For almost three decades, the stars of the golf scene have assembled in Germany for a showdown at the BMW International Open. This tradition is set to continue at the 27th staging of the prestigious tournament (23rd to 28th June 2015, Golfclub München Eichenried). Fans can already look forward to an attractive field. Martin Kaymer remains the only German to have won the BMW International Open. That victory came back in 2008, at the 20th anniversary of the tournament at Golfclub München Eichenried. Since then, Kaymer has established himself as one of the very best in the world, successfully overcoming a bit of a slump in the process. The former world number one impressed the golfing world last season with his second major victory after the 2010 US PGA Championship. The man from Düsseldorf won the U.S. Open with a sensational score of nine under par and an eight-shot lead over the opposition. In Autumn, Kaymer celebrated his third Ryder Cup triumph with the European team. His many fans in Germany can look forward to another appearance at the BMW International Open from the top German golfer at this time. Kaymer finished tied in fourth place on his last outing in Munich in 2013 – just four shots off what would have been a second German victory. Henrik Stenson is currently ranked number three in the world and the Swede, who enjoys a huge fan base all over the world, will be out to put on a good show for his many fans in Germany.

  • Are the Official World Golf Rankings Biased?
Are the Official World Golf Rankings Biased?∗ Mark Broadie Richard J. Rendleman, Jr. Graduate School of Business Tuck School of Business Columbia University Dartmouth College email: [email protected] Kenan-Flagler Business School UNC Chapel Hill email: richard [email protected] This version: February 26, 2013 First version: April 18, 2012 Abstract Golf is a global sport with professional golfers playing on many organized tours throughout the world. The largest and most important tours for male professionals include the PGA Tour, European Tour, Japanese Tour and Asian Tour. The Official World Golf Ranking, or OWGR, is a system for ranking male professional golfers on a single scale. We say a ranking system is unbiased if otherwise identical golfers who happen to play on different tours have the same (or very similar) ranks. In this paper, we investigate whether the OWGR system is biased for or against any of the tours, and if so, by how much. To investigate any potential bias, we compare the OWGR system with two unbiased methods for estimating golfer skill and performance. The first is a score-based skill estimation (SBSE) method, which uses scoring data to estimate golfer skill, taking into account the relative difficulty of the course in each tournament round. The second is the Sagarin method, which uses win-lose-tie and scoring differential results for golfers playing in the same tournaments, to rank golfers. Neither the score-based skill method nor the Sagarin method use tour information in calculating player ranks, and therefore neither method is biased for or against any tour.
