European Tennis: A Comparative Analysis of Talent Identification and Development (TID) Candidate: Michael Seibold A Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Physical Education, Sport and Leisure Studies School of Education The University of Edinburgh Year of Presentation: 2009 Abstract This thesis critically examines and assesses how Talent Identification and Development (TID) programmes for tennis are organised and implemented in four European countries. The thesis is based upon a multi-disciplinary and comparative research design, using both quantitative and qualitative research strategies, and the research methods of literature surveys, documentary research and semi-structured interviews, supplemented by a self-completion questionnaire. The study directly compares the views of key actors (players, coaches, administrators and parents) involved in TID practice in tennis in two of the countries: the Czech Republic and Germany. Two additional European countries, the United Kingdom (but focussing on England) and France, also form part of the research for comparative purposes. Following an original analysis of published and unpublished national and international literature, websites, documents and data in each of these countries, interviews were conducted in English and German with 39 key informants from the Czech Republic and Germany. The results indicated gaps between the theory and practice of TID and that tennis in the countries examined is likely to remain and become an even more socially exclusive sport within the next few years. Talent Development will be funded either by the public sport system, by private initiative, or both, but talent identification and development in tennis will remain limited to children from families with above average financial backgrounds. i Acknowledgements There are three groups of people I want to pay acknowledgement to here that have guided and assisted me during the production of this thesis.     GAME, SET, WATCHED: GOVERNANCE, SOCIAL CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE IN PROFESSIONAL TENNIS By Marie-Pier Guay A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November, 2013 Copyright © Marie-Pier Guay, 2013 Abstract Contrary to many major sporting leagues such as the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB, or the Olympic Games as a whole, the professional tennis industry has not been individually scrutinized in terms of governance, social control, and surveillance practices. This thesis presents an in-depth account of the major governing bodies of the professional tennis circuit with the aim of examining how they govern, control, constrain, and practice surveillance on tennis athletes and their bodies. Foucault’s major theoretical concepts of disciplinary power, governmentality, and bio-power are found relevant today and can be enhanced by Rose’s ethico-politics model and Haggerty and Ericson’s surveillant assemblage. However, it is also shown how Foucault, Rose, and Haggerty and Ericson’s different accounts of “modes of governing” perpetuate sociological predicaments of professional tennis players within late capitalism. These modes of surveillance are founded on a meritocracy based on the ATP and WTA rankings systems. A player’s ranking affects how he or she is governed, surveilled, controlled, and even punished. Despite ostensibly promoting tennis athletes’ health protection and wellbeing, the systems of surveillance, governance, and control rely on a biased and capitalistically-driven meritocracy that actually jeopardizes athletes’ health and contributes to social class divisions, socio- economic inequalities, gender discrimination, and media pressure.

The best-of-five match series will take place on an indoor hard court at Chizhovka Arena in Minsk, November 11-12. Captain Kathy Rinaldi named 2017 US Open and Australian Open semifinalist and world No. 10 CoCo Vandeweghe, 2017 US Open Champion and world No. 13 Sloane Stephens , No. 59 Shelby Rogers and No. 70 Alison Riske to the U.S. team . Vandeweghe, Rogers, and Riske were all part of the Fed Cup team that swept Germany, 4-0, earlier this year in the first round in Maui. Vandeweghe and Rogers both competed in the semifinal against the Czech Republic in Tampa Bay, Fla. In that tie, Vandeweghe won both of her singles matches, as well as the decisive doubles match, to become the first U.S. Fed Cup player since 1996 to win three live matches in one tie. Vandeweghe has played in six Fed Cup ties for the U.S., holding a 4-0 record in doubles and a 5-3 record in singles.
