  • Gender and Islam in Indonesian Cinema
GENDER AND ISLAM IN INDONESIAN CINEMA ALICIA IZHARUDDIN Gender, Sexualities and Culture in Asia Editor-in-chiefs Stevi Jackson Department of Sociology University of York York, United Kingdom Olivia Khoo Monash University Clayton, Australia The Gender, Sexualities and Culture in Asia book series provides a welcome new forum for monographs and anthologies focussing on the intersections between gender, sexuality and culture across Asia. Titles in the series include multi- and interdisciplinary research by scholars within Asia as well as in North American, European and Australian academic contexts. The series provides a distinctive space for the exploration of topics of growing academic concern, from non-normative cultures of sexuality in Asia, to studies of gendered identities cross the region. The series will expand the field of Asian genders and sexualities by applying a cultural lens to current debates, including rural lives, migration patterns, religion, transgender identities, sex industry and family. Why explore gender/sex/culture through an area/Asia frame? What real-world or scholarly debates does this combination address? And, which Asia? At this stage, we intend to cast the net widely in terms of topics, and to consider Asia not through a narrow geographic lens but as part of a shifting terrain that will include diasporic Asia and West Asia. Research on gender and sexuality in Asia is growing precisely because it addresses real world questions about changing patterns of migration, changing meanings of ‘family’ in Asia. Chen Kuan Hsing’s Asia as Method (Duke University Press, 2010) highlights the theoretical debate in understanding decoloni- zation and deimperialization through globalization, hence highlighting inter-Asian debateson regional integration in the cold war era.

  • The Doxa and Legitimation of Literacy: Case of Yogyakarta Literature Arena
Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research, volume 280 International Seminar On Recent Language, Literature, And Local Culture Studies (BASA 2018) The Doxa and Legitimation of Literacy: Case of Yogyakarta Literature Arena Aprinus Salam Faculty of Cultural Sciences Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract - The literary arena is a battle site for litterateurs to gain recognition or legitimacy. The success of the litterateur is determined by litterateur’s strategy to manage his capitals, both in literature technically and in taking action to position themselves in the local and national literature arena. In addition to managing capitals, litterateurs are also in their respective doxas. Doxa is a cultural element so that the arena and literary production become geo-cultural. This paper concerns about the legitimacy of literacy in Yogyakarta based on Bourdieu’s scheme which divides the hierarchy of legitimacy into three levels, namely specific, bourgeois, and popular. The material object of this study is the arena and litterateurs in Yogyakarta. This study assumes that the hierarchical layers of the Yogyakarta literary society provide a more diverse complexity due to the primordial doxas. The results of the study show that the legitimacy of literature in Yogyakarta is called the main literary writer (tenanan), special literary writers, in-between writers (nanggung), popular writers, and cheap writers (ecek-ecek). Keywords: legitimacy; literature arena; Doxa I. INTRODUCTION In Yogyakarta, there are differences in the recognition regarding when an individual is called a writer with their various legitimate titles. The notion of litterateur is that someone who writes novels, poems, short stories, and drama scripts.

Apakah karya sastra

Maiyahan as a Model of Cak Nun’s Transformative Islamic Education Ma’arif Jamuin and Yulia Eka Saputri Department of Islamic Religious Education, Faculty of Islamic Studies Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta e-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract-Emha Ainun Najib, best known as Cak Nun, is a prominent writer, humanist, “dai” or “ulama”, and a preacher. Despite his profound concerns on social, political, cultural and religious issues, he expresses them in simple language and accordingly, is explicable to the lower-class society. He named it “Maiyah”, or “Maiyahan” as a forum to articulate and convey his views. It is a medium to critically discuss various social, cultural, political, or religious issues. As a medium of da’wah (tabligh), it can be classified as non-formal education based on educational perspective. Supported by his populist style, and exceptional literary and rhetorical ability, he evokes the critical reason of his congregation and promotes a sociable and understandable tabligh. In contrast to the design of formal education, non-formal education has no time-constraint and the materials are miscellaneous. Unlike general tabligh, which is commonly a one-way communication and normative, Maiyah discusses actual issues in dialogic forum. It is closer to critical education model which aims to construct participants’ critical awareness towards a transformation of social structure. Keywords: Transformative Education Model, Cak Nun, and Maiyah.

