They will:  Replace the nudity prohibited signs (stolen several months ago),  Engage in an educational period through the summer (i.e. warnings will be issued to nude beachgoers.),  Not enforce the anti-nudity regulation until after the summer season. “Essentially, their plan for this summer is the same as for last summer before the lawsuit was filed.

Adding to this ambiance was Rolf, working his DJ station for hours on end, playing requests and other favorites.

Thursday - Sunday August 20-23 THE NATURIST SOCIETY’S ANNUAL WESTERN GATHERING Lupin Lodge, Los Gatos These four days are full of interesting workshops being sponsored by individual clubs and naturist leaders from all over the Western United States. Anyone who has gone to a Gathering before knows it is a great time to see old friends from other nudist groups (and to make new friends!) and to share experiences and advice all can use to make their clubs better. The Lupin Lodge itself is just great with over 100 acres of land with plenty of trails, courts, volleyball, two pools, two Jacuzzis, a computer recreation hall, an magnificent restaurant! The number of available "yurt" overnight rooms is just about sold out, but there is plenty of RV hookups and camping spots available. Call them at (408) 353-9200 to reserve your overnight accommodations. There are also several outside the resort within just a few miles. We encourage you to reserve this as a " week" in your work schedule right away. We hope some of you who will be attending can open your cars and SUVs to car-pooling (if just to split the gas money!) Because this event is always a sellout, we recommend you call Olive Dell directly NOW to reserve overnight accommodations. (909-825-6619.) There are also a couple of motels a few miles away.) SCNANewsletterforJuly2009 Page6of12 NUDE SAILING– JULY & AUGUST SCHEDULE One of our members has a 41-ft sailboat and he is offering to take us on a series of harbor and near-ocean trips this summer. Each trip has a limit on the number of participants, so RSVP early at (818) 225-2273 to reserve your place on deck for these trips. Sunday, July 12: Day Sail to Anacapa Island This trip is almost full, call soon! Friday, Saturday & Sunday July 24-25-26: 3-day Sail to Santa Cruz Island Santa Cruz Island, the largest of the Channel Islands, offers numerous anchorages and endless exploring opportunities. At 20 miles off the California coast, Santa Cruz is within the Channel Islands National Park and makes a perfect destination if you have at least 2 days. The anchorages range from mile wide expanses to just large enough for one boat, some with sandy beaches, others with sheer cliffs all around. Santa Cruz is uninhabited except for the occasional (friendly) park ranger. We leave promptly at 8:00 am from the marina and traverse the channel to Santa Cruz in about 5 hours where we search out a small hopefully private anchorage. The following morning each person is free to do as little or as much as he/she desires, for the very adventurous we can get out the knee board, best done in the morning before the wave chop comes up, a total blast! For those that want to explore inland, I know of a hike to a small waterfall and ferns. Go for a nude kayak ride, explore the beach, take a refreshing swim, or just relax on deck, the rest of the day we are on “Island time”. By evening it gets a little cool, so it’s time for a hot dinner and drinks. There is a stove/oven in the galley and a BBQ on deck. Sunday morning we set sail for the return trip to Channel Islands Harbor. This trip is limited to 5 participants (2 spaces left.) Thursday to Sunday Aug 6-9 Sail to Santa Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands Santa Catalina Island, described as a magical destination in Pop Song legend, is really a very busy place during the summer. There is no place to safely be nude there anymore as sailboats, motor boats, cruise ships, and tourists of every kind swarm its coves and harbors. Still, people enjoy visiting Two Harbors and Avalon, and we will also - just come prepared to be dressed appropriately. Santa Barbara Island is the smallest of all the Channel Islands. Because it is located about 50 miles off the southern California coast visitors there are very rare, so nude hikes to the interior are possible but not guaranteed. It is also home to a large sea lion rookery and several seabird nesting colonies. This trip is limited to 5 participants (one space available). Sunday August 16 Day Sail to Anacapa Island Laying just 11 miles of our coast, Anacapa is the closest of the Channel Islands. For those wanting more than a harbor cruise this trip offers a taste of open water. We leave promptly at 8:30AM from the marina and traverse the channel in about 3 hours. With the anchor set by lunch time it is time for sunbathing on deck, hopefully with good weather and some privacy, au-natural. There is very little anchorage on this island, but there are some spectacular natural vistas. This is a nice, one-day for those who want to experience nude sailing but do not want to spend overnight on the boat. We will return to the marina by 5 PM. This trip is limited to 5 participants (all seats are available). Sunday August 30 Day Sail to Anacapa Island A repeat of the Anacapa day sail described above. Limit per trip: 5 (2 seats available).

SCNANewsletterforJuly2009 Page8of12 The 25-minute presentation reviewed the history of the beach, the bad criminal element there now since the nudists were chased away, and our proposal to help and attract tourist dollars to the cash-strapped region. I should say it was planned for 25 minutes, but with the constant questions from the Supervisor’s staffers, it stretched to an hour. Both of them interrupted us throughout with questions – especially about us bringing in tourist money - that showed they were really into the discussion and not being hostile at all, a very good sign. They also appreciated we weren’t asking for the county’s nudity law to be overturned, but instead that the enforcement of the nudity law should be reprioritized and focus only on lewd and criminal behavior at that beach. SCNA agreed to do our part, educating the beachgoers about proper behavior with our Beach Ambassador program. They also agreed that proper signage was a logical requirement. At the end of the hour they freely gave us advice about (l-r): Walt Stephens, Sonya Robinson, Gary Mussell what to do next and who to speak to (the county sheriff, the BATES BEACHH UPDATE public defender’s office, city officials in Carpinteria, and also to get some local business people on the record as A POSITIVE MEETING WITH favoring the beach). LAGUNA NIGUEL PREPARES FOR ANNUAL AMTRAK CROWDS ON JULY 11 The Mooning of the Amtrak takes place each year on the Second Saturday of July. The 30th Annual Amtrak Mooning is scheduled for all day Saturday, July 11, 2009. This is not an SCNA event but feel free to join in the fun. The event drew a crowd of 10,000 people last year in 2008. Exact location, directions, and frequently asked questions can be found on the Internet at: We strongly recommend you avoid coming by motor vehicle as there are only a few small vehicle parking lots. Vehicle parking is backed-up to one mile to the South along the shoulder of this narrow two lane road. Vehicles parked in business's parking lots run the high risk of being towed away. Instead, come by Metrolink train! Law Enforcement Warning: In past years, the area was patrolled by the Orange County Sheriff for the City of Laguna Niguel. They are looking for "controlled substances," carrying an alcoholic beverage outdoors, and/or genital exposure. The deputies have been considerate and liberal in the past, but if you break one of these 3 rules, they will cite or arrest you. Last year the crowd got a little rowdy. In anticipation of this year’s event, the Laguna Niguel City Council approved two new ordinances that will make it unlawful to consume alcoholic beverages in public and urinate in public. According to Laguna Niguel Mayor Robert Ming, “Thousands of rowdy partiers from out of town have forced us to take this action. This event happened for many years without problems, but it has now gotten out of control. We cannot allow a situation where public safety and our local businesses are threatened.” If you don’t go, you can follow the fun on Twitter at: www.Twitter.com/LagunaNiguelCA
