DID YOU KNOW?

Where does the word “fore” come from?

You may sometimes hear "fore" when you’re on the course. This word means "watch out ahead!" Any golfer, who hits an errant shot that could pose a risk to other golfers in front of the them, should yell out "fore" as a warning. According to historians at the British Golf Museum, fore evolved from “forecaddie”. A forecaddie is a person who goes ahead to watch where shots land. If a member of a group hit a wayward shot then they would alert the forecaddie by yelling this word, which was later shortened to simply "fore". However, the term also has a military origin, meaning "beware before” and used for alerting nearby infantrymen to get down to avoid the shells flying overhead. 1

Why does golf have 18 holes?

The earliest golf courses had different numbers of holes, anything from 12, to 19, or 23, or any other number. They were also not always played in a defined order. Then, around 1764, Royal and Ancient St. Andrews, which had 12 holes at the time, decided to reduce the number to 10 and began playing eight of those holes twice. In 1857, the course started to be played as a full 18 holes. Eighteen holes did not become the standard right away, but gradually more courses copied the St. Andrews model. Then, in 1858, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews issued new rules: Rule 1 stated, “One round of the or 18 holes is reckoned a match unless otherwise stipulated.”

How did the rules come about?

The were originally drawn up for the world's first Open golf competition at Leith by the Gentlemen Golfers of Edinburgh in 1744. Back 3 then, there were just 13 rules. Ten years later, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews then adopted these rules for their own competition. In 1897 the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. 1 the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews Andrews formed a Rules Committee to apply the 2 Rules of Golf rules.
