For if the first and foremost thing in Consecration is this, that the creature's love should be given in return for the love of the Creator, another thing follows from this at once, namely that to the same uncreated Love, if so be it has been neglected by forgetfulness or violated by offense, some sort of compensation must be rendered for the injury, and this debt is commonly called by the name of reparation. Haurietis Aquas 1956 When so many evils meet Our gaze - such as cause sharp conflict among individuals, families, nations and the whole world, particularly today more than at any other time - where are We to seek a remedy, venerable brethren? Can a form of devotion surpassing that to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus be found, which corresponds better to the essential character of the Catholic faith, which is more capable of assisting the present-day needs of the Church and the human race? What religious practice is more excellent, more attractive, more salutary than this, since the devotion in question is entirely directed towards the love of God itself? Finally, what more effectively than the love of Christ - which devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus daily increases and fosters more and more - can move the faithful to bring into the activities of life the Law of the Gospel, the setting aside of which, as the words of the Holy Spirit plainly warn, "the work of justice shall be peace," makes peace worthy of the name completely impossible among men? Letter on the Fiftieth Anniversary of Haurietis Aquas, Benedict XVI 2006 Since God revealed himself most profoundly in the Incarnation of his Son in whom he made himself "visible", it is in our relationship with Christ that we can recognize who God really is. And again: since the deepest expression of God's love is found in the gift Christ made of his life for us on the Cross, the deepest expression of God's love, it is above all by looking at his suffering and his death that we can see God's infinite love for us more and more clearly: "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (Jn 3: 16). When we practise this devotion, not only do we recognize God's love with gratitude but we continue to open ourselves to this love so that our lives are ever more closely patterned upon it. God, who poured out his love "into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us" (cf. Rom 5: 5), invites us tirelessly to accept his love. The main aim of the invitation to give ourselves entirely to the saving love of Christ and to consecrate ourselves to it is, consequently, to bring about our relationship with God. Whoever inwardly accepts God is moulded by him. The experience of God's love should be lived by men and women as a "calling" to which they must respond. Fixing our gaze on the Lord, who "took our infirmities and bore our diseases" (Mt 8: 17), helps us to become more attentive to the suffering and need of others. It enables us to entrust ourselves to his saving and merciful love, and at the same time strengthens us in the desire to take part in his work of salvation, becoming his instruments. The experience of love, brought by the devotion to the pierced side of the Redeemer, protects us from the risk of withdrawing into ourselves and makes us readier to live for others. So it is that the cult of love, which becomes visible in the mystery of the Cross presented anew in every celebration of the Eucharist, lays the foundations of our capacity to love and to make a gift of ourselves, becoming instruments in Christ's hands: only in this way can we be credible proclaimers of his love. Prayers There are two prayers given in the Missal, of which either can be chosen. Prayer A is derived from a collect in use in some French dioceses before the 1850s; prayer B is the same as the chosen for the feast in 1856. The 100th anniversary of the Consecration of the Human Race to the Divine Heart of Jesus, prescribed for the whole Church by my Predecessor Leo XIII in the Encyclical Letter Annum sacrum (25 May 1899: Leonis XIII P. M. Acta, XIX [1899], 71- 80) and carried out on 11 June 1899, prompts us first of all to give thanks to "him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father" (Rv 1:5-6). This happy occasion seems a particularly appropriate one for reflecting on the meaning and value of that important ecclesial act. With the Encyclical Annum sacrum, Pope Leo XIII confirmed all that had been done by his Predecessors carefully to preserve and highlight the devotion and spirituality of the Sacred Heart. With that consecration he wished to obtain "extraordinary benefits first for Christianity, but also for the whole human race" (Annum sacrum, p. 71).     Entry into the Sacred Heart is for Everyone March 2009 Dear Friends of the Heart of Christ, There is a scene in The Passion of the Christ movie that gives me much thought for this Lenten Sacred Heart reflection. On Mount Calvary at the time when Jesus dies for us, one of the soldiers present takes his long spear and thrusts it into the ribs of Christ-aiming right for his heart. Jesus seems to have expired and this will not leave any doubt. Gathering storm clouds urge him on for he does not want to be caught in the violent winds and rains that have begun to pelt him. Recall the characters played by the soldiers and the terrible sufferings they wreck on Jesus. They are portrayed as heartless, mocking, crude, there to do a job and be over with it. Inflicting suffering on others makes them feel powerful, in control, dominant. As the centurion takes his long, steel-tipped spear and jabs it into the flesh of the dead Christ, a stream of blood and water literally flies out at him spurting over him into his face and eyes. In an instant he is changed. He is no longer the arrogant, jesting, hard-hearted person he was but is transformed both physically and spiritually. He thus proclaims, “In truth this man was the Son of God.” Tradition has named this soldier Longinus-a latinized form of the Greek word longche which means spear. A statue of him as Saint Longinus appears in the Vatican by the famous artist Bernini.

Is this just a mawkish form of devotion overemphasizing God’s love? That is at least how many Jansenists chose to understand it, but nothing could be further from the truth. Nos ergo diligamus Deum, quoniam ipse prior dilexit nos (I Jn. IV, 19). Let us therefore love God because God first hath loved us. To return love for love: this is the key to understanding devotion to the Sacred Heart.     THE THEOLOGY OF THE DOCTRINE OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY INTRODUCTION THE purpose of this paper is to present some theological aspects of the cult of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The timeliness of the subject can be evaluated in the light of three important facts. (1) The apparitions of Fatima (1917) in which Our Lady requested world wide devotion to her Immaculate Heart. (2) The solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by Pope Pius XII on October 31, 1942, commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of of the apparitions of Fatima. The same year, on December 8, the Sovereign Pontiff publicly renewed the Act of Consecration in the Basilica of St. Peter. (3) The institution of the universal feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to be celebrated each year on the Octave day of the Assumption, August 22, as a double of the second class. This feast is to be a reminder of the solemn Act of Consecra- tion. Commenting on the unprecedented action of the Holy Father, His Eminence Cardinal Cerejeira, Patriarch of Lisbon, said: "This opens a new era in Christian spirituality—the era of the Immaculate Heart of Mary." 1 We shall divide our paper into two major parts. St. Mary's College BACKGROUND OF THE ENCYCLICAL N THE new Encyclical on the Sacred Heart, our present Holy Father I tells us that this devotion is the most complete profession of the Christian religion.1 Before him, Pius XI had stated that this same devotion was the synthesis of our whole religion and the norm of the more perfect life.2 Both Supreme Pontiffs but reaffirmed Leo XIIFs words that this devotion was the most excellent form of religion.3 One would think, then, that a form of devotion so praised by the highest doctrinal authority on earth would be held in great esteem by all Catholics, clergy and laity alike. But, according to some European writers, such has not been the case, at least in certain countries.4 Julien Jacques informs us that, at the time of his writing, there were many priests in his native land, both of the diocesan and regular clergy, who showed a distant and reserved, even slightly disdainful, attitude towards the devotion to the Sacred Heart. While observing the pre­ cepts of the Church, such as Leo XIIFs Consecration to the Sacred Heart and the Act of Reparation of Pius XI, together with devotions on the first Fridays and on the feast day itself, they nevertheless failed to realize the full significance of the devotion to the Sacred Heart in 1A AS 48 (1956) 344: "absolutissima . professio religionis."
