There is no “self” or “others,” there is only an eternal dream that goes on, giving birth to transient characters, fictional adventures.1 An icon: Alexandra David-Neel in the global public sphere Alexandra David-Neel (Paris, 1868–Digne-les-bains, 1969)2 certainly ranks among the most celebrated of the Western Buddhist pioneers who popularized the modern perception of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism at large.3 As is well known, it is her illegal trip from Eastern Tibet to Lhasa in 1924 that made her famous.     BULLETIN OF TIBETOLOGY 155 A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF KAZI DAWA SAMDUP (1868-1922) 1 DASHO P.W. SAMDUP Thimpu Kazi Dawa Samdup was born to Shalngo Nimpenjo—also spelt Nim Paljor of the Guru Tashi clan 2—on 17 th June, 1868 in Sikkim. On the death of his mother, his father remarried, begetting three sons and two daughters from the second wife. Among Kazi Dawa Samdup’s siblings, the youngest brother Sarki Tshering—also known as Pemba Thendup according to some sources—acquired equal fame and honour in Sri Lanka as Reverend S. Mahinda Thero. In recognition of his contribution towards the propagation of Buddhism, and the development of Pali and Sinhala languages, the Sri Lankan government erected a statue in his name and also issued commemorative postage stamps in his memory. Pemba Thendup was mainly recognised as a poet monk, whose poems and songs inspired the Sri Lankan people during their independence movement. Considered as a national hero, his patriotic and devotional songs are used in school textbooks to instill a national feeling. Kazi Dawa Samdup’s early education began at the age of four learning the Tibetan script from his grandfather.     Research Note Tracking the Tulpa Exploring the “Tibetan” Origins of a Contemporary Paranormal Idea Natasha L. Mikles and Joseph p. Laycock Since the 1970s, tulpas have been a feature of Western ؛ABSTRACT paranormal lore. In contemporain paranormal discourse, a tulpa is a being that begins in the imagination but acquires a tangible reality and sentience. Tulpas are created either through a deliberate act of individ- ual will or unintentionally from the thoughts of numerous people. The in Magic (־tulpa was first described by Alexandra David-Néel (18681969 and Mystery in Tibet (1929) and is still regarded as a Tibetan concept. However, the idea of the tulpa is more indebted to Theosophy than to Tibetan Buddhism. This article explores the murky origins of the tulpa to show how the concept emerged from a dialogue between East and West in which Theosophical metaphysics were combined with terms adapted from Tibetan Buddhism. Introduction The Simla Conference of 1913–14, held in Simla, India, was a momentous event in which representatives of Tibet, China, and Britain discussed the political status of Tibet after the collapse of the Qing Empire in 1912. Although many scholars have examined the international circumstances around Tibet in the early twentieth century, the foreign policy of the Tibetan government has remained unclear, mainly because it is still very difficult to access Tibetan primary sources located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China.     Thomas William Rhys Davids Early life and education Thomas William Rhys Davids was born in England, at Colchester in Essex, the eldest son of a Congregational clergyman[2] from Wales, who was affectionately referred to as the Bishop of Essex. His mother, who died at the age of 37 following childbirth, had run the Sunday school at his father's church. Deciding on a Civil Service career, Rhys Davids studied Sanskrit under A.F. Stenzler, a distinguished scholar at the University of Breslau. He earned money in Breslau by teaching English. Civil service in Sri Lanka In 1863 Rhys Davids returned to Britain, and on passing his civil service exams was posted to Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon). When he was Magistrate of Galle and a case was brought before him involving questions of ecclesiastical law, he first learned of the Pāli language when a document in that language was brought in as evidence. In 1871 he was posted as Assistant Government Agent of Nuwarakalaviya, where Anuradhapura was the administrative centre. The governor was Sir Hercules Robinson, who had founded the Archaeological Commission in 1868. Rhys Davids became involved with the excavation of the ancient Sinhalese city of Anuradhapura, which had been abandoned after an invasion in 993 CE. He began to collect inscriptions and manuscripts, and from 1870-1872 wrote a series of articles for the Ceylon branch of the Royal Asiatic Society Journal about them. He learned the local language and spent time with the people. Rhys Davids' civil service career and his residence in Sri Lanka came to an abrupt end.

