Saturday 23rd June at 11am, and Beachside on Sunday 8th July at 10am. Hayle Twinning

Well here we are into our 21st year. Our fund raising is going well, started off by a very good Wine & Cheese & Auction at Neil and Maureen’s house. They had collected 20 great items that were donated by businesses throughout Hayle. Paradise Park, Penwith Pitch & Putt, Hayle Golf Club, The Cornish Arms, Hampson Butchers, Sharky's fish & chips, Scarlett Wines, Antonini's Italian Restaurant, Salt Bar, Hayle hand car wash, and Wyvale Garden Centre. Two paintings were also donated by Jenny Butterworth and Perranporth artist and glass designer Sue Ayres. Three members also auctioned their expertise - Emma her chiropody services, Gill her wonderful cake making delights and Mandy her gardening expertise. So a big thank you to everyone. Our friends from Pordic arrived on Wednesday 9th May, On the Thursday the programme was to go to Falmouth to view the statue of St Piran and then onto Perran Sands to the oratory. We missed the statue because it had left Falmouth to go to St,Mawes and then onto Mevagissey though as the French said “ No problem we will see it when we go over in August”. It is a part of the Pordic programme that has been arranged - a trip to the valley of the Saints, St. Piran being the one hundredth

21 Friday night at Hayle Rugby Club was a night to remember. It started with a welcoming speech by the chairman, then Michelle Poulton, vice president of Pordic Twinning responded. The new mayor and mayoress, Clive and Susan Polkinghorne who were at their first official engagement welcomed our visitors to Hayle. The buffet was excellent and plentiful, and all that was left over was donated to the homeless. The disco that followed rounded off a lovely evening. The D.J. Joe Atkins worked wonders – he even had the youngsters dancing to the very good music of days gone by. Saturday there was an arranged outing to Healey's cider farm after which it was the time that comes around too quickly - the time to meet at the rugby club for the goodbyes and the departure. We now look forward to our trip in August. Our shopping trip to Clark’s village was well supported as was our fish and chip night at Sharky's. If in the near future you should see us having a game of boules at our playing pitch near Hayle Swimming Pool on a

Hayle Film Club's summer programme continues with two indie hits plus two foreign-language films. On Saturday 9th June we'll present the multi-award-winning (Oscars and Baftas) THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, where a grieving mother and inept police go to war over an unsolved murder case. R.N.L.I. The Hayle Branch of the RNLI held their Annual General Meeting on 18th April at the Lifeguard Support Centre in Hayle. Despite being a small group, we once again had a very successful year of 24 fundraising, raising £11,217.60 for the RNLI at various venues and events in and around Hayle over the past year. As always, the money will be used by the RNLI to save lives at sea and to safeguard members of the public on our beautiful beaches. We meet on the second Wednesday evening of the month, from February until November, at the RNLI Lifeguard Support Centre in the industrial park behind M&S. New members are always welcome and we would love you to come along to see what we do and bring any ideas you may have to help raise funds for this very worthwhile cause! One From Barry...... A teddy bear is working on a building site. He goes for a tea break and when he returns he notices his pick has been stolen. The bear is angry and reports the theft to the foreman. The foreman grins at the bear and says "Oh, I forgot to tell you, today's the day the teddy bears have their pick nicked." 25 Hayle Guitar club We had a good couple of months with the programme, the open mike session was a great success with everybody coming out with their favourite songs and hearing everybody else's renditions. You learn such a lot by playing in front of non-critical friends and having fun playing your guitar and having a go prepares without any stress to play in front of anybody. Talking about that takes me to one side to mention that every other week on Tuesday nights there is an easy listening and folk type guitar meeting at the Smugglers. So, if you have a few songs that you would like to sing give this one a try. We went up from the club and really enjoyed ourselves. There were some great players and singers and I believe there is a similar night on Fridays at the Cornish Arms in Hayle so if you are contemplating (I've got to sit down, that was too big a word for me) trying an open mike night or joining in any group thing, come on down and rehearse your songs down here without the stress. The proposed sessions for June and