Shadow Boxing: Indonesian W riters and the Ramayana in the New Order' Marshall Clark Introduction This article is a study of the ideas, visions, and styles of a number of Indonesia's writers in the New Order—in particular, the final years of the New Order—who chose to rework and reinterpret the Ramayana epic of the Javanese wayang kulit shadow puppet theatre. The deliberate choice by these writers to use Indonesian as their medium of linguistic communication has proven to be a decision in favor of distancing themselves from their mother-tongue, Javanese, and of targeting a larger "national" audience, thus signaling their concern for non-Javanese Indonesians. By the same token, the Indonesian language of wayang literary representations was often heavily Javanese in its flavor and style, and the indigenized wayang characters and plots appropriated were also, naturally, very much regional in origin. Belonging to Indonesia's small yet influential political class, the target of these writers was, generally, middle-class public opinion, which they attempted to both reflect and shape. However, although the target of these writers was the Indonesian middle class, their allegiance was overwhelmingly with the non-elite and subordinate groups in Indonesian society. Yet, how can an appropriation of the wayang's feudal world of kings, queens, princes, princesses, demons, and servants possibly express an allegiance with Indonesia's "non-elite"? The answer to this question lies in the feudal kawula-gusti (servant-lord/master) ethos, one of the most basic assumptions of 1 1 1 would like to thank Virginia Hooker, Keith Foulcher, Barbara Hatley, and Benedict Anderson, in particular, for reading earlier versions of this article, which has been significantly improved as a result of their detailed comments.

  • SEJARAH SASTRA ADALAH SEJARAH SEBUAH BANGSA: Ketika Yogyakarta Menjadi Indonesia *)
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Universitas Ahmad Dahlan Repository s SEJARAH SASTRA ADALAH SEJARAH SEBUAH BANGSA: Ketika Yogyakarta Menjadi Indonesia *) Oleh: Jabrohim Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, Yogyakarta [email protected] Sastra yang Mendahului Bangsa Sejarah sastra Indonesia memiliki keunikan.

  • The New Tradition of Putu Wijaya 105
The N ew Tradition of Putu W ijaya Ellen Rafferty Introduction Putu Wijaya is one of Indonesia's most prominent and prolific authors, contributing numerous novels, short stories, dramas, and film scripts to Indonesian literature.1 He is Balinese by birth and Jakartan by choice having spent the past twenty years there. The marriage of Balinese and Jakartan cultures is reflected in his literary style which is char acterized by a departure from the conventions of realism, an eagerness to borrow from traditional and folk genres,2 * and a black and biting humor. This style draws on elements commonly found in regional genres, such as wayang, arja, ludruk, ketoprak, lenong, and Srimulat * creating artistic forms that are reminiscent of Javanese and Balinese cultures, while remaining rooted in contemporary Jakarta. His language is colloquial, peppered with Jakartanese and Javanese expressions; his syntax is bare, direct, even shockingly abrupt. His themes, often arising out of urban settings, include feelings of alienation, 2Putu Wijaya was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison during the 1985-1986 aca demic year. I am grateful to him and to two anonymous readers for their comments on this essay. 2By "traditional genres" I mean the contemporary cultural expressions of ethnic groups such as Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, etc., not the performance traditions of past eras. Since performance traditions may be learned and performed by anyone of a particular region, the Indonesian term kesenian daerah or "regional arts" is a more appropriate term because it avoids the distinction between ethnic affiliation and regional group identity. The term "folk" characteristically is used to identify cultural performances associated with the lower class.
