A Definition of olklorF e: A Personal Narrative Abstract My definition of folklore as "artistic communication in small groups" was forged in the context of folklore studies of the 1960s, in the discontent with the definitions that were current at the time, and under the influence of anthropology, linguistics - particularly 'the ethnography of speaking' - and Russian formalism. My field esearr ch among the Edo people of Nigeria had a formative impact upon my conception of folklore, when I observed their storytellers, singers, dancers and diviners in performance. Pilot Season by Kelly Cousineau An undergraduate honorsrequirements thesis submitted for the degree in partial of fulfillment of the Bachelor of Arts in University Honors and Film Thesis Adviser William Tate Portland State University 2014 Abstract In the 1930s, two historical figures pioneered the cinematic movement into color technology and theory: Technicolor CEO Herbert Kalmus and Color Director Natalie Kalmus. Through strict licensing policies and creative branding, the husband-and-wife duo led Technicolor in the aesthetic revolution of colorizing Hollywood. However, Technicolor's enormous success, beginning in 1938 with The Wizard of Oz, followed decades of duress on the company. Studios had been reluctant to adopt color due to its high costs and Natalie's commanding presence on set represented a threat to those within the industry who demanded creative license. The discrimination that Natalie faced, while undoubtedly linked to her gender, was more systemically linked to her symbolic representation of Technicolor itself and its transformation of the industry from one based on black-and-white photography to a highly sanctioned world of color photography. -

Re-Visioning Personal Myths In Executive Coaching Abstract The purpose of this capstone is to study how executive coaches use stories to help their clients author a more empowering personal myth, in support of the client’s long- term vision that accounts for diverse personal and professional stakeholders. Through a multidisciplinary review of literature, the study enunciates how people create personal myths to make sense of their lives and why those invisible myths need to be continuously updated to account for life changes. The review of organizational research emphasizes the importance of choosing an archetype that supports a desired social identity at work. Following interviews with experienced coach practitioners, the study outlines a process by which coaches can ask for stories that not only help clients change but also lay the foundation of the deeper work clients need to do to articulate and realize their future vision. -

A GAY/STRAIGHT COMPARISON OF GAY VOICES A RESEARCH PAPER SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS BY SHANE LANNING DR. CAROLYN MACKAY - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2015 Lanning-1 Introduction: This study compares 4 gay male comedians and 4 straight male comedians’ performances of “gay speech”. The researcher observed comedians who were performing gay characters for the following three variables: the lisp ([s̪ ] instead of [s]), a raised pitch, and formal [–iŋ] vs. informal [–In] endings. It was hypothesized that both straight comedians and gay comedians would manipulate their [s] production to the dental [s̪ ] when performing a gay character; moreover, the comedians would also raise their pitch during their performance. The [–iŋ] vs. [–In] sounds, because their production below the level of consciousness, would not vary in the homosexual or heterosexual comedians. The purpose of this comparison was to determine how salient the features were in each group in order to identify stereotypical features associated with gay speech. In other words, if all of the comedians were using a particular feature, one could postulate that this feature has a stronger association with perceived gay speakers. Conversely, if the comedians were not using a particular feature, one could postulate that this feature has a weaker association or is not associated at all with perceived gay speakers. In recent studies, participants were asked to rate speakers on a scale of homosexual to heterosexual and a scale of feminine to masculine. In these studies, the data showed that features like the lisp ([s̪ ] instead of [s]), received higher gay ratings; participants rated speakers’ sexuality as gay more often when they exhibited this feature (Mack & Munson, 2012). -

We come to the table with an agenda—a new product, a new service—and wait while a prospect or existing client tells us what’s going on with his or her business. At some point, that person will pause—and we pounce with our spiel. This approach rarely works - successful business development requires some level of rapport and relationship building. As in all aspects of life, this can mean dealing with those who may not share your views or approach. In order to adapt quickly and improvise in these instances, it’s helpful to understand people’s communication and personality styles. There are a number of tests that can help us understand the personality and communication styles of others, including the popular DISC model. This model has four quadrants: dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness. Influence and steadiness are on the right side of the brain, and dominance and conscientiousness are on the left side. Understanding someone’s dominant quadrant can help you find a way to work more effectively with them. UNDERSTANDING WHAT SEINFELD YOUR SITCOM CAST Now that you understand where you fall QUADRANT ARE YOU? within the quadrants, you can begin to think about how to work and respond to any cast of characters you may come I’ll let you in on an interesting tidbit, successful sitcoms often across. European Journal of Humour Research 5 (3) 108–111 www.europeanjournalofhumour.org Book review Quirk, S. (2015). Why Stand-Up Comedy Matters. How Comedians Manipulate and Influence. London and New York: Bloomsbury. 248 pages. As the title and introduction explain, Sophie Quirk’s monograph sets out to investigate the reasons and ways comedians manipulate and influence their audience. The term manipulation, however, should be considered apart from its often negative connotations and should be interpreted as the comedian’s attempt to skilfully communicate with their audience, elicit laughter, and, most importantly in this case, influence their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour (see p. 2). With these premises, Quirk explores instances of stand-up comedy including some interaction between mainly well-known British comedians (e.g. Eddie Izzard, Stewart Lee, Josie Long) and their audience. She also interviews some of these performers so as to gain a first-hand understanding of the comedians’ performing experience. The book is divided into three main sections, which are well balanced in terms of structural organisation of the topic at hand. Part I comprises of two chapters in which Quirk explains how comedians manipulate and control their audience by, for instance, eliciting laughter at the right time. Drawing on Schopenhauer (1987), Freud (1957), and Douglas (1999), Quirk provides a sound overview of joking in relation to laughter, superiority, relief, incongruity, and challenge. She concludes that: Joking is always part of an ongoing negotiation through which current thought and practices are challenged and tested. Some challenges are gentle and leave their targets in tact [sic]; others are dangerous. -

Once upon a time before words were written, before cultures and societies were observed and analyzed there was storytelling. Storytelling has been a part of humanity since people were able to communicate and respond to the basic biological urge to explain, educate and enlighten. Cave drawings, traditional dances, poems, songs, and chants are all examples of early storytelling. Stories pass on historical, cultural, and moral information and provide escape and relief from the everyday struggle to survive. Storytelling takes place in all cultures in a variety of different forms. Studying these forms requires an interdisciplinary approach involving anthropology, psychology, linguistics, history, library science, theater, media studies and other related disciplines. New technologies and new approaches have brought about a renewed interest in the varied aspects and elements of storytelling, broadening our understanding and appreciation of its complexity. What is Storytelling? Defining storytelling is not a simple matter. Scholars from a variety of disciplines, professional and amateur storytellers, and members of the communities where the stories dwell have not come to a consensus on what defines storytelling. -