26 July, we'll have an open mike night around the 13th of June and also on the 11th of July and a Blues night on the 18th of July. None of these are cast in stone. If someone wants to try something else then we have a go, whether you have an acoustic or electric guitar you are welcome, as long as you can keep the volume under control. On the news front, the Rock band, the offshoot from the club, are playing at the Lions charity afternoon on Hayle Playing field on the 12th of August. The group 'Not Yet' featuring Dave Cupples and Dave Ledbury are entertaining the folks that go to the Day centre a couple of times a month. Dave Twigg who comes down to give us a few songs and Brian are playing at the White Hart on every other Sunday afternoon with Graham on lead guitar, something good to hear for the weekend. If you are having lessons and want to improve by playing with others or if you are a retired band or a group musician and want to get back into playing again, come on down and give it a go. Dave with the hat. 07732754394

Phone Box at the Passmore Edwards Institute

In the last Pump we asked for ideas on what to do with our old phone box. We had quite a few responses including some interesting and original ideas. Thank you very much for all of you who offered ideas. Our committee discussed the suggestions, taking into account the difficulty of implementation, cost and potential vandalism, and voted to go with the idea of restoring the box to an historically accurate copy. This would include an old phone with A and B buttons (remember those?), old phone books, historic business cards poked into the edge of the mirror, etc. Once restored, we can lock the door

28 to reduce the risk of damage or theft. So, if any reader has any old phone equipment that we could use, will you please contact me. John Bennett, Treasurer, PEI. [email protected]. 753184.

Hen keeping is on the rise and it’s not difficult to see why. Ex-bats in particular make wonderful pets and are great company, each with their own distinct personalities. The British Hen Welfare Trust re-homes hens,

34 both free range and caged, that would otherwise go to slaughter at 72 weeks old. The local team, based in , holds re-homings roughly every 6 to 8 weeks. Since the team was set up in April 2016 it has found homes across West and North Cornwall for 4,000 hens. Once you have kept ex-bats you will never want to be without them. Seeing a hen fresh out of her cage enjoying the sunshine, scratching for bugs and slugs and dust bathing is one of life’s pure joys. Although they may be looking a little tatty at first, after a pedicure and a few days of fresh air they will start to grow their new feathers and become real characters. The added extra is that you will be provided with free range eggs for breakfast! If you would like to re-home some hens please contact www.bhwt.org.uk or 01884 860084. Loggans Mill Come along to Hayle Heritage Centre on the 13th of June at 6.30pm for a fascinating talk on Loggans Mill by Philip Hosken. This talk will look at the development of the Mill and the HTP Company, it will feature original photos and be ahead of the launch of Philip’s new book. Tickets limited to 20 people and they are £3 each. You can pre-order them by calling 01736 757638.

36 Rick Rescorla The personal story by Mervyn Sullivan Continued from last issue. The last time I saw Rick, before his untimely death, was when I drove him back to Penzance railway station after a home visit. It was 5 o’clock in the morning and as the train was about to pull away he stood in the open doorway, raised his huge arm with a clenched fist, his challenging pose, and shouted at the top of his voice.. Here in Hayle there is a large granite and bronze memorial to him on Penpol Terrace, opposite to the house where he was born, and his name will be remembered forever, as the have honoured him by naming one of their new high speed trains after him. Also the unveiling ceremony of his name is to take place at Hayle station later this year. An amazing man – amazing life. Hayle and Cornwall are proud of you Cyril Richard Rescorla. Goodbye my friend, Kernow Bys Vyken. Sully – Mervyn Sullivan I would like to say a special “thank you” to the Pump team for giving me so much space in this publication to tell my memories of my friendship with Rick Rescorla. I am sure that all of his family and friends, namely John & Sally Daniels, Chris & Margaret Stumbles, Anthony & Helen Bawden, Paul & Sue Hurrell, Elizabeth Honess (neé Wills) and so many others could give you so many interesting stories about Rick. A truly amazing friend to so many local Hayle people. Thank you again, Mervyn M Sullivan. The Hayle Pump wishes to thank Mervyn for this series of articles about Rick, we have had a lot of positive comments.
