We think relationships matter.

A close community makes learning more meaningful. Maybe you’ve heard of the “ivory tower.” We’ve never seen one on our campus. Our professors are both accessible and without ego. Maybe because they are as passionate about teaching as they are about research. Possibly because they run every classroom, not TAs.

Perhaps it’s due to our intimate class size (25 students on aver- age). We just think it’s easier to learn from someone you can easily engage in conversation.

Each Capital student is individually advised by a faculty mem- ber who helps with class selection, changing majors, intern- ships, references and jobs.

5 44 Crusader BasketBall Capital Calls Columbus Home.

Our city is the 16th largest in the country. It’s Ohio’s capital. And it’s the headquarters of many Fortune 500 companies – which means opportunities aren’t hard to come by. But it’s not all business. Columbus has professional sports to watch in every season. And an arts community that’s unmatched. Shopping at Easton Town Center or in the Short North is just minutes from campus. And nearby parks, trails, museums and a zoo, all just waiting to be explored.

Welcome to the Neighborhood.

Our suburb is an escape from the city, but it’s only minutes away.

Bexley is one of Columbus’ most historic neighborhoods. It’s home to the governor’s mansion. Main Street is marked with restaurants and coffee houses (like Chipotle and Starbucks) and an independent theatre. There are tree-lined streets populated by architecturally stunning homes.

And everything sits just steps away from the residence halls.

A Picturesque Campus.

Capital was founded in 1830, and our history shows on campus.

Mature trees line the paths that connect our impressive academic halls. Under their branches countless spring classes have been taught, and new friendships have been forged. Inside our gates lies our complete campus. Athletic facilities, academic and administration buildings, and student residence halls are all interspersed. You’re never more than a short walk from wherever you need to go.

8 The Ohio Athletic Conference

Capital University enters its 93rd season as a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2018-19. The OAC is the nation’s third-oldest collegiate athletic conference and from its beginnings in 1902 has never wavered in its focus on the entire development of the student-athlete. 12 2018-19 Season Preview

Capital Men’s Basketball Reloaded for 2018-19 Campaign

After an offseason of preparation and improvement, Capital University Men’s Basketball is looking to show that it is ready to once again contend for Ohio Athletic Conference championships.

The Crusaders will have one of the most experienced teams 24th-year had coach Damon Goodwin has had at 2018-19 OAC Men’s Basketball his disposal in quite some time with five seniors and three Preseason Coaches’ Poll juniors. After a year of growth last season, that depth and veteran talent will be counted on to propel Capital to 1. John Carroll...... 79 (7) conference glory. 2. Marietta...... 75 (3) 3. Ohio Northern...... 59 “My expectations are that those seniors should be capable 4. Mount Union...... 54 of leading us to compete for the conference,” said 5. Baldwin Wallace...... 50 Goodwin. “They’re all very good players and that is the 6. Capital...... 48 7. Heidelberg...... 28 challenge that we’ve laid out to them, ‘this is your time 8. Muskingum...... 27 and this is your team’ and I believe that they can do it. Any 9. Wilmington...... 21 time in this league you have seniors playing for you that’s a 10. Otterbein...... 9 big advantage. Collectively, they just need to come together and realize that.”

Leading that charge are All-OAC performers Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./ Dixie Heights) and Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), Capital's pair of explosive guards. Schreck earned an All-OAC Second Team nod and Weingartner was tabbed All-OAC Honorable Mention. Caleb Cox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), Will Hannah (Milford, Ohio/Milford) and Gavin Wildermuth (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) are the other four-year players this year.

Joining those seniors will be juniors Dan Auble (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville) and Ganiyu Yahaya (Abuja, nigeria/Wesley Christian) as well as returning sophomores Joe Hartmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), Reed Bradfield (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights), Logan Jessing (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) and last Joey Weingartner | Sr. | Guard year's starting point guard Cameron Caldwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South). The team also has four newcomers.

The team will rely on its experience in the early going and it will be needed based on the schedule Goodwin has put together.

