Their aim was to produce a squad of promising young tennis players, providing them with world class coaching and a fantastic education. The Slater Squad had tremendous success, including a World ATP number 4, Tim Henman, a junior Grand Slam Champion, a junior World number 1 and an Orange Bowl winner - Jamie Delgado who currently coaches Andy Murray. From that concept the Reed’s School Tennis Academy (RSTA) was developed in 2004. Reed’s has a clear and well-defined ethos and aims rooted firmly in the philosophy of Andrew Reed, who founded the School in 1813 as the London Orphan Asylum. The Foundation, which supports over 10 percent of our pupils who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, shapes the ethos of the School. We seek to educate each child within a supportive environment so that our pupils develop into confident, articulate and happy young men and women who go out into the world with a determination to improve it. The programme includes: • One or two coaching sessions per day (one technically based and one match play) • A customised Strength & Conditioning programme • Full medical support including a preventative and rehabilitation programme • Accompanied travel with RSTA coaches and players to TE and ITF events • European training camps at overseas tennis academies including full support of world-class coaches • US placement service for applications to US colleges The programme is led by Head Professional Coach, Ben Haran, who has built up a reputation as one of Britain ’s best coaches of junior players during his time at Reed’s. He is supported by Assistant Head Pro, Nick Greenhouse, and Senior Pro, Tony Lloyd. The atmosphere is tough, but supportive, and all three coaches are experts in understanding the requirements of being a top international player and pushing the players towards their goals.
Strength and Conditioning Programme RSTA has an excellent on-site Strength and Conditioning facility, headed by Ben Haining, who tailors training and testing programmes for the Academy players. He also sets up and monitors recovery after injury programmes – which are key for young growing athletes – backed up by a first class sports science facility.
International Academy Links At RSTA we look to give our players opportunities and different experiences. In 2006 our Head Coach, Ben Haran, formed a link and close working relationship with world- renowned coach Bob Brett at his academy in San Remo, Italy. Applications for the RSTA are usually made for entry at 11+, however, applications can be made for older year groups. Please contact the Admissions Office for further details. Preliminary Assessment Upon initial enquiry candidates will be invited for a Preliminary Assessment consisting of a practice session in the Autumn term prior to the Academic entrance tests. Candidates will then be advised whether to progress with an Academy application.
Academic Entrance tests The Academic entrance tests for Reed’s School for 11+ take place in early January in the year of entry. After passing the academic entry test, candidates then gain access to the Tennis Trial.
Tennis Trial Initial Trial - a full day to assess a candidate’s physical ability (speed, stamina, strength and agility) and their level of tennis ability Further Trial - candidates who are successful at the Initial Trial will be invited for a second full day trial Match Play – during the application process candidates will be viewed by RSTA coaches at tournaments
Acceptance of Place If trials are successful and the candidate is offered a place, parents/guardians will be required to sign the Reed’s School Tennis Academy Policy Document. The player would then be invited to join Reed’s School and the Reed’s School Tennis Academy.