    The Western Quest for “Secret Tibet” © 2007 Harry Oldmeadow Originally published as “In Search of Secret Tibet” ( Esoterica 3, 2001) _____________________________________________________________________ AAs recently as 1962 an eminent Western Buddhist wrote, “Nowhere save in Tibet is there so much sorcery and ‘black’ magic, such degradation of the mind to selfish, evil ends.” 11 Another European practitioner, writing a few years later, asserted that the Vajrayana “is the ultimate flowering of the Mahayana doctrine”.22 Yet another argued that, “The importance of Tibetan tradition for our time and for the spiritual development of humanity lies in the fact that Tibet is the last living link that connects us with the civilizations of a distant past.”33 These were familiar motifs in the Western literature on Tibet which has often evoked deeply ambivalent European reactions—fear and contempt on one side, romantic idealisations on the other. At one moment Tibet is seen as a “feudal” and “Oriental” despotism pervaded by a degenerate “Lamaism” in which base superstition, “devil-dances and butter statues”, “mummery” and “black magic” (exerting its own sinister fascination) are the order of the day; at the next Tibet appears as the last surviving treasure-house of a primordial wisdom, as the crown-jewel of the Mahayana, as an idyllic land hermetically sealed against all the contaminations and pathologies of modernity. In the period since the earliest European incursions in the 17th century Tibet has become a “focus of European desire and fantasy”.44 As Donald Lopez has observed, the whole corpus of Western writing on Tibet is shot through with a series of oppositions by which the religious-cultural heritage is variously perceived as pristine and polluted, authentic and derivative, holy and demonic.

The main aim of this thesis is to show that Sir Charles Alfred Bell, a political officer of the British Raj could be understood as an intermediary, especially in his role in the Simla Agreement of 1913-14, and in the drawing of the McMahon Line between British India and Tibet on the North Eastern frontier of British India where he was chosen to advise the British plenipotentiary on issues pertaining to Tibet. Secondly, this thesis introduces the term “ scholar intermediary” to help define Bell’s role as an intermediary as well as to broaden the definition of the term itself. The thesis argues that Bell wrote several of his scholarly works not only to raise interest in Tibet but also to shape the foreign policy of British Empire in favor of Tibet, by suggesting, for example, what British foreign policy concerning Tibet’s role in the region should look like.

    BULLETIN OF TIBETOLOGY 139 S. MAHINDA THERO: THE SIKKIMESE 1 WHO GAVE LANKANS THEIR FREEDOM SONG PEMA WANGCHUK DORJEE Gangtok Poems penned by S. Mahinda 2 are celebrated to this day as Freedom Songs 3 in the island nation of Sri Lanka. Lankan historians are unanimous in endorsing these verses as having infused the Lankan freedom struggle of the late 1930’s through to the 1940’s, with the courage, strength and impetus required by the movement to inspire nationalism among the people and wrest freedom from British colonial rule. The man himself remains an enigma: a monk who engaged in the Sri Lankan freedom struggle—but not as a politician as is common there—and at a more community and social level which is rare anywhere in the world. He spoke of national pride and responsibility with such conviction and mass appeal that even the increasingly chauvinistic present-day politics of Sri Lanka tend to invoke his poems as political slogans. But S. Mahinda was not a Sri Lankan by birth, he was of Sikkim extract, a young lad who left home in the Himalayas when he was 12 and achieved iconic status in a country beyond India’s southernmost tip. Childhood Recognised in Sri Lanka as ‘Tibet Jathika S. Mahinda Thero,’4 he was born Pempa Thondup (more commonly known Sarki Tshering) in 1901 into the Shalngo family of Sikkim which traces its ancestry back to Khye Bumsa’s grandson Guru Tashi to whom even the royal family of Sikkim traces its lineage. 1 This article would not have been possible without the felicity with which Dr.
