2017 FFSA SEASON REVIEW FACILITIES FUNDING

The continued improvement of club based infrastructure has been a strategic priority for Football Federation SA in the past number of years. Being able to cater for the expanding participation base is vitally important to the sustainability of clubs. Additionally, being able to provide quality environments for game day and training will ultimately lead to the development of quality players for the future.

In partnership with clubs, Football Federation SA (FFSA) has developed a Football Facilities Development Strategy that has considered the existing provision of facilities available for Football in the State and planned for future growth. The planning document has provided an evidenced based vehicle to present to Federal, State and Local Governments.

Football’s plan received a fantastic boost when the South Australian State Government announced an investment of $13.5 million into community Football facilities. The announcement made by Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis (who has been a great supporter of Football in the state) and Deputy Premier John Rau enabled Football Federation SA to unlock a further $7 million in federal and local government support. The combined investment has seen $30.5 million invested in Football specific infrastructure projects in the past two years.

The following clubs and user groups have been positively impacted on as a result of the South Australian State Government’s investment;

Adelaide Olympic Football Club, Modbury Jets, University Women, Adelaide City Women, Campbelltown Women, Cumberland United Women, Fulham United Women, Metro United Women, Salisbury Inter Women, West Adelaide Women, Sturt Lion, Fullham United, West Adelaide Hellas, Adelaide Comets, Metro Stars, White City Juniors and Seniors, Cove, South Adelaide Panthers, Seaford Rangers, West Torrens Birkalla, Mt Barker United, Northern Demons, Cumberland United, Referees, NTC Boys & Girls, FFSA Development Squads (Boys & Girls).

Football Federation SA and the Football Family thanks the Federal, State and Local Government’s for your support.

2017 FFSA SEASON WRAP PAGE 2 Digital and Sponsorship

Football Federation South expanded its presence across digital platforms again in 2017, continuing with the Triple M video podcast, and introducing the well received RAA Highlights Package.

The Real Football Show, hosted by Triple M’s Chris Dittmar, had a total viewership of more than 200,000 via Facebook across 30 episodes, with an average of 7,106 views per week (70% increase from 2016).

The launch of the RAA highlights package has taken coverage of both the PlayStation 4 National Premier League and Women’s National Premier League to new heights this year, showcasing the talent on offer within the local game throughout the State. With an average viewership of 4,181 views per week across Facebook and YouTube, there is a strong case to expand on this for 2018.

The Match of the Round Live Stream continued for a third year, with FFSA broadcasting one game for each round of the 2017 PlayStation 4 NPL season. Halfway through the season, the broadcast platform transitioned from YouTube to Facebook Live, seeing a dramatic increase in the number of viewers tuning in each week. The largest viewership for an individual game came for the Westfield FFA Cup South Australian Qualifying Final between Adelaide City and MetroStars, with nearly 14,000 viewers watching the game live.

Football Federation SA continued to expand it list of passionate and committed corporate partners in 2017, welcoming; Elliott and Turner Travel Associates, AMC Commercial Cleaning, Adelaide Fence Co, 4 Ways Fresh Produce, JB Metropolitan Distributors and Essential Sports Products. Additionally, FFSA announced its first official charity partner, linking up with HeartKids and holding the first HeartKids Round where the football family collectively raised in excess of $7,000.

2017 FFSA SEASON WRAP PAGE 3 Pathway Programs

Football Federation SA continues to look after pathway programs in and we are continually striving to employ the best possible coaches and provide the best possible environment to develop young players for the future.

In excess of 900 players (boys and girls) experience pathway programs annually with each player receiving a minimum of 8 weeks and up to 11 months in an intensive training environment.

Nationally, South Australian teams are punching well above our weight when considering the much larger participation bases of the eastern states.

FFSA is committed to the continued improvement of our pathway programs and thank local clubs for the support in releasing players for the betterment of Football in the State.

In the past 5 years there have been a number of players identified from South Australia who have been fortunate enough to gain further opportunities within the game. The following page provides a list of players and where they are now participating.

