  • Descendants of Gregory Bonnifield (1726-1794)
DESCENDANTS OF GREGORY BONNIFIELD (1726-1794) Compiled by C. J. MAXWELL DALLAS, TEXAS 1949 Lithoprinted from Author's Typescript EDWARDS BROTHERS, INC. Lithoprinters ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN 1949 THE GREGORY BONNIFIELD DESCENDANTS. FOREWORD. For several years I have been assembling the names of the descendants of Gregory Bonnifield and wife, Sarah Henley{?), who finally settled in Randolph {nowTucker) County, {West) Virginia. This task, an arduous one with many discouragements, is now presented in the most complete form possible under the circumstances. Over 5000 names of descendants have been coLlected. It is my guess (not even an estimate) that at least 1500 others are not included. Many of the "children" disappeared in the latter part of the eighteenth and the early part of the nineteenth centuries and no further traces of them are known. In regard to the accuracy of the list, please remember that all information had to be collected by correspondence. In hundreds of cases no direct replies were received and in formation had to be obtained from other sources. Very often the data were given from memory, which is always subject to error. Kany of the dates and some names have been changed three or four times as later information would come in. The magnitude of the task, the difficulties in preparing the list, and the chances of error are great. There are over 5,000 names of descendants. Each name has a separate number and from one to three dates: birth, marriage, and death. Thousands of names are given!! Children and are repeated!! parents; every marriage adds an additional name of husband or wife.

A The collection of Church Records is a most important work, and when we have added to this the names and places of persons, with the dates thereto belonging, who form the ground work of such an undertaking, the task becomes the more trying and exacting. Many persons have, in a small way written histories of parishes and of dioceses ; but few have had the perseverance, the knowledge, and the almost unique gift of the compiler of this Book, Clogher Clergy and Parishes, Canon J.

  • AMELIA COUNTY ORDER BOOK 18 July 1786 – March 1788
AMELIA COUNTY ORDER BOOKS 17 & 18 June 1785 – March 1788 Transcribed by Reiley Kidd Published by the Amelia County Historical Society Amelia, VA 23002 AMELIA COUNTY ORDER BOOKS 17 & 18 June 1785 – March 1788 TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction………………………………………………………………. ii Glossary…………………………………………………………………….. v Order Book 17, June 1785 – June 1786………………………………. 1 Order Book 18, July 1786 – March 1788………….………………… 127 Index………………………………………………………………………….. 299 i INTRODUCTION The Amelia County, Virginia Order Books contain the written record of the County Court, which met monthly, and the Quarterly Court, which met four times a year. These Courts were officiated by Gentlemen Justices, who were typically among the most educated and prosperous men in the County. These Court records contain a wealth of information about the period that they cover. The majority of cases heard before the Gentlemen Justices dealt with property disputes, and the resolution of debts and other obligations. Thus people with much property and wealth are mentioned frequently in these records, while those with little appear infrequently. However, the Order Books contain many other types of records. These include the recording of deeds (usually termed "indentures" in the Order Books), wills, commissions for building of bridges or roads, the binding out of orphans, charges of bastardy (typically giving the name of the child and BOTH parents), and the granting of licenses to run a retail store or an "ordinary" (an inn), or to preach or practice law in the County. Transfers of land needed to be certified by the County Court, and thus are recorded in these records, even though the deed itself, with a complete description of the location and specifics of the property, was also recorded in the County Deed Book for that year.

READERS of County Histories must be aware that the County Historian, as a rule, has neither time nor space to devote to what may be termed the more minute details of the domestic life and customs of each Parish in his County. He cannot, for instance, be expected to transcribe the Parish Register, or the accounts of Churchwardens; and yet these documents contain information which must be extremely interesting to all residents, and without which no Parochial History can be said to have been thoroughly and completely written. Impressed with this idea, I have often wished, if it were possible, to add some little link in the chain of the history of my native town.
