The accusation of getting bogged down in irrelevancies is not just levelled by people mus-report/rassismus-report-2006.pdf who would be against ZARA anyway. If one is simply attempting to enforce “political correctness”, as some of even our supporters feel is sometimes the case, one can become entangled in irrelevancies and miss the “real racism”. This past year the new ice cream by Unilever called “Mohr im Hemd” [Moor in a Shirt] provoked intense debate, bringing this very question into sharp focus. It seemed that many felt as though some part of tradition would be lost if this pudding were to be called by a less controversial name. But is this really just a side issue? Our clear answer is no. Because even though the term “moor” does not have the same associations as the N-word for many Austrians, it cannot simply be ignored that the term “moor” has its origins in racist colonial times. The origins of such words cannot simply be ignored, even if it simply a dessert, the associations connected with it are perpetuated – and the prejudice is carried forward. But despite all this, an ambivalent feeling remains. How is it that an ice cream of all things can make the eve- ning news while discrimination in the housing market, in people’s everyday lives and the employment market, are never given the same attention? And this, even though those affected suffer much more from the former than from the name of an ice cream. The effects are reduced living standards, stress, less money and fewer chances for fulfilling employment, due to the fact that they are unable to find a position that compensates accordingly with their qualifications. It is a basic question that ZARA is constantly faced with. How can racism in Austria be seen as serious issue when the name of an ice cream generates more concern than the personal experiences and stories that should form the basis of the campaign?

In late November ZARA was informed by 29 a witness that in the night a racist banner saying, “A Mosque Here? No! AR Foreigners Out” had been hung on the external wall of a church in Vienna's 11th district. A few days later it became clear from a report on a neo-Nazi website that “free activists” from a group calling itself “Resistance South” had hung ban- ners on 13 churches that night. ZARA was informed that the ➞ Vienna Regional Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight Against Terrorism has begun investigations; at the time of publishing there were no new developments in the case.

At a local derby match between the two Vi- 30 enna football teams, Rapid and Austria Wien on the 22nd November, Rapid supporters displayed a banner showing Adolf Hitler as a character from the Simpsons TV show. Underneath was the slogan “Death to the FAK (abbreviation for Austria Wien).” ZARA documented the incident as part of irregular media monitoring.

At a championship game between Austria 31 Wien and LASK on 7th March at the Franz- Horr-Stadion, a small but loud group of LASK sup- porters shouted antisemitic and far-right chants such as, “Vienna Jews, Vienna Jews” and “Linz is totally extreme-right“. According to a report on the Austrian Soccer Board fan forum some courageous LASK fans tried to stop the far-right shouting. Due to these, and similar, incidents, the Fair Play initiative is offering in- creased cooperation to prevent racism and far-right activity.