As of Season 2017 - To be updated for 2017/18 Season 2017 FFSA SEASON WRAP PAGE 5 Match Official Update

2017 has been a positive year for referees in South Australia with our numbers continuing to grow across the state and SA match officials and referee coaches being highly sort after by Football Federation Australia (FFA) for national competitions.

2017 has see referee number increase by nearly 15% from 2016, seeing us finish on 320 referees up from 270. This has been aided by 54 new referees completing the Level 4 Referee course and all picking up the whistle following on from the course. We were also able to retain 84% of our referees from 2016 which is higher then the national average of 75%. Our increase in numbers has allowed FFSA to cover 92% of the 6389 matches in the Senior Men’s, Women’s and Community leagues with at least one registered official taking the burden off clubs and volunteers to supply or act as a referee.

This year has also seen South Australia highly represented at FFA tournaments, and for the first time in many years we have had three referees attend both Girl’s and Boy’s National Youth Championships with South Australian Coaches attending both tournaments . Following on from this our representation on the Hyundai A-League has increased from previous years to five officials with the addition of the Video Assistant Referee and South Australian referee coaches both being used by FFA on the Westfield FFA Cup Quarter Final matches held on the 13th September and 20th September. Our Westfield W-League Panel has also increased this year to three with the addition of Paula Orlandi who will make her debut this season as an Assistant Referee. A full list of National appointments is below.

FFSA has also been very active in the coaching and training of its local and regional referees with entry level courses being held throughout the year in the Metro area, Adelaide Hills region, Port Pirie, Riverland, Mt Gambier, Yorke Peninsula and Port Lincoln. All courses were well attended and have helped to strengthen the referee associations in those regions and provide better quality officials to the regional associations. FFSA has also committed to more then three times the amount of referee upgrades from 2016 with 45 referees moving up in there qualifications this season which provides more knowledgeable referees to the FFSA’s competitions.

In 2017 FFSA has seen one of our most respected coaches, Nathan Magill, appointed to the National Referee Committee. Nathan joins fellow South Australian Airlie Keen on the committee giving South Australian official quick access to the most up to date information from FFA. In conjunction with this FFSA Elite Coach Craig Zetter has continued his role as an FFA And Asian Football Confederation (AFC) referee coach and instructor, this has resulted in the most up to date coaching being supplied to south Australian officials.

PlayStation 4 National Premier League 2017 proved to be a tight season with Adelaide City claiming League Premiers on 50 points on the last game of the season with MetroStars right on their heels finishing the season 2nd on 47 points.

The race to make finals was tight with 3 teams all in contention to make the last spot in 6th, not finalised until the last game of the season.

At the bottom of the table, it was tight right up until the end. Adelaide United fought of relegation with a strong finish to the season with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in the last 5 games.

Croydon Kings went on a fairytale run after finishing the season in 4th place defeating West Adelaide, Adelaide Comets and MetroStars on their way to make the Grand Final before taking the final scalp against Adelaide City to be crowned Champions.

State League 1 South Adelaide had to wait until the final game of the season to be crowned League Premiers and with it, promotion to NPL for the 2018 season.

Mid table though, the final spot came right down to the wire with Raiders claiming 6th spot in front of Cove only by goal difference and separated by only 2 points to 9th on the table.

At the bottom of the table, Adelaide Hills and Adelaide Victory could have saved themselves from relegation had they got a win on the last game of the season.

With South Adelaide gaining automatic promotion to next season’s NPL by finishing League Premiers, the Grand Final match between Western Strikers and Sturt Lions had become a promotion play-off with Sturt Lions winning comfortably on the day 2-0.

State League 2 Seaford Rangers secured promotion as League Premiers with 2 weeks to spare after Fulham United, hot on their heels all season, slipped up in Round 21 against UniSA FC.

Fulham United’s slip up in Round 21 allowed Northern Demons to leap frog into 2nd spot however were unable to defeat Seaford Rangers in the home and away final. Fulham United’s impressive goal scoring (finished the season with 77 goals scored) was too much for Northern Demons as they succumbed to Fulham 5-1.
