4.1.2016 PRESS RELEASE THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART ANNOUNCE THE WORLD PREMIERE OF FEATURE FILM THE SILENT EYE FEATURING CECIL TAYLOR & MIN TANAKA & DIRECTED BY ACCLAIMED AUSTRALIAN FILMMAKER AND ARTIST AMIEL COURTIN-WILSON. http://whitney.org/Exhibitions/OpenPlanCecilTaylor THE SILENT EYE is the World Premiere of a new feature length performance film by Amiel Courtin-Wilson featuring Min Tanaka and Cecil Taylor. Shot in Cecil Taylor’s home over three days in January 2016, the film is a highly intimate, impressionistic portrait of the unspoken rapport between two masters of their form. Shot by Sundance award winning cinematographer Germain McMicking and featuring sublime slow motion cinematography of Cecil and Min at work together, the film plays out like a timeless, elegant conversation between the two men- at once meditative and highly moving. The Robert D. Bielecki Foundation have just announced their generous support of the completion of the film and Robert had this to say about the project. “Filmmaker Amiel Courtin-Wilson's THE SILENT EYE is a marvel of time expanded and contracted. He captures a journey between old friends filled with prescient reminiscence - a meditation in sound and movement between two masters catching up, rewinding, and spinning forward the way ocean currents undulate when kissed by the wind.” Amiel is also thrilled to be working with the Robert D. Bielecki Foundation. “It is a humbling and deeply inspiring experience to be supported to create such a singular and specific film.” Acclaimed director Amiel Courtin-Wilson's feature films have screened and won awards at Venice Film Festival (HAIL, 2011 RUIN, 2013) Cannes (CICADA, 2009) and Sundance (CHASING BUDDHA, 2000).

Mad Max: Affine Spline Insights into Deep Learning RANDALL BALESTRIERO, RICHARD BARANIUK Rice University, Houston, Texas, USA [email protected], [email protected] We build a rigorous bridge between deep networks (DNs) and approximation theory via spline functions and operators. Our key result is that a large class of DNs can be written as a composition of max- affine spline operators (MASOs), which provide a powerful portal through which to view and analyze their inner workings. For instance, conditioned on the input signal, the output of a MASO DN can be written as a simple affine transformation of the input. This implies that a DN constructs a set of signal- dependent, class-specific templates against which the signal is compared via a simple inner product; we explore the links to the classical theory of optimal classification via matched filters and the effects of data memorization. Going further, we propose a simple penalty term that can be added to the cost function of any DN learning algorithm to force the templates to be orthogonal with each other; this leads to significantly improved classification performance and reduced overfitting with no change to the DN architecture. The spline partition of the input signal space that is implicitly induced by a MASO directly links DNs to the theory of vector quantization (VQ) and K-means clustering, which opens up new geometric avenue to study how DNs organize signals in a hierarchical fashion. To validate the utility of the VQ interpretation, we develop and validate a new distance metric for signals and images that quantifies the difference between their VQ encodings.

Whilst a senior examiner has provided a possible level for each Assessment Objective when marking these answers, in a live series the mark a response would get depends on the whole process of standardisation, which considers the big picture of the year’s scripts. Therefore the level awarded here should be considered to be only an estimation of what would be awarded. How levels and marks correspond to grade boundaries depends on the Awarding process that happens after all/most of the scripts are marked and depends on a number of factors, including candidate performance across the board.

  • Climate Trauma, Or the Affects of the Catastrophe to Come
Climate Trauma, or the Affects of the Catastrophe to Come MICHAEL RICHARDSON School of the Arts and Media, University of New South Wales, Australia Abstract The climate catastrophe to come is traumatically affecting, whether in its micro and macro manifestations, in the threat it poses to existing ways of life, in its upending of entrenched understandings of the workings of the world, or in the injury it is doing to partic- ular lives and wider ecologies. It works on ecologies and bodies alike as a kind of wounding, one not simply or solely to the everyday stuff of biological life but to the very constitution of experience and expression. Critiquing and extending writing on climate, trauma, and aes- thetic experience by E. Ann Kaplan (2016), Timothy Morton (2013), and others, this article ar- gues that these affects of climate catastrophe are traumatically affecting without necessar- ily being traumatizing: they are jarring, rupturing, disjunctive experiences of future crisis in the now. This article traces these affects of apocalypse as they circulate traumatically in three texts: George Miller’s film Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Marina Zurkow’sanimationSlurb (2009), and Briohny Doyle’snovelThe Island Will Sink (2016). Climate catastrophe, that most threatening yet elusive of hyperobjects, marks and emerges irresistibly from within these works, not simply as theme, setting, or symbol but as the form of their affectivity. This inten- sity presses into the present from the future, shaping how the catastrophe to come is felt today and exposing crucial tensions between aesthetic expression and lived experience. Keywords affect, climate trauma, hyperobject, catastrophe, futurity, Deleuze lready arriving from the future yet only just beginning to unfold, climate catastro- A phe bears down on and shapes the present.

  • Mad Max Fury Road Introduction
2019-2020 Local to Global Film Series 2019 Mad Max Fury Road Introduction Lynne Stahl Follow this and additional works at: https://researchrepository.wvu.edu/l2g_film-2019_20 Part of the Film and Media Studies Commons Transcript--Introduction to Mad Max: Fury Road Lynne Stahl, WVU Libraries 9/4/2019 Thank you all for coming! I’m Lynne Stahl, the Humanities Librarian, and I’m excited to see so many people here because film studies seems to happen in sort of isolated pockets at WVU. I’m not an event planner, so I’ve been a bit stressed out until I realized that even if no one showed up I’d still get to watch Mad Max on a big screen. It’s hard to speak insightfully about a film without spoiling the plot, but it seems selfish to spoil the plot solely to make my intro comprehensible, so as a compromise I’ll just give a very brief outline and then tell you way more than you ever wanted to know about the film’s production history. We tend to view films as a discrete units of consumption and self-contained narratives that stop at the edge of the screen after 90 minutes--but often the many tipping points and variables and iterations that make up the negative spaces around the movies we watch are just as illuminating, if not more so. Mad Max: Fury Road takes place in a post-apocalyptic desert world in which oil and water are scarce and tightly controlled by tyrannical private groups and individuals.