“We may have the hardest schedule we’ve ever had,” Goodwin said. “There really are no down days. I think our non-conference schedule is probably one of the strongest in the country. If we can get through that and we can compete through the league and get down the road and we’re looking for an avenue to get into the tournament, I think our strength of schedule will be a tremendous asset.”

Capital's first three contests are away from home against teams that finished near the tops of their respective leagues and the Crusaders will host on Nov. 25 in the second leg of the OAC/ NCAC Challenge. A home meeting with Adrian College (Mich.) precedes Capital's OAC opener against rival Otterbein University on Dec. 1. Capital will play 13 games in the Capital Center Performance Arena, 10 true road games and two neutral-site games away from The Cap Center.

14 Head Coach Damon Goodwin

Damon Goodwin has patrolled the sidelines as head men's basketball coach at Capital University beginning with the 1994-1995 season and has established the Crusaders as one of the elite programs in not only the Ohio Athletic Conference but all of NCAA Division III. Goodwin also became the winningest coach in Capital men's basketball history by virtue of an 80-53 home win over Ohio Dominican on January 5, 2010. A six-time OAC Coach of the Year (1996, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013) and National Association of Basketball Coaches Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year (2009), Goodwin has guided the Crusaders to five OAC regular season championships, two OAC Tournament titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Round of 16 in 2009. Capital has finished with a record at or above .500 in the conference for 14 consecutive seasons (2000-14) and has been in contention for a league title late in virtually every season during that span. Over his tenure, his players have garnered many individual awards at the conference, regional and national levels. In his 23 seasons as head coach, 48 all-conference accolades have been collected, including 15 first team nods. He has coached two individuals toward All-American status, including two-time honoree, Nate Stahl (2008-09). Ten players have received NABC All-District/Region awards while seven have been recognized for the same award by D3Hoops.com. In 2011-12, Goodwin led Capital to the OAC regular season and tournament titles. The Crusaders reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament after defeating Randolph-Macon in the first. Three Capital players were named All-OAC, including junior Spencer Niekamp, a first- team selection who also earned D3hoops.com all-region and NABC all-district accolades. Goodwin was picked OAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career. The Crusaders earned their second consecutive OAC regular season championship in 2012-13. Senior Spencer Niekamp, the conference player of the year, became the seventh player in program history to be named an All-American after being chosen to the second team by the NABC. Capital made its seventh straight appearance in the league tournament semifinals.

