POPE BENEDICT XVI MESSAGE FOR WORLD DAY OF THE SICK 2011 ‘By his wounds you have been healed’ (1 Pt 2:24) Dear Brothers and Sisters! Every year, on the day of the memorial of the Blessed Virgin of Lourdes, which is celebrated on 11 February, the Church proposes the World Day of the Sick. This event, as the venerable John Paul II wanted, becomes a propitious occasion to reflect upon the mystery of suffering and above all to make our communities and civil society more sensitive to our sick brothers and sisters. If every man is our brother, much more must the sick, the suffering and those in need of care be, at the centre of our attention, so that none of them feels forgotten or emarginated; indeed, ‘the true measure of humanity is essentially determined in relationship to suffering and to the sufferer. This holds true both for the individual and for society. A society unable to accept its suffering members and incapable of helping to share their suffering and to bear it inwardly through “com-passion” is a cruel and inhuman society’ (Encyclical letter Spe salvi, n. 38). The initiatives that will be organised in each diocese on the occasion of this Day should be a stimulus to make care for the suffering increasingly effective, also in view of the solemn celebration that will take place in 2013 at the Marian sanctuary of Altötting in Germany. 1. Witnessing Our Faith : TCDSB Principal Experiences at WYD Madrid 2011 Many have asked me why I would choose to spend two weeks of my summer break with teenagers especially since I am the principal of a large Catholic secondary school. My answer is always a resounding “why not?” I was privileged to travel with the St. John the Evangelist youth group to Madrid World Youth Day 2011. This was my third pilgrimage with a group of young people from my parish, previously attending WYD Cologne 2005 and WYD Sydney 2008.The pilgrimage experience continues to reaffirm my own faith and mission as a Catholic educator. It is hard to describe the exhilaration I feel when I am amongst 2 million youth from all over the world who have come together to celebrate our faith through prayer, song and dance. We began our WYD pilgrimage by spending four days in Rome. One of the highlights was a day that started very early at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Here a chapel had been reserved for us beneath the Vatican near St Peter’s tomb so we could gather and celebrate Mass as a group with our pastor Fr. Michael McGourty. After Mass we visited the tomb of Blessed John Paul II who initiated World Youth Day. From Rome we travelled on to Spain. We started our time in Spain by visiting Avila, the birth place of St. Theresa of Avila. We then travelled to Toledo visiting the Cathedral of Spain’s Primate and celebrated Mass with the Archbishop of Toledo.

Decision to follow Christ requires support from others, pope says VATICAN CITY – The decision to follow Christ is not an easy one to make, so young people should look for support from the Christian community and the church, Pope Benedict XVI said in his message for World Youth Day 2011. “Do not believe those who tell you that you don’t need others to build up your life! Find support in the faith of those who are dear to you, in the faith of the church,” the pope wrote in his message, released Sept. 3. Pope Benedict called on all young people, even those who are no longer active members of the church as well as nonbelievers, to attend the World Youth Day celebrations in Madrid Aug. 16-21, 2011. He said the international gathering offers people a powerful experience of Jesus Christ and his love for everyone. “The decision to believe in Jesus Christ and to follow him is not an easy one. It is hindered by our personal failures and by the many voices that point us toward easier paths,” he said. The pope urged youths to not be discouraged and to look for the support of the Christian community and the church. The theme of World Youth Day 2011 is: “Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.” The pope struck a very personal tone in his written message, relaying some of his own dreams and worries from his youth. When they were young, he said he and his friends “were not willing to settle for a conventional middle-class life.” Growing up during the Nazi dictatorship and the Second World War definitely contributed to their youthful ambitions of breaking free from the reigning power structures and to “experience the whole range of human possibilities,” he said.

McFadden will celebrate a Mass on Sunday, July 17 with the 225 local pilgrims from the Diocese of Harrisburg that are preparing for World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, Spain. The Mass will be held at Noon at St. Theresa Parish, 1300 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, PA. Bishop McFadden, who will also attend World Youth Day in August, will be the celebrant and deliver the homily at the Mass. Following the Mass, the pilgrims will walk to Boro Park in New Cumberland for a picnic with their families and Bishop McFadden. During the walk the pilgrims will be reciting the rosary in Spanish as they make the pilgrimage to the park. The Mass serves as an opportunity for the local pilgrims to gather together as they begin their final spiritual preparations for the trip to World Youth Day. The pilgrims will depart on their pilgrimage on August 10 and return to the United States on August 22. The Mass with Bishop McFadden will take place exactly 5 weeks prior to the World Youth Day closing Mass to be celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI in Madrid, Spain. Eleven local pilgrims will serve as Media Correspondents for the Diocese of Harrisburg for World Youth Day. These youth from high school thru college age will be sharing their personal experiences of their spiritual journey via the diocese’s Facebook and YouTube pages, and via a blog.

Dear brothers in Christ Crucified and Risen, Fraternal greetings and best wishes to all of you here and, in particular, to each of you who, with various titles and responsibilities, are participating in this Synod. I especially wish to greet and welcome those of you who have recently been elected as Major Superiors and who are at a Synod assembly for the first time. You will enrich us with your creativity and enthusiasm. I also greet all of you in the name of the General Council and the community of Sts. John and Paul that offers us hospitality for the celebration of the XIV Synod of the Congregation. I welcome you and through you, with heart and mind, I see and remember all the religious of our communities and the laity of the Passionist Family who, as laborers called to the vineyard of the Lord, live and work in sixty countries. I especially wish to remember the sick and those who suffer in spirit: may the Lord bless them and may our spiritual and human concern comfort them. I ask the men and women religious and laity to accompany us with their prayer so that the Synod may be a grace-filled event that enlightens our mind, so that we may discern the ways of the Lord for the Congregation today.
