Bibek Debroy∗ Culture is difficult to define. This is more so in a large and heterogeneous country like India, where there is no common language and religion. There are sub-cultures within the country. Joseph Nye’s ‘soft power’ expression draws on a country’s cross-border cultural influences and is one enunciated with the American context in mind. Almost tautologically, soft power implies the existence of a relatively large country and the term is, therefore, now also being used for China and India. In the Indian case, most instances of practice of soft power are linked to language and literature (including Indians writing in English), music, dance, cuisine, fashion, entertainment and even sport, and there is no denying that this kind of cross-border influence has been increasing over time, with some trigger provided by the diaspora. The film and television industry’s influence is no less important. In the last few years, India has produced the largest number of feature films in the world, with 1,164 films produced in 2007. The United States came second with 453, Japan third with 407 and China fourth with 402. Ticket sales are higher for Bollywood than for Hollywood, though revenue figures are much higher for the latter. Indian film production is usually equated with Hindi-language Bollywood, often described as the largest film-producing centre in the world. -

Roger Murtaugh (Glover), also a veteran, is an easy-going homicide detective with a loving family, a big house, and a pension he does not want to lose. The only thing Murtaugh and Riggs have in common is that they hate to work with partners, but their partnership becomes the key to survival when a routine murder investigation turns into an all-out war with an international heroin ring. 46 Scottish Society at the time of William Wallace That the Scots were identified as separate people by the late tenth and early eleventh century can be seen from the chronicles of Durham which record their passage and both successful and failed attempts at conquest. I Whether they were independent or vassal kings was not a matter of major significance at the time. Some of them looked to England for support. Malcolm Canmore in 1072 was forced to submit to William the Conqueror at Abernethy. This did not stop him raiding southwards later. His son Edgar said in a charter that he was king "by the grant of my lord, William, king of the English and by paternal inheritance"2 and he bore a sword at William Rufus's coronation. Henry I took to wife a Scottish princess. Later kings of Scotland took English queens. The Scottish kings did homage to the English for English lands such as the earldom of Huntingdon, but then the English kings did homage to the French for some of the lands they held in France.3 More interesting perhaps is the question 'What was Scotland in Wallace's time?' It was an area which lacked the cultural homogeneity of Ireland or Wales. The Islands and the West Coast were part of the Scandinavian kingdom down to 1100, spoke Norse and used Odal law. The kingdom ruled by the descendants of Kenneth MacApline (died c.858) who called themselves kings of the Scots, which had held sway over Gaels and Picts in the west, had by Wallace's time spread to the south and east which was 'English' speaking. -

For Release: On Approval Motion Picture Sound Editors to Honor George Miller with Filmmaker Award 68th MPSE Golden Reel Awards to be held as a global, virtual event on April 16th Studio City, California – February 10, 2021 – The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) will honor Academy Award-winner George Miller with its annual Filmmaker Award. The Australian writer, director and producer is responsible for some of the most successful and beloved films of recent decades including Mad Max, Mad Max 2: Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Mad Max: Fury Road. In 2007, he won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for the smash hit Happy Feet. He also earned Oscar nominations for Babe and Lorenzo’s Oil. Miller will be presented with the MPSE FilmmaKer Award at the 68th MPSE Golden Reel Awards, set for April 16th as an international virtual event. Miller is being honored for a career noteworthy for its incredibly broad scope and consistent excellence. “George Miller redefined the action genre through his Mad Max films, and he has been just as successful in bringing us such wonderfully different films as The Witches of Eastwick, Lorenzo’s Oil, Babe and Happy Feet,” said MPSE President MarK Lanza. “He represents the art of filmmaking at its best. We are proud to present him with MPSE’s highest honor.” Miller called the award “a lovely thing,” adding, “It’s a big pat on the back. I was originally drawn to film through the visual sense, but I learned to recognize sound, emphatically, as integral to the apprehension of the story. -

Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the cultures, poetry, and music traits of the inhabitants found in Middle-earth, this document dissects the thematic material of Shore’s film score. -

18 Would the Real William Wallace Please Stand Up The object of this paper is to give a brief outline of the life of William Wallace, and to make references in passing to the film, Braveheart, loosely based on the life of William Wallace, starring the Australian actor Mel Gibson. Without wishing to detract in any way from the marvellous spirit of Scottish nationalism which the film produced, the comments on the film will inevitably point primarily to just a few of the film's historical inaccuracies. Films for popular consumption should perhaps not be expected to be historically accurate. The image of Wallace in the minds of such parts of the public who have heard of him at all, is largely myth. Great historical figures gather myths around them and the Scots are among the great myth builders. Braveheart the film builds on the myths of Wallace, but at the expense of adding invention where there was no need. Edward I of England is portrayed as deliciously evil, by Patrick McGooan, but the most evil thing Edward I did in Scotland, the sack and slaughter of Berwick in 1298, does not appear in the film. When there was so much real horror, heroism, honour and deception in reality, what is the need for more myth building? It is generally accepted that William Wallace was born at Elderslie, a small town southwest of Glasgow, the son of a local significant landholder. The date or even year of his birth has never been established. Since his activities between 1297 and 1305 could only have been the work of a man in his prime, 1 he must have been at least twenty and probably not more than thirty-five in 1297. -

Get it all free at the Sydney Opera House when GRAPHIC takes over from Saturday 10 – Sunday 11 October. In the Mad Max Artist Alley the heroes, villains and wastelands of Mad Max: Fury Road will appear as reinterpreted by underground illustrators, including Sydney’s Chris Yee, James Jirat Patradoon and Georgia Hill, Melbourne’s Maddy Young and Paris’ own Ilk. The Mad Max Artist Alley, in the Concert Hall’s harbourside Northern Foyer, is co-curated by cult art collectives The Opening Hours and Goodspace, in collaboration with GRAPHIC. Looming over the Forecourt from the top of the Opera House steps, a four-metre-tall zombie hand straight out of The Walking Dead will count down to the Season 6 premiere on Sunday morning. Gelato Messina will be serving free cups of ‘Carl’s Chocolate Pudding’, the perfect blend of gruesome and delicious, from their ‘Alexandria Ice Scream’ pop-up store between midday and 4.00pm over the weekend. Since its inception in 2010, GRAPHIC has evolved into a festival like no other, commissioning and presenting new works from some of the world’s most respected artists including, but not limited to, Neil Gaiman (2010), Shaun Tan (2010), Gotye (2011), Pixar’s Lee Unkrich (2012) and Art Spiegelman (2013).