In 2010-11, Goodwin guided the Crusaders to an 18-9 record, including a 12-6 mark in OAC play and a sweep of league champion and NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier Marietta. Capital, which was in contention for the conference title until the final weeks of the regular season, made its fifth straight appearance in the OAC Tournament semifinals. Goodwin's ability to mold and develop young talent was on full display during the 2009-10 season, as the Crusaders won 15 of their last 21 games to finish third in the OAC despite dressing only one senior. Capital would later advance to the OAC Semifinal while producing an All-Region selection for the third consecutive season. Coach Goodwin earned his fourth OAC Coach of the Year honor for his efforts, and was also named to the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame that year. The Crusaders enjoyed their best season in program history in 2008-2009 as Goodwin guided Capital to a school-record 26 victories and a berth in the NCAA "Round of 16". CU made their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and was nationally ranked throughout the entire regular season reaching a program-record mark of No. 5 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. CU had the best home record in the Great Lakes Region at 15-0 and was a host of the NCAA First and Second Rounds at the Capital Center in front of sold out crowds. The 2008-09 campaign also saw Goodwin mentor the OAC Player of the Year, two All-OAC First Team selections and the first-ever back-to- back consensus All-America pick in school history. For his efforts, Goodwin was named Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. In 2007-2008, Goodwin led Capital to its second straight Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title and second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Crusaders also won 24 games, had the OAC Player of the Year and first All-American for the school since 1988, and Goodwin claimed OAC Coach of the Year honors for a second straight season and third time in his career. Other highlights of his tenure on the bench in Columbus include making the NCAA Tournament and winning OAC Coach of the Year honors in just his second season at Capital in 1996-97. In 2001-2002, he led Capital to a then school-record 23 wins, while in 2002-03 he brought the school its first OAC regular season title in 19 seasons. He is only the second coach in school history to win over 200 games. Goodwin was sidelined for the 2015-16 season after successfully winning his battle against hairy cell leukemia, a rare but highly treatable cancer of the blood. During his battle, Goodwin remained a staunch supporter of the Crusaders while becoming healthy once again, ensuring his spot on the bench for a return prior to the 2016-17 season. Capital won its first four games to begin the season with Goodwin patrolling the sidelines once again. Prior to becoming the Crusaders head coach, he served five seasons as an assistant coach at Wittenberg University. During his time there, the Tigers won five North Coast Athletic Conference titles, earned four NCAA Tournament bids and a Final Four appearance in 1994. As a player, the St. Marys, Ohio, native earned first team All-Ohio honors at St. Marys Memorial High School in 1982, before attending the University of Dayton. He helped lead the Flyers to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1984 and 1985 where the eventual national champion (Georgetown and Villanova) eliminated them each season. Upon leaving Dayton, Goodwin was taken in the seventh round (147 overall) of the NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. He spent the summer out west before returning that fall to begin his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Dayton. Goodwin's first head coaching job was a two-year stint at Fairborn High School in Fairborn, Ohio, before joining the staff at Wittenberg. Goodwin resides in Upper Arlington, Ohio, with his wife, Danielle. The couple has three children - Grant (27), Addison (25) and Dane (18). 15 Assistant Coaches Andy Winters - Assistant Coach

The 2018-19 season marks the fifth year the Crusaders have had record-holding All-American Andy Winters on staff with the men’s basketball team. Winters will enter his fourth year as an assistant while having also spent a season as Capital’s interim head coach in 2015.

Prior to joining Capital’s staff, Winters served as an assistant at nearby Ohio Dominican University, where he helped the Panthers to the most conference overall wins since their first season as a member of NCAA Division II in 2010-11. In just one season, ODU improved in multiple statistical categories including field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage, and turnovers per game.

After his first season at Capital (2014-15), Winters helped coach two student-athletes to All-OAC honors (Andrew Bolka, Second Team; AJ Dixon, honorable mention). Capital also saw its turnovers decrease and its defense allow fewer points per game compared to the 2014 campaign.

Winters took over as the interim head coach prior to the 2016 season, due to head coach Damon Goodwin's medical leave of absence. Capital improved upon its record from the year before, finishing with a 12-14 record. The Crusaders got off to a fast start under Winters, winning seven of its first 10 games. Capital advanced to the OAC Tournament where it lost to No. 8 John Carroll. A pair of student-athletes were named Academic All-OAC in 2016, while another enjoyed All-OAC and All-Region recognition.

Over his five seasons on staff, Capital players have been granted 10 all-conference awards, including one first team selection (Mark Minch, 2016).

Prior to joining the staff at Ohio Dominican, Winters was an All-American and four-year starter at nearby Ohio Wesleyan University. As a senior, he was tabbed All-America status and was named the district or regional Player of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), D3.Hoops.com, and D3 News. By the end of his playing career, Winters had become a three-time all-conference selection, North Coast Athletic Conference All-Decade Team honoree, broke all the school’s assist records, and participated in the NABC All-Star Game. Anthony Gholson - Assistant Coach Anthony Gholson begins his sixth season as an assistant men’s basketball coach for the Capital University men’s basketball team.

Over his first six seasons as an assistant, Capital players have been granted 10 all-conference awards, including one first team selection (Mark Minch, 2016). After his first season, Gholson guided forward Michael Sommer (Second Team), and guards AJ Dixon and Mitch Westerheide (honorable mention) to All-OAC laurels. Spencer Niekamp went on to become OAC Player of the Year and a first team all-conference pick.

