The research described in this chapter is an effort to tackle this question using geographic information systems techniques. The problem has tended to be addressed only in regional aggregate, and though the broad-brush approach has yielded a useful overall impression it has not provided the fine resolution required for a full, detailed picture of relief practices and experiences across the country. This research shows the significance of detailed spatial thinking in examining poor relief. First, it shows that mapping relief expenditure at the local level provides the opportunity for a more nuanced understanding of the welfare landscape; and second, it demonstrates the importance of socio-spatial relationships between poor law unions – the local authorities responsible for administrating relief – and their surrounding economies. George Mackay Brown and the Scottish Catholic Imagination Scottish Religious Cultures Historical Perspectives An innovative study of George Mackay Brown as a Scottish Catholic writer with a truly international reach This lively new study is the very first book to offer an absorbing history of the uncharted territory that is Scottish Catholic fiction. For Scottish Catholic writers of the twentieth century, faith was the key influence on both their artistic process and creative vision. By focusing on one of the best known of Scotland’s literary converts, George Mackay Brown, this book explores both the Scottish Catholic modernist movement of the twentieth century and the particularities of Brown’s writing which have been routinely overlooked by previous studies. The book provides sustained and illuminating close readings of key texts in Brown’s corpus and includes detailed comparisons between Brown’s writing and an established canon of Catholic writers, including Graham Greene, Muriel Spark and Flannery O’Connor. This timely book reveals that Brown’s Catholic imagination extended far beyond the ‘small green world’ of Orkney and ultimately embraced a universal human experience. Linden Bicket is a Teaching Fellow in the School of Divinity in New College, at the University of Edinburgh. She has published widely on George Mackay Brown Linden Bicket and her research focuses on patterns of faith and scepticism in the fictive worlds of story, film and theatre. From Sin to Laziness: Early Modern Views of the Poor and Poor Relief Teresa Cribelar Teresa Cribelar, a history graduate student at Eastern Illinois University, was inducted into Phi Alpha Theta in 2000 and is the current Epsilon Mu Chapter President. This paper was written for Dr. David Smith’s graduate seminar in fall of 2001 and was also the co-recipient of the Lavern Hamand Graduate Writing Award. Views of the poor in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England and France change from that of the poor as sinners to the poor as lazy. Poor relief reflected this change through law and ideology. In the seventeenth-century, the poor were in need of moral reform. They led a life of sin, which caused their state of poverty. Fixing this required charity for all while reforming their morals through spirituality. Once the poor were cleansed of their sins, they could help themselves. The eighteenth century, bringing with it the Enlightenment, changed these beliefs. The crime of the poor became laziness rather than sin. Training and support, it was believed, would make the poor self- supporting. If they could not work and support themselves, then they were lazy and required confinement and forced labor. Charity became reserved for those who could not work. A dramatic shift in the perception of the poor and the function of poor relief occurred during the seventeenth and eighteenth-centuries. This essay presents the thesis of changing poor relief as argued in the historiography of poor relief in France. This thesis of changing poor relief remains, if applied to actual laws and events in England’s history of the same period. -

A brief history of poor relief up until 1845 The first acts of parliament to deal with the relief of the poor were passed in 1424. Most of these and subsequent acts passed in the 15th and 16th centuries. dealt with beggars and little information on individuals survives from this time. After the Reformation, the responsibility for the poor fell to the parish jointly through the heritors, landowners and officials within burghs who were expected to make provision for the poor and were also responsible for the parish school til 1872 and the church and manse til 1925, and the Kirk Sessions (the decision making body of the (or local court) of the parish church, made up of a group of elders, and convened (chaired) by a minister. The heritors often made voluntary contributions to the poor fund in preference of being assessed, and the kirk sessions raised money for the poor from fines, payments for carrying out marriages, baptisms, and funerals, donations, hearse hiring, interest on money lent, rent incomes and church collections. -

Throughout the colonial period and early republic, many Massachusetts towns faced growing numbers of needy men, women and children in need of relief. -

Evangelical Calvinism and the Structures of Baptist Church Life ISTORICAL studies may afford a pleasant escape from the H pressures of a contemporary situation characterised by turbulence and change, or they may offer a measure of illumination and guidance by which the changes may be evaluated and positive resporises made. Into which of these categories this paper will fall I leave to your merciful judgment at its conclusion, though I confess at the outset that my concern is with the relationship of the historical and the contem porary. The contemporary situation is one in which changes are affecting radically the forms of human society as a whole as well as the patterns and structures of thought and life in the Christian church. Baptists live in. this situation. Consequently we have to face the fact that structures of church life, familiar to many of us throughout our lives and to several generations which preceded us, are changing and will continue to change. We ask therefore whether there is any period in Baptist history from which we may derive some guidelines relevant to our situation. Now if any period or person which is the centre of historical study is to be associated in this way with the present situation there must be a living relationship between them. The choice of the historical period must not be haphazard nor must we look for a period possessing striking similarities to the present bringing an inevitable temptation to force or even to falsify the evidence. An authentic relationship is required such as that which exists between the root and the fruits of a tree. -

It is not in any sense an attack upon systems which differ from the Presbyterian, but it is an avowed defense of the latter. In this strenuous age which tolerates only short sermons, necessarily devoted almost exclusively to Evangelism and Mis- sions, there is neither time, patience nor opportunity for instruction in the doctrinal principles, which are the fundamental basis of faith, and which contribute materially to the development of intel- ligent Christian character.
