  • Ornithological Records from Ha Giang Province, North-East Vietnam, During March–June 2000
FORKTAIL 19 (2003): 21-30 Ornithological records from Ha Giang province, north-east Vietnam, during March–June 2000 C. J. VOGEL, P. R. SWEET, LE MANH HUNG and M. M. HURLEY Ornithological field surveys were undertaken at three montane forest sites in Ha Giang province, north-east Vietnam, between March and June 2000. A total of 146 bird species were recorded, including Beautiful Nuthatch Sitta formosa (Vulnerable), Short-tailed Scimitar Babbler Jabouillea danjoui (Near Threatened), the first record for Vietnam of Yellow-vented Warbler Phylloscopus cantator, and 16 additional species previously unrecorded in East Tonkin. The results indicate that the montane regions of northern Vietnam east of the Red River remain under-surveyed. INTRODUCTION richness and levels of human disturbance in montane areas of Ha Giang province (Hurley 2002, Lunde et al. This paper presents bird records based on sight submitted, Bain and Nguyen Quang Truong in prep.). observations and specimens collected during field The mountains of Ha Giang include the highest peak surveys at three montane localities in Ha Giang province, in Vietnam east of the Red River: Mount Tay Con Linh north-east Vietnam during March–June 2000. This (2,616 m). Although a number of bird collections have survey was part of a multi-taxa inventory conducted been made in Tonkin (e.g. Kuroda 1917, Delacour 1928, jointly by the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation 1930, Kinnear 1929, Bangs and Van Tyne 1931, at the American Museum of Natural History, New York Dickinson 1970, Eames and Ericson 1996), the (CBC-AMNH) and the Institute for Ecology and mountains along East Tonkin’s border with China have Biological Resources, Hanoi (IEBR) to ascertain species been relatively neglected compared with those to the Figure 1.

The magnificent Reeves's Pheasant was one of the many specialties seen on this tour (Brendan Ryan). EASTERN CHINA 3 – 27 MAY 2017 LEADER: HANNU JÄNNES Birdquest’s Eastern China tour, an epic 25 day journey across much of eastern China, focusses on an array of rare Chinese endemics and migrants, and this year’s tour once again proved a great success. The focus of the first part of the tour is to achieve good views of rarities like Spoon-billed Sandpiper, the critically endangered Blue-crowned (Courtois’s) Laughingthrush, the superb Cabot’s Tragopan and Elliot’s Pheasant and the ultra-rare Chinese Crested Tern. This was successfully achieved alongside a plethora of other much sought after species including White-faced Plover, Great Knot, stunning Saunders’s Gulls, Reed Parrotbill, eastern migrants, including Pechora Pipit, Japanese Robin, Japanese Paradise, Yellow-rumped, Narcissus and Mugimaki Flycatchers, and forest species like Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher, White-necklaced Partridge, Silver Pheasant, Buffy and Moustached Laughingthrushes, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Fork-tailed Sunbird and the delightful Pied Falconet. Quite a haul! 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Eastern China 2017 www.birdquest-tours.com Crested Ibis at Dongzhai Nature Reserve (Brendan Ryan). The second part of the tour, the ‘Northeast Extension’, visited a series of sites for various other Chinese specialities. Beginning in Wuhan, we bagged the amazing Reeves’s Pheasant and Crested Ibis, as well as stunners that included Fairy Pitta and Chestnut-winged Cuckoo. We then moved on to Jiaocheng for the fabulous Brown Eared Pheasants before flying on to Beijing, where the mountains of the nearby Hebei province yielded the endemic Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch, Chinese Nuthatch, Green-backed and Zappey’s Flycatchers and the rare Grey-sided Thrush.

  • Vietnam 2017
Field Guides Tour Report VIETNAM 2017 Nov 3, 2017 to Nov 23, 2017 Dave Stejskal For our tour description, itinerary, past triplists, dates, fees, and more, please VISIT OUR TOUR PAGE. One of the pair of Black-crowned Barwings that we saw on our way to Mang Den. These near-endemics were just one highlight of our trip. Photo by participant Greg Griffith. We added this 2017 Vietnam tour at the last minute to substitute for the cancelled Yunnan tour, and I sure am glad we were able to make this one a 'go'! We switched the itinerary around a bit from our usual offering, dropping the now challenging Tam Dao NP north of Hanoi and substituting the productive and very interesting highlands of Central Annam in Kontum Province. Our first run of this itinerary, after Doug Gochfeld and I scouted this new area after last year's Vietnam tour was a big success, as I'm sure you will all agree! Weather, as usual, played a role in our tour, but it wasn't as rainy this year as it was in 2016. We did have some rain, as expected, but I don't think it adversely affected our experience for the most part. Logistically, this trip ran very smoothly, thanks in large part to our local co-leader Nhan and our expert drivers. Vietnam boasts more endemics (and near-endemics) than any other mainland s.e. Asian country, and they really showed well for us on this tour. Our first big prize, and arguably the star among many highlights, was that wonderful pair of Black-crowned Barwings en route to Mang Den.

This was our adventure… After our pre-tour extension of remote eastern Cambodia, where we enjoyed sightings of such mega-ticks as Cambodian Tailorbird, Mekong Wagtail, Pied Harrier, Great Hornbill, Milky Stork and Irrawaddy Dolphin, we began our main 2 ½ week tour of these two neighbouring countries. The trip focused on the best birding localities and targeted the endemics, near- endemics and other sought-after species on offer in each country.