Prior to Capital, Gholson served as head men’s basketball coach at Heidelberg University, where he led the Student Princes to more than 50 victories over the course of five seasons (2008-13). Gholson guided Heidelberg to the 2010 OAC Tournament championship game.

Gholson was also the head coach (2000-04) and director of athletics (1999-05) at Columbus State Community College. While at CSCC, Gholson’s teams compiled an 86-36 record (.704 winning percentage) and a trio of 20-win seasons. The Cougars were ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II in 2003-04, when the team won the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference title for the first time in school history. He was named the conference’s Coach of the Year in both 2002-03 and 2003-04.

Gholson also held assistant coaching positions at (2005-08) and Urbana University (2004-05). Jeff Gongwer - Assistant Coach

Jeff Gongwer enters his fourth season on the Capital men’s basketball staff.

Gongwer has been a fixture in the Westerville, Ohio basketball scene over the last decade after serving multiple Westerville high schools as an assistant coach. For six seasons, he was an assistant at Westerville North High School and then transitioned into a varsity assistant coaching position at Westerville Central, a title he held for three seasons. Last year, Gongwer served a volunteer assistant coach at Otterbein University.

From 2012 to 2014, Gongwer spent time in the AAU ranks with the Ohio Hoopsters U16 and U17 teams. He also assisted Prep Spotlight Magazine in scouting top-level talent throughout the Midwest.

Gongwer was a two-sport athlete at nearby Westerville North prior to playing baseball collegiately at the University of Rio Grande (NAIA). He graduated with a degree in business management and owns two successful RE/MAX real estate offices in Central Ohio.

He and his wife, Cathy McKenzie, have been married for 30 years and have two daughters, Jessica Horton and Kelli Gongwer. 16 2018-19 Returning Players

30 Capital Men’s Basketball in Canada

Every three years, the NCAA allows college teams to take an international trip. In the spring of 2013, Capital traveled to Canada for a seven-day tour north of the border, where the team played four games while touring Niagra Falls, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. The program made similar trips to Italy in 2010, Great Britain and Ireland in 2007, and Spain in 2004.

31 Capital Dribbles Through Spain In May of 2017, Capital University Men’s Basketball spent nine days traveling the European country, exploring Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid.

Along the way, the team played local teams in each city and got to experience local food, shops, landmarks and went to a soccer match. This was the program's fifth international trip under Damon Goodwin.

32 Senior Savvy

When Capital University Men’s Basketball takes the court in 2018, fans may not initially see much of a difference from prior rosters. Dig a little deeper and watch a little closer and it will become apparent that this team is very different from the Capital teams of the past.

The Crusaders return 11 players from last year’s team with almost half of those players going into their senior seasons. Austin Schreck, Joey Weingartner, Caleb Cox, Will Hannah and Gavin Wildermuth are each prepared for their final seasons with the Purple and White, giving the team its largest senior class since the 2012-13 season.

“The two wing players we have in Austin and Joey were both all-league last year and the expectations is for them to have very big years for us,” Goodwin said. “I really believe that they have to come with the mindset that we are going to go as far as the five seniors can take our program.”

“We’ve been together for so long that we just know each other so well,” said Weingartner, a guard from Centerville, Ohio. “We’ve all seen significant minutes in good times and in bad times. We all bring something a little different to the game too.”

The experience will be needed in the early going as Goodwin thinks he has lined up perhaps the toughest schedule Capital has had in his 24 years as head coach. And while that may be challenging, the strength of schedule will be a motivating factor as well.

“It’s really motivating and it shines a light on how talented a group coach thinks we are and what we can achieve,” said Austin Schreck. “You don’t schedule a tough nonconference unless you think you can succeed doing so. That’s a reflection of what he thinks of us.”

The senior class combined to contribute 49.6 points per game last year and the four most prolific scorers on the team are seniors this season. Cox, Schreck and Hannah were the Crusaders' top rebounders last season as well and Schreck and Hannah were 1-2 in assists.
