ABSTRACT As part of an assessment of the vascular plant families endemic to Madagascar and the Comoro Islands, a synoptic revision is presented of three genera of Sarcolaenaceae: Eremolaena Baill. (2 spp.), Pentachlaena H. Perrier (3 spp.), and Perrierodendron Cavaco (5 spp.). Molecular sequence data place Sarcolaenaceae as the sister group of Dipterocarpaceae within an expanded Malvales. The three genera studied appear to be closely related and probably form a monophyletic assemblage, sharing several diagnostic features (e.g., free stipules and inflorescence bracts, an involucre reduced at anthesis but expand- ing somewhat in fruit in certain species, and seeds with little or no endosperm KEY WORDS Sarcolaenaceae, and a smooth integument); features separating the genera include sepal size, Eremolaena, the number of carpels, and fruit dehiscence.

The systematic position of Sareolaenaeeae is not entirely clear. When he described the family, • In Petit Thouars (180f>) claimed the group was allied to Malvaceae or Tiliaceae. This view has been accepted by subsequent French authors. Gerard (1919) em phasizes malvalean relationship for the family, although be suggests many simi larities with Theaceae as well. Cavaco (1952b) believes that Sareolaenaeeae are polyphyletie. derived from origins near Theaceae and Tiliaceae, respectively. Cavaco does not outline, however, which portions of Sareolaenaeeae might be re lated to Theaceae and which might have affinities to Tiliaceae. Dehay's (1957) petiolar Studies emphasize a relationship to Malvales in general and Tiliaceae in particular. Hutchinson (1959) places Sareolaenaeeae in Ochnales, along with Ochnaceae. Scytopetalaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Ancistrocladaeeae, and a family based on the Madagascar endemic Rhopatocarpugf Sphaerosepalaceae. These views i'ii relationship seem quite various. There may be. however, some degree of affinity, or at least many common features among the putatively-related families mentioned above. Erdtman (1952. 1954) notes similarity between pollen of Sareolaenaeeae and such varied groups as Ericaceae, Caryocaraceae, KidiHn/cra, and Leeythidaceae-Planchonioideae, however. Pollen tetrads of Sareolaenaeeae are of interest not only for the information they may give regarding the relationships of the family, but also as an example iif pollen evolution. These tetrads, in fact, offer examples of some of the most intricate pollen construction to be found in angiosperms.

Endemic families of Madagascar. XIV. A new restricted range species of Pentachlaena H. Perrier (Sarcolaenaceae) from central Madagascar Tefy H. Andriamihajarivo, Porter P. Lowry II & George E. Schatz Abstract ANDRIAMIHAJARIVO, T.H., P.P. LOWRY II & G.E. SCHATZ (2016). Endemic families of Madagascar. XIV. A new restricted range species of Pentachlaena H. Perrier (Sarcolaenaceae) from central Madagascar. Candollea 71 : 167-172. In English, English and French abstracts. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.15553/c2016v712a1 Pentachlaena vestita Andriam., Lowry & G.E. Schatz (Sarcolaenaceae) is described as a new species from open, frequently burned vegetation on quartzite substrate on Mt. Ambatolahinanahary in central Madagascar. It can be distinguished from Pentachlaena latifolia H. Perrier, which it most closely resembles, by several foliar characters including leaf size and venation, and especially by the presence of a dense stellate-strigose indument on the inflorescences, flowers, and fruits, and which almost totally obscures the abaxial leaf surface. A description of the new species is accompanied by a line drawing and photos taken in the field, along with a preliminary assessment of its risk of extinction following the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, which indicates a status of “Endangered”.
