Savage 1 “Who’s gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It’s chocolate, it’s peppermint ─it’s delicious!” While this may sound like your typical television commercial, you can thank Jerry Seinfeld and his butter fingers for what is actually one of the most renowned lines in television history. As part of a 1993 episode of Seinfeld , subsequently known as “The Junior Mint,” these infamous words have certainly gained a bit more attention than the show’s writers had originally bargained for. In fact, those of you who were annoyed by last year’s focus on a McDonald’s McFlurry on NBC’s 30 Rock may want to take up your beef with Seinfeld’s producers for supposedly showing marketers the way to the future ("Brand Practice: Product Integration Is as Old as Hollywood Itself"). -

This book was first published in 1951 by Little, Brown and Company. THE CATCHER IN THE RYE By J.D. Salinger © 1951 CHAPTER 1 If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, an what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them. They're quite touchy about anything like that, especially my father. They're nice and all--I'm not saying that--but they're also touchy as hell. Besides, I'm not going to tell you my whole goddam autobiography or anything. I'll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me around last Christmas just before I got pretty run-down and had to come out here and take it easy. I mean that's all I told D.B. about, and he's my brother and all. He's in Hollywood. That isn't too far from this crumby place, and he comes over and visits me practically every week end. He's going to drive me home when I go home next month maybe. He just got a Jaguar. One of those little English jobs that can do around two hundred miles an hour. -

EPISODE 181: THE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MEETING WHICHWHICH SEINFELDSEINFELD CHARACTERCHARACTER AREARE YOU?YOU? In our business dealings, we are often guilty of just not listening. We come to the table with an agenda—a new product, a new service—and wait while a prospect or existing client tells us what’s going on with his or her business. At some point, that person will pause—and we pounce with our spiel. This approach rarely works - successful business development requires some level of rapport and relationship building. In order to adapt quickly and improvise in these instances, it’s helpful to understand people’s communication and personality styles. Influence and steadiness are on the right side of the brain, and dominance and conscientiousness are on the left side. Understanding someone’s dominant quadrant can help you find a way to work more effectively with them. Laughing out Loud: Taking a Stand on Standup for the ESL Student Kathy Zimbaldi Westside High School INTRODUCTION I Am a Seconda
Laughing Out Loud: Taking a Stand on Standup for the ESL Student Kathy Zimbaldi Westside High School INTRODUCTION I am a secondary ESL teacher at Westside High School in HISD. I teach 10th, 11th, and 12th grade classes of Advanced and Transitional students, and my class populations are extremely diverse both culturally and linguistically. While many students are native Spanish speakers, most are from South America rather than Mexico. And while some of my Asian students are Chinese or Vietnamese, others are from Thailand, Bangladesh, or India. The native Arab speakers are from Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine, while the African ESL students are from Angola, Cameroon, or Nigeria. Unlike my previous ESL teaching experiences with 100% Mexican populations, my Westside High classroom is a mini-United Nations! While my own learning curve is steep as I seek to meet the needs of this very diverse group, I still try hard to maintain an atmosphere that keeps the affective filter low as my students struggle to learn in a second language. My goal is to promote a stress-free zone that encourages risk- taking; if we are to make steady progress toward language proficiency, then students must be comfortable manipulating that language. I choose to teach with a generous level of flexibility in the ESL curriculum, and I am fortunate to have the full support of my principal in this regard. Like Robin Williams’ students in Good Morning Vietnam or Bill Murray’s in Stripes, my students seem to appreciate any efforts I make to engage and entertain them as we tackle the more daunting lessons in English language learning. -
Drew Carey Jumps to Top of List As the Nation's Favorite
The Harris Poll A Service of Harris Interactive THE HARRIS POLL #75 FOR RELEASE: DECEMBER 15, 1999 DREW CAREY JUMPS TO TOP OF LIST AS THE NATION’S FAVORITE TV PERSONALITY He moves ahead of Oprah Winfrey (#2), Bill Cosby (#3), Jerry Seinfeld (#4) and Kelsey Grammar (#5). _____________________________________________________ by Humphrey Taylor While primetime game shows such as Greed and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire seem to be captivating America these days, the stars of sitcoms and talk shows are most popular. Drew Carey tops the list of the nation’s favorite TV personalities, and Oprah Winfrey ranks a close second. These are the results of a Harris Poll of 1,011 adults surveyed by telephone between October 27 and November 2, 1999. Both sitcoms and talk shows provide America with a comforting diversion from reality. Both also offer well-publicized celebrities. This may explain why stars of these shows, and only these shows, comprise the list of America’s top 10 TV stars. While Drew Carey is #1, he is followed by several of his sitcom colleagues: Bill Cosby (#3), Jerry Seinfeld (#4), Kelsey Grammer (#5), Jennifer Aniston (#6), Tim Allen (#7), and Helen Hunt (#9). Interestingly, no stars from television’s most popular dramas such as Touched by an Angel or Law and Order rank anywhere on the list. Harris Interactive Inc. 111 Fifth Avenue NYC (212) 539-9600 In addition, the stars of TV talk shows, while rumored to be on the decline, capture several of the top spots: Oprah Winfrey (#2), Rosie O’Donnell (#8), Jerry Springer and Johnny Carson (tied for #10). -

Journal of Forensic & Investigative Accounting Volume 8
Journal of Forensic & Investigative Accounting Volume 8: Issue 1, January–June, 2016 Foxes in the Henhouse: An Exploratory Inquiry into Financial Markets Fraud Joseph Wall Timothy J. Fogarty* Introduction The study of fraud represents a tantalizing horizon for accounting research. Fraud costs businesses, investors and ordinary people incalculable sums, and therefore a motivation for its study is obvious on a practical level. More theoretically, fraud mitigation remains central in the justification for internal control implementation, auditing effort, and regulatory design. Despite its immense potential, fraud research has not made major strides as a stand-alone academic area. The literature has remained heavily dependent upon anecdotal accounts. Most of these are autopsies that seek to do no more than describe in detail how specific frauds were perpetrated. Studied in this manner, fraud remains an exotic and episodic event, about which very little systematic evidence has accumulated. A great unrecognized need exists in evaluating contexts where fraud happens on a somewhat regular basis. In other words, although fraud may happen anywhere, we need to study those places where it is so regularized as to be arguably a way of life. Fraud also has been theoretically impoverished. The majority of the conceptions offered depend upon the early conception of the fraud triangle. This formulation suggests that fraud thrives where: (1) opportunity to divert assets exists; (2) where the perpetrator possesses the unusual incentives to engage in a criminal act; and (3) where perpetrators are able to rationalize their behavior as less deviant than it appears to be. The confluence of these circumstances, being formed retrospectively, is believed to further the sufficiency of the theory. -
