Dr. Bharat Ram Dr Bharat Ram along with Mr Dharam Vira and Mr Vishnu Sahay were the founder members of the Delhi Golf Club. They saved the Club from closing in 1950. It was on his initiative was started in 1964. Apart from mobilising funds and event management team, he invited Peter Thomson and other top golfers to participate in the Indian Open. In the absence of star (***) rated hotels, he played host to some pros in his house. His company had sponsored DCM . In 1974-75 Dr Bharat Ram was the captain of the Delhi Golf Course. He specially invited his friend Peter Thomson, three time Indian Open Winner, to re-do the layout. Of course, the course has undergone changes there after also.

He was passionate about golf and wanted ladies to be part of the gold fraternity. While on a trip to Mumbai in the 50s he brought back a ladies golf set and presented to the Ladies Section of the Club.

Dr Bharat Ram was fond of cards. Once he played cards whole night. In the morning he changed into golf kit in the car and teed off early. No wonder he brought a card of 69, a record that stood for quite some time. He said later, “I can only attribute this to the fact that I simply could not lift my head”. He passed away in Jul 2007 at the age of 93. Randhawa’s…. A family of Golfers It all started with Lt Col Kaka (HS) Randhawa of the Indian Army (JAT Regt) He was a very knowledgeable golfer and instilled love of golf in his two sons,Bamby and Bunty. Bamby was sent to France on golf scholarship. He returned from there after polishing his game to become leading golfer on the Indian pro circuit. Both brothers turned professional in late 70s. Bamby remained a sober golfer while Bunty turned out to be a killer golfer. They were among top professionals in the 80s.

Jyoti Randhawa is a nephew of Col Randhawa. His father BrigDhirusssssssss Randhawa was in the army. He picked up his golf from his illustrious brothers. Bunty used to caddy for him in some tournaments. Jyoti has won India Open thrice apart from other laurels. One word suffices….a complete gentleman golfer. Another product of Randhawa family is Raj Randhawa, son of Inderpal Randhawa and nephew of Jyoti. He had turned professional in 2007. Four professionals in a family! Biggest Chokers on the Pro-Circuit Two highly ranked and talented golfers, Greg Norman and Sergio Gracia are known to be the great ’chokers’on the pro circuit, especially as the 72nd hole approaches. After 136 British Open defeat on the play off, Sergio Gracia commented, “I should write a bookon how not tomiss a shot in a play off and shoot one over”

Hitting it Long Every budding golfer dreams of hitting three hundred yarder. As propagated by golf pundits, it is the timing at the time of contact that gives you the distance, other ingredients of good golfers are ingrained in the ‘Timing’’. One’s height, weight and reach are not the dominating factors. Club Head Speed up to 135-140miles per hour is achieved by the super long hitters. World record is in the name of Jason Zuback of 412 yards as measured by Long Drivers Association .Zuback is only 5 ft 9 in tall but he achieves a club head speed of 147 miles per hour. Amongst the ladies Jo D, a 6ft 2in tall achieved a distance of 296 yards. Friends concentrate on ‘club head speed’…..also GOLF RULES QUIZ ANSWER “YES” OR “NO” TO THE QUIZ
